Torre book on Yankee years.

Bernie was DONE. He's a legend, but by that logic you can never cut a player like that, a class guy who was a great contributor but no longer can field a position or hit much. If this was Torre's grat insight into personnel, good thing he wasn't part of the decision-making process.

According to the book, Torre wanted to bring back Bernie in 07 to be a bench player. Cashman fought him on this and insisted that a combo of Doug Mientkiewicz and Josh Phelps would do better as bench players than Bernie.

That year Mientkiewicz broke his wrist and played in 72 games. Phelps was waived in June. The two combined to bat .200 off the bench. There is no way to know this for sure, but I think that Bernie would have done a better job at that.
