Jetlag
I'm working on getting into the actuarial field and I graduate in May. I started talking to a job placement company and the lady told me I could make myself a more attractive candidate if I learned these database programming languages. I don't have too much programming experience but I dabbled with it at one point so I'm not completely ignorant. My question is, how long did it take to learn and how much time did you put into it? Since I work mornings and go to school until 8pm M-TH time is a rare commodity to me. Do you have any suggestions or know of any good sites/books to use? I found one site for SQL this morning and it didn't look hard at all, but that was only the basic stuff.

The only experience I have with SQL is OSCommerce which is an online shopping database... check them out its a pretty cool open source thing you can play around with... I did not like it one bit... (the SQL)... lol
Maxman
I never thought about it much but I didn't realize there was a connection between the two fields. Do they want you to know the basics or become a full DBA? If you want some hands on experience building online databases I can give you a few projects to do. Well I'm not sure but I'm assuming the more I know the better. I'll be more than happy to assist. Bring on the work, that would be awesome! CTM
like most tech's is pretty easy to learn enough to sql to be dangerous. to really learn what your doing takes some time though, and I would suggest you invest it. Not really understanding what you are doing when writing SQL, like for instance how indexes work and how to write queries to take advantage of them bring down systems all the time. I've looked and I can't find really anything helpful on it. From what I have gathered it looks pretty close to SQL.
