SouthernJet
Mother hits coach at basketball game By Leah Friedman - Staff Writer Published: Wed, Feb. 04, 2009 03:40PM A woman was charged with assault on a government employee after she whacked her son's basketball coach at a game Monday night. According to school officials, the mother, Nicole Denise Shields, was attending her son's basketball game -- East Millbrook Middle School vs. East Wake Middle School -- at East Wake. At some point her son was taken out of the game, said Wake schools spokesman Greg Thomas. Shields came down from the stands and yelled at East Millbrook coach Chris Kwolek, Thomas said. Then she hit him on the back of the head. Thomas did not know if her hand was open or closed. The incident was witnessed by an assistant principal and an off duty Wake County Deputy Sheriff, Thomas said. The deputy pursued charges against Shields, Thomas said. Shields turned herself in to authorities on Tuesday, according to a Wake County Sheriff spokeswoman. She paid her $1,500 bond and was ordered not to have contact with the victim, the spokeswoman said. 32green
LONG ISLAND SOCK-ER MOM BUSTED By SELIM ALGAR October 24, 2007 -- They volunteer for this? A Long Island soccer mom allegedly bashed her daughter's elderly youth coach in the face with a cloth folding chair Sunday because the man - who offers his time for free - failed to e-mail her proper directions to a game. The attack marks the second instance of parent-on-coach violence in Nassau County in less than a week. Cops said Alicia Vigil, 33, confronted the 68-year- old coach after her daughter's game at Sewanhaka HS in Elmont because she wasn't provided directions to the youth-club game via e-mail and had to get them from other parents. Vigil's daughter is a member of the Lynbrook/East Rockaway Soccer Club, a youth program that fields both boys and girls squads from ages 4 through 19, according to a team official. Police said Vigil and the coach were engaged in a heated verbal altercation when the man turned and began to walk away. Enraged, Vigil allegedly took a folding chair and hit him square in the face as shocked onlookers - including the young members of both teams - watched in horror. The coach, who refused medical attention, suffered a busted lip and a cut cheek, according to police. Cops said that as a parting shot, Vigil scratched a van she believed belonged to the coach. Vigil was arrested without incident at her home in East Rockaway Sunday night after police were alerted to the incident. She was charged with reckless endangerment and released on an appearance ticket. Vigil denied hitting the coach or vandalizing his car. Volunteer coaches of other teams in the soccer club were stunned to hear of the assault yesterday and described the victim as a selfless man who had no prior disagreements with Vigil or any other parents. "He was just another volunteer out there giving his time to these kids," said Peter Bussa, a Lynbrook/East Rockaway coach. "From my dealings with him he's been nothing but a gentleman." Bussa said he was concerned about parent-on-coach violence in the realm of youth sports, but he has regrettably come to expect it. "You get one of these parents on every team," he said. "She sounds like she went a little crazy." Playing time, not directions, sparked another attack on a coach last week in Bellmore when a father and his brother pummeled a Little League coach after he benched their relative.
