I always suggest canon over nikon when going with a dslr. Picking the right platform is important because the lenses are not interchangable with each other. Canon has a better and much broader line and great product, so there is much less chance of outgrowing what they offer. Also, if you go the canon route, the entry level rebel line uses the ef-s lens mount. This mount will accept the ef lenses and the ef-s lenses, while the better higher end models only support the ef lenses, so whenever possible I would avoid the ef-s lenses just in case you upgrade at some point. Fishooked
Id take Canon over anything - my crappy 5mp Canon still takes better pics than my wifes 8mp Sony.

Thor99
15 years ago, there would have been no question. I guess Nikon isn't staying up with the times.

They have some nice products on the point and shoot end, but they really gave up a lot of the high end dslr market. There newest lower priced dslr model has gotten very good reviews, but so are the new canons and with a better overall range it is a wiser investment due to lens compatibility.
