The guy tries to teach us some real world applications, but I am really struggling to pick it up? Is it one of those things that certain people don't get? That is a tough question to answer. Some people don't ever get it, some people just take longer. And sometimes, unfortunately, some teachers just are not very good at teaching. What style are you taking? DMaynard
hsingi.. I'd give it some more time. If it still isn't working, you may want to try another Chinese style or even Tae Kwon Do, which is very popular, and for good reasons.
BroadwayJoe12
Took tae kwon doe from when i was 7-15 years old. I liked it, but it turned into too much of a money thing and not enough training. Competed in many competitions, but I stopped a couple weeks after I got my black belt. It just isn't real world functional. My grandfather taught all my uncles Judo, who in turn taught me as well. That was my favorite form of martial arts until i hit college. I knew I wanted to do something else but didn't know what. TKD was nice, got me flexible, made my kicks incredibly strong, but wasn't as usefull as I wanted. Which is why, for the last 5 years, I've been taking Muay Thai and Brazillian Ju Jitsu. Of course I had to learn to kick completely differently, stand completely differently etc. it was the best thing i've ever done. That having been said, all are great workouts, but it depends on what you want it for. If you say to just kick someones ass than I don't suggest anything to you, becuase the mindset is wrong. However, if you want self defense do something Like Krav Magga..that's what i've suggest for a lot of my girl-friends to take. Not saying you're a girl, but for strictly self-defense it's second to none. If you want to compete in UFC, take Muay Thai and start grappling or wrestling. Judo is also fantastic. Any other questions feel free to PM me!
slowmoe57
Started martial arts when I turned 40. It was something to do with my son at that time. 2 years later he quit but I stayed on. THe style was called Bushi Ban which originated in Pakistan I beleive. I really enjoyed it but my problem was after awhile I would spar and grappel with guys younger and bigger than me and although I would hold my own I kept getting hurt. Pulled Musclel sprained ankels even broke my foot once. Got to the rank of brown belt but failed my black belt test (I was too nervous and chocked badly )one of the most disappointing thing to happen to me. about a year aftetr that I was grappeling with this kid about 50 lbs heavier that me and landed on my rib cage and that was the end of it - I can go to the gym and excersise w/out the injuries and I quit. But my Sensi praised me for the heart I showed and said the door was always open for me to return. I doubt that will ever happen Good Luck to you -- it takes time don't get frustrated it will come to you.
Borgoguy
I have studied several forms of martial arts over the years, but--like Indy--feel Gun-Fu works best in dangerous situations. pMeooVB3olE
