SoFlaJets
will you miss him or be glad that we don't have to waste his roster spot and be able to have another REAL wide receiver available each week? Look, Wallace Wright is worth HIS spot, for his outstanding ST's play. But Smith? he's been very meh since getting here....Here's where I got this tidbit New York Jets interested in ex-Pat WR Kelley Washington but excited about Clowney -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Jets have expressed interest in former Patriots wide receiver Kelley Washington, according to the NFL Network. But don't get too excited about this one, folks. Washington was primarily a special teamer last season and the Jets are loaded at wide receiver. What you should get excited about is the bright future of speedster David Clowney. I'm hearing that a top priority for the new coaching staff is to find out whether or not Clowney is the real deal. I think Clowney will be a big-time player and WR Brad Smith, who took Clowney's roster spot last season, will end up in Cleveland with Eric Mangini, who absolutely loves Smith. Smith made a difficult transition from college quarterback to NFL wide receiver and has shown flashes, but I'd rather have a legit game-breaker like Clowney. faba
Brad Smith the player without a position and not good enough as a QB, receiver or anything else.
Sperm Edwards
Brad Smith sucks. The reason trick plays work with Brown/Williams on Miami, or Randle-El when he was with Pittsburgh, is that those guys are in on non-trick plays on offense. It's the element of surprise that makes it effective more than the play itself. If you know it's coming, containing a direct-snap to a non-QB isn't too hard to contain. And it's no surprise when it's done with Brad Smith. Fine on specials, but we don't need extra WR's whose only real contribution is on special teams coverage. Wallace Wright is plenty. Smith is clearly not developing as a WR. Maybe he will someday, but to hold a guy for 6+ years because maybe someday he'll be good enough to catch 50 passes in a season is dumb. No way. I wonder if Mangini would deal with the Jets as I could see guys like Smith and Bryan Thomas wearing Browns uniforms this year. I wouldn't mind that QB Derek Anderson on the Jets. Hey they gave away a playoff QB for nuthin' last year...

And I think we're as likely to get a draft pick for Brad Smith by himself as we are in a package with Bryan Thomas.
SMC
I wanted Smith cut last year. His gimmick plays got old in 2007 and he pretty much cost the Jets a game last year. As to trading players, I think the Jets will simply cut Smith. He only has 1 year left on his contract so I can't see anyone giving up a pick for him. 124
I like B.Smith, but only if there is a trick play involved. Otherwise, he's garbage. We tried to make him into a Randle El type and that failed. Epically. Time to cut ties with him.

Like Jets fans have done with so many other players, they fell in love with the idea of Brad Smith. At the end of the day, he'll find a team if we cut him, but it's not like there are GMs around the league saying 'we need a guy like Brad Smith on the roster'. You're freaking amazing. How the hell can you figure that out. Mangini couldn't figure it out. You should be coaching in the nfl. Really, though. It's those types of things that I won't miss. I really hope Rex does a better job with coaching this team.

There was a bunch of things Mangini couldn't figure out which other people could. Such as, it's not a good thing to drop a 6'4" 270 lb OLB in Calvin Pace into coverage the majority of the time. TNJet
Let him go. I am happy with Stuckey already, and I'd like to see what Clowney and even Marcus Henry can do with real playing time.

The Brad Smith experiment is definitely coming to a close. It's not over yet, though. The Jets don't have to be in any rush to release him. And they won't. They'll look at him for another summer. WR's take time to develop, and QB's turned WR should take longer. But realistically, if the Jets draft a day one WR, he's all but done here. Wright's holding down a spot with his ST play, Stuckey's already ahead of him, and Clowney deserves a long look. It's disappointing, because the man has all the tools. If the Jets cut him, Mangini won't be the only guy looking.
stoicsentry
I do want to see Brad Smith cut loose, but at the same time I say that with a sense of disappointment since I really think there are some cool things you can do w/him and I feel like we've missed out.
