Jets release David Bowens and Brad Kassell

A couple more salary dumps as the Jets get ready for the start of free agency next Friday. No real susprises here, although Bowens did have his moments in spots during his run with the Jets. Kassell spent last season on injured reserve with a knee problem.

Bowens played in 32 games with seven starts in two seasons with the Jets and recorded 44 tackles (17 solo), 6.5 sacks, one interception, five passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. In 2008, he played in 16 games with five starts at inside linebacker and recorded 31 tackles (14 solo), four sacks, one interception, two passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He originally signed with the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in 2007 after spending seven seasons with the Dolphins.

Kassell played in 32 games with two starts in two seasons with the Jets and recorded 32 special teams tackles in addition to contributing 43 tackles (25 solo) and one pass defensed. Kassell led the team in 2007 with a career-high 23 special teams tackles. He spent the 2008 season on injured reserve (knee). He originally signed with the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in 2006 after spending four seasons with the Titans.

Bowens is simply the odd man out and made too much money to remain on the team. The Jets have 2 high priced OLBs and a 3rd moderately priced OLB on the team. That makes Bowens likely to have a very limited role on the team and at his salary there is no way to keep him.

I hate the Bowens release. He can play DE, OLB or ILB, I don't understand the move at all really.

$$$ and age.

You really don't need any other explanation. The Jets wanted to get younger at LB and spend the money elsewhere.

Kassell gives us a $610,000 cap savings, and Bowens saves $2MM.

Reports on jetsblog are that it saves us 3 mill.

Let the guessing games begin... we never know this stuff for sure...

Well according to... http://www.nyjetscap.com/

Bowens was going to make 1,333,334 in 09' and the JETS save 1,000,000 by cutting him...

Brad Kassell actually saves them ZERO... he was going to and will make 290,000 and the JETS save nothing...

So its actually just a flat million according to them...

All I know is if the reason for cutting Bowens is to clear up $2-3 million (when we're already $15+ million UNDER) then it better mean that Rex Ryan is moving towards bringing Bart Scott, Chris McAlister and Jim Leonhard all to New York.

He was only gonna make 1.3 and it saves 1...

NYJetscap.com could be right, could be wrong.

Either way it was $1-2 million for our best reserve Linebacker.

No excuses now. Bring in Scott or get the **** out of New York.

Those are actually the dead money hits that I have updated on the site ECurb. Bowens was scheduled to make about 2.7 million this year. Kassell was going to make 910K. All together we should have saved a bit over 3 million by releasing those players.

Hopefully we can resign David to a $1-1.5 million a year salary. Would love to have him back.

Oh yeah your right... Bowens was untouchable... and Mangini/Sutton were much better at evaluation of LBers than Rex is...

Because, you know, Rex Ryan wasn't handed 1st round picks like Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs or anything. :rl:

Rex Ryan helped develop guys like Adalius Thomas and Bart Scott but its more likely that Ray Lewis helped more than anything, as well as the Ravens talent department finding guys.

BTW, if Sutton is such a horrid spotter of Linebackers, why is the mighty Rex Ryan keeping him on staff?

Part of me is just waiting for Rex to fail so you can turn on him like you did Mangini.

I'm just glad you have nothing to do with running this team

Did not say I want him to fail, I'm just waiting for it.

I'm sorry I'm not 100% sold on a guy who was fired from his DC position after the 2008 season, not even getting serious consideration for his own teams Head Coaching position, only to be brought back by the Head Coach the team hired. Not to mention never got to be in the Top 3 of any HC'ing search, ever.

But hey, I am far less negative on Rex than I was back before when, you know, we didn't even call scrubs like Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden.

You however are more up & down than anyone on this board. Don't speak of people being over negative.
