PhinHater
On the parkway going 65 and my timing belt snaps. Luckily I was able to get over on the shoulder with no problem. Triple A doesn't tow on the parkway so it cost me $130 to get my car towed off the parkway. Turns out not only did the timing belt go, but apparently the cylinder head is damaged as well. I don't know too much about cars so I hope I said that all right. Anyone ever have to deal with this?? 1.5 years left on my loan. I'm willing to give this car away for free! Just thought I would share my lovely story.

I remember you having problems... didnt I tell you to run from it! (I hope I did!) As it lies... its a $500 car at auction at best... $1500 car fixed... hope that clears up whether or not its worth fixing... as for what to do... how much do you owe on it... 124
A car is a car. As long as it gets you from point A to point B, its good. If it doesn't, its a piece of crap, no matter the brand or name.

Blue book says around $5,000 - but with the way my engine is working I see what ur saying about $1500 fixed. I have 1.5 years left on payments. I want to pay the loan down a bit more and then I think i might head over to Honda this summer and see what I can get that is reliable.

Under $50,000 most cars are about the same... sad but true... a $40k Mustang has some of the same knobs and such as a $13k Taurus... lol Sure there are some nicer things... but Quality does not make a big jump until you hit some real luxury... Well lets just say the #s I gave you are from a program that dealers use... so dont be shocked to hear them... I would say fixed you could get $3-4k for it... make sure you do ti right though... dont let them hide that money in the new car... get a quote you like for your car before you pick a new car... No need to tell them about the repairs unless they ask... ... Just tell them the car has been great...

Just thought I would share my lovely story. That sucks. About ten years ago I had a timing belt snap in the middle of nowhere. My friend and I walked forever until someone kindly offered us a ride to a phone. I remember between the towing and the belt it cost a little over $500. Sorry. Jbro22
I didn't know men drove Jettas. I'm with this, regardless of a guy named Wolf. I'm all about the looks of a car, I could care less how fast it goes. Theres a pretty solid chance I'm not racing for pinks anytime soon, Pottsy. I still don't understand why Kia or Hydaui don't put out a cheap car that looks like a high end sports car.

neckdemon
well i'm in the same boat as EY. that's what you get for being a man driving a friggin VW jetta. can you say latent homosexual kids? lol. btw, timing belt snaps, camshafts quit turning but the crank and pistons don't. pistons slam into open valves. that's probably what happened to your cylinder head. oh...the only thing that remotely saves your manhood is that you hate the phins. but i'm thinking that might be a front now, lol. Before you commit on who will fix it, try finding a messageboard for Jettas. Somebody in your area might be able to help lessen the pain.

Timing belts are prone to break on just about any car at that mileage. The question is was the engine designed to take the valves with it when the belt breaks or not. I think some cars were designed for two different kinds of people. The average person who drives a car until it stops then has it fixed or the people who follow their scheduled maintenance religiously. I think VW fits into the latter category. I think VW fits into that category. I've had 4 Ford trucks and have never replaced even 1. All went well over 100,000. The first almost 200,000 with the orginal water pump, alternator and starter. My current model has 135,000.

Thai Jet
Ecurb: 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition 1.8 Turbo 126k miles on it now. I think i've dropped 5 or 6 grand into it now this past year (since january 08). EY: This isn't a little sissy regular jetta. Men are allowed to drive the wolfsburg 1.8T. Sorry to hear about this. It's not uncommom for the engine to get F'd up when the timing belt goes. It depends on the type of engine. Usually customers have the timing belt replaced at around 90,000 miles as a preventive measure or if the engine is apart for another reason like head gaskets. $80 part with hundred of $$ labor. Reality hurts sometimes... someone had to say it! My last boss most likely would have put an ACV of $250... at best... Thats why I cautioned him when looking for a new car... someone is going to "show" him what he wants for his car... doesnt mean squat though... lol
