FLY

Recommended Posts

This great tune--"Fly", by Nick Drake--just captures this morning's vibe for me. (For those interested, this is an acoustic version, which is minus the cello and violin on the album track.) Please post any songs which have/do evoke some emotion in you.

FHGMw_9Op3A

Please give me a second grace

Please give me a second face

I've fallen far down

The first time around

Now I just sit on the ground in your way

Now if it's time to recompense for what's done

Come, come sit down on the fence in the sun

And the clouds will roll by

And we'll never deny

It's really too hard for to fly.

Please tell me your second name

Please play me your second game

I've fallen so far

For the people you are

I just need your star for a day.

So come, come ride in my my street-car by the bay

For now I must know how fine you are in your way

And the sea sure as I

But she wont need to cry

For it's really too hard for to fly.

Fly

All around the world statues crumble for me

Who knows how long I've loved you

Everywhere I go people stop and they see

Twenty-five years old, my mother, God rest her soul

Iiiii just wanna fly

Put your arms around me baby x2

Iiiii just wanna fly

Put your arms around me baby x2

Yeahhhh

Dance a little stranger show me where you've been

Love can make you hostage wanna do it again

There's no time to think

About the starting and or the end

Well find out I'm told, my mother, she told me so

Iiiii just wanna fly

Put your arms around me baby x2

Yeahhh

Iiiii just wanna fly

Put your arms around me baby x2

Iiiii jussssst waaaant tooo fly x2

(It's drink a tea time on the borderline) << Super Cat >>

All around the world statues crumble for me

Who knows how long I've loved you

Everyone I knows been so good to me

Twenty-five years old, my mother, God rest her soul

Fly High Michelle

W3Ievg11f8c

Six o'clock in the morning

Still sitting here pouring

The drinks 'til they're gone

We did everything together

Would have done it forever

How did we go wrong?

I know that what goes up

Comes down

I didn't know you'd hit the ground

Why d'you have to give it up?

(Fly high Michelle)

Well you was just a little girl

(Fly high Michelle)

I'll never look into your blue eyes

(Fly high Michelle)

Fly high Michelle

We did it just for a good time

A misunderstood time

We lived with the fear

I wish we still could of done things

And not overhung things

I wish you were here

I know I live a life

Of good things

Until a new life begins

Why d'you have to give it up?

(Fly high Michelle)

Well you was just a little girl

(Fly high Michelle)

I'll never look into your blue eyes

(Fly high Michelle)

Fly high Michelle

I say another prayer

Tonight

That i'll see you in the light

You had to give it up

(Fly high Michelle)

Well you was just a little girl

(Fly high Michelle)

I'll never look into your blue eyes

(Fly high Michelle)

Fly high Michelle

You had to give it up

(Fly high Michelle)

Well you was just a little girl

(Fly high Michelle)

I'll never look into your blue eyes

(Fly high Michelle)

Fly high Michelle

Fly high Michelle

Fly high Michelle

Fly high Michelle

I love Nick Drake's stuff. I wish there was more of it.

That Enuff Z'Nuff video is hilarious. There was an actual pretty good song on that record, called "A New Thing".

Yeah, Nick Drake was a genius. Sad about such a gifted musician, singer and writer leaving us so soon.

I always loved the the power riff in "New Thing". Those guys were actually pretty good. I remember them from Howard's show years ago.

way too many have left us too soon BG...Harry Chapin, Tim Hardin, Jim Croce to name just 3. My contention has always been that these artists are irreplaceable-there never is someone that can step in and fill the void...Drake fits the category...who else sounds like that with those kinds of words-beautiful lyrics...I was back to listening to Gram Parsons yesterday-same deal there

There always seems to be such a heavy price tag attached to this sort of genius, no?

Its almost like they see too much...feel too much...have no filter to keep out the raw brightness of life.

Breaks your heart.

Thanks for that Borgo, I never heard that song before. I just looked up the studio version of that and this acoustic version blows it away.

Haunting.

A few of The Smashing Pumpkins' songs make me feel really nostalgic. Especially their version of Landslide. Good Charlotte's The Anthem does a solid job of describing my feelings towards my grade school and the surrounding area.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. For whatever, it's worth, I have to listen to metal or old-school rap in the morning to stay awake or get psyched for the day. But that's not an emotion, lol.

This is a brilliant description of the artist's gift and curse. Very, very well stated, 32. I'm glad you enjoyed the song. We've had a discussion about Drake before, but I'm pissed that I missed him the first time around in the 70s. I've been obsessed with "rock" music, and all its permutations, since I can remember. I still can't figure out how Drake's music eluded me until the mid-90s when a guitar teacher of mine brought him up. It is not an exaggeration that I play his music at least a couple of times each week, especially on weekend mornings. Here's another one of his compositions--Way to Blue--that is very evocative.

Don't you have a word to show what may be done

Have you never heard a way to find the sun

Tell me all that you may know

Show me what you have to show

Won't you come and say

If you know the way to blue?

Have you seen the land living by the breeze

Can you understand a light among the trees

Tell me all that you may know

Show me what you have to show

Tell us all today

If you know the way to blue?

Look through time and find your rhyme

Tell us what you find

We will wait at your gate

Hoping like the blind.

Can you now recall all that you have known?

Will you never fall

When the light has flown?

Tell me all that you may know

Show me what you have to show

Won't you come and say

If you know the way to blue?

I could probably pick any song from The Who's Quadrophenia, Pete Townshend's brilliant look at relationships, drug abuse, and life in post-WWII England. But here are two which always get an emotional response out of me.

Sea and Sand

TLptuo83ewc

Here by the sea and sand

Nothing ever goes as planned,

I just couldn't face going home

It was just a drag on my own.

They finally threw me out

My mom got drunk on stout,

My dad couldn't stand on two feet,

As he lectured about morality.

Now I guess the family's complete,

With me hanging round on the street

Or here on the beach.

The girl I love

Is a perfect dresser,

Wears every fashion

Gets it to the tee.

Heavens above,

I got to match her

She knows just how

She wants her man to be

Leave it to me.

My jacket's gonna be cut slim and checked

Maybe a touch of seersucker with an open neck

I ride a G.S. scooter with my hair cut neat

I wear my wartime coat in the wind and sleet.

I see her dance

Across the ballroom

UV light making starshine

Of her smile.

I am the face,

She has to know me,

I'm dressed up better than anyone

Within a mile.

So how come the other tickets look much better?

Without a penny to spend they dress to the letter.

How come the girls come on oh so cool

Yet when you meet 'em, every one's a fool?

Come sleep on the beach

Keep within my reach

I just want to die with you near

I'm feeling so high with you here.

I'm wet and I'm cold

But thank God I ain't old

Why didn't I ever say what I mean?

I should have split home at fifteen.

There's a story that the grass is so green,

What did I see?

Where have I been?

Dr. Jimmy

RVk8Ze26_PA

(Beautiful second movement at approx. 3:20 is one of the best things Townshend ever wrote.)

Laugh and say I'm green

I've seen things you'll never see.

Talk behind my back

But I'm off the beaten track.

I'll take on anyone

Ain't scared of a bloody nose,

Drink till I drop down

With one eye on my clothes.

What is it? I'll take it.

Who is she? I'll rape it.

Got a bet there? I'll meet it.

Getting High? You can't beat it.

Doctor Jimmy and mister Jim

When I'm pilled you don't notice him,

He only comes out when I drink my gin.

You say she's a virgin.

I'm gonna be the first in.

Her fellah's gonna kill me?

Oh f**king will he.

I'm seeing double

But don't miss me if you can.

There's gonna be trouble

When she choses her man.

What is it? etc.

Doctor Jimmy and mister Jim etc.

Is it me? For a moment

The stars are falling.

The heat is rising

The past is calling.

I'm going back soon

Home to get the baboon.

Who cut up my eye,

Messed up my Levis.

I'm feeling restless

Bring another score around

Maybe something stronger

Could really hold me down.

Quadrophenia was the best to listen to with those big gold Koss headphones from beginning to end BG...masterpiece...they actually ruined it trying to make it into a movie-it wasn't necessary. Theatre of the mind and all....Tommy too

Rock wise, we come from the same place, SFJ. Quadrophenia really is a masterwork. I can still hum virtually every note and chord change from that album. BTW, those headphones are part of the reason I live with tinnitus. I even plugged them into my Sunn amp while practicing bass at ridiculous volumes. Smart.

Bump for a great Borgo thread so I can find it easier. Lol

Okay, for your efforts you get another Nick Drake song, Place to Be.

9IUqN9ozmhw

When I was younger, younger than before

I never saw the truth hanging from the door

And now Im older see it face to face

And now Im older gotta get up clean the place.

And I was green, greener than the hill

Where the flowers grew and the sun shone still

Now Im darker than the deepest sea

Just hand me down, give me a place to be.

And I was strong, strong in the sun

I thought Id see when day is done

Now Im weaker than the palest blue

Oh, so weak in this need for you.

Borgo,

Not the original song I wanted you to hear, but this is another good one.

My first posted utubez!

thanks man.

(saw this guy live in NY and had tears in my eyes)

Wow. Chills. Like Nick Drake, how did I miss Kelly Joe Phelps? I have always loved that slide guitar-driven blues/rock. That guy can play and sing his a$$ off. How unfair is it that someone with his skin tone and youth has that much soul? He reminds me a little of Ben Harper. Thanks for posting the song. I will definitely add some of Phelps' music to my collection.

P.S. Welcome to the world of the "vidiots". We can use your unique perspective. Great job.

Yeah, he's the real deal....he's a little "off" though, lol, I noticed it when I saw him live.

I guess the great ones are.

Borgo, I dont know if you have seen this....David Gilmour at the Royal Albert Hall playing an epic version of "On an Island with Graham Nash and David Crosby doing backing vocals.

Three grizzled survivors of the 60's, at the absolute TOP OF THEIR GAME in this clip.

You can see them all just reveling in each others amazing talent.

Nash and Crosby never sounded "prettier" and David rips some epic solos that I think are amongst his best.

I have to admit I sat slack-jawed with tears in my eyes the first time I saw it.

Still waters me up, lol

Before Cablevision dropped the MOJO HD Music Channel, I caught this concert. Like you, I was floored by the performance, especially about how those two geezers can still sing so well. Adding their concert footage to this thread is apropos because they are clearly flying, if not soaring, which seems to be Gilmour's halmark. He just seems to channel musical phrases from another galaxy or dimension. Guess that's why he fit in so well with Pink Floyd.

EDIT: I think it was RAVE, not MOJO.

Rave is where I saw it too...Its gone? I used to watch the Jools Holland show there too.

I'll have to check.

Here's an early one from David Gray.

Shine

I can see it in your eyes

What I know in my heart is true

That our love it has faded

Like the summer run through

So we'll walk down the shoreline

One last time together

Feel the wind blow our wanderin hearts

Like a feather

But who knows whats waiting

In the wings of time

Dry your eyes

We gotta go where we can shine

Dont be hiding in sorrow

Or clinging to the past

With your beauty so precious

And the season so fast

No matter how cold the horizon appear

Or how far the first night

When I held you near

You gotta rise from these ashes

Like a bird of flame

Step out of the shadow

Weve gotta go where we can shine

For all that we struggle

For all we pretend

It dont come down to nothing

Except love in the end

And ours is a road

That is strewn with goodbyes

But as it unfolds

As it all unwinds

Remember your soul is the one thing

You cant compromise

Take my hand

Were gonna go where we can shine

Were gonna go where we can shine

Were gonna go where we can shine

(and look, and look)

Through the windows of midnight

Moonfoam and silver

They took all the VOOM Network channels off my system in Putnam County. I caught lots of great concerts on RAVE, and they had awesome foreign flicks on Film Fest. I'm not sure why they took them off.

yep. GONE.

Figures.

RAVE was great.

I got plenty of sh*t channels left though.

I was listening to Road by Nick Drake during the final part of my root canal this morning. It was very soothing, and hope it will have the same tranquilizing effect for y'all. (BTW, I have an awesome dentist, and experienced zero pain, even with almost no novocaine.)

A bit of nostalgia with Things Behind the Sun, by Nick Drake. (From the album, Pink Moon.)

T-uBfYkfA9o&feature=rec-HM-r2

Please beware of them that stare

They'll only smile to see you while

Your time away

And once you've seen what they have been

To win the earth just won't seem worth

Your night or your day

Who'll hear what I say.

Look around you find the ground

Is not so far from where you are

Don
