There are several bands and artists in the rock idiom that I just never got. Springsteen is one of them. Though I believe he is talented on some level, I find his songs--especially the lyrics--goofy, and his overblown stage antics almost Vegas-like.

hey we have different opinions about what we like you and I BG, but WTHBS, I can appreciate say a great guitarist in a YouTuber you might post regardless if I like the music (or band) or not.

SFJ, I don't know what it is. I have tried over the years to get into this guy and I just have a mental block about it. I have liked a few songs, then I hear something like "Born in the USA" and want to jump off a cliff. I have the same problem with the Grateful Dead. I would rather go to the dentist than listen to them.

here's my deal with the Boss, When I first became aware of him was in 1973 with the Jon Landau "I have seen the future of RnR" quote in a music store on a bulletin board. Then, after Billy Joel's Piano Man came out my cousin got us tickets in the front row to see him at Rutgers. Near the end of the show there was a whispering thing going on like an invisible wave across the gym floor with everyone saying "Springsteen's here, Springsteen's here". I had forgotten that the guy who would come up on stage was the same guy I read about. So I say "WHO"S SPRINGSTEEN?"

Now I swear this sounds weird but it's the God's Honest Truth bro, Bruce came up onstage after Billy's introduction about a fellow "struggling" Columbia artist who is in the process of recording his 3rd album. They went into Twist And Shout-we were in the 1st row and to me the guy had an actual aura around him-like a Keith Haring graffiti character-I saw it-I swear. That night he looked exactly like he did on the cover of Born To Run-like he left the photo shoot and drove to New Brunswick. After that song "I said "OH, so THAT'S Bruce Springsteen"

Also that he is the most gracious celebrity I've ever met, and I've met dozens. Damn impressive man, even though I haven't absolutely loved everything he's released since 2000, he has stood for me as a sort of artistic barometer of almost everything I wish I could be as an artist since I started doing this work.

I don't hate the guy, I just don't like him as a person. I think he's a phony, he's ripped off so many other artists like Southside Johnny and Bob Dylan, and he's never really done anything original.

Sure, bands like Led Zeppelin and the Beatles started out copying other artists, but they eventually evolved. That's what makes a band or artist great. Bruce never evolved. He just adapted well to whatever corporate formula was in vogue at the time. He fancies himself a Bob Dylan as a songwriter, but he's not all that.

Springsteen and the E-Street band put out two great albums in the 70's but most of the anthology is complete crap. Glory days? That song is an annoying piece of crap.

When he came out it was almost inconceivable for any American rockers to make it. It was all Bowie and Mott, The Who, Zep, Kinks all the English bands and then when I saw Springsteen in Dec 1975 at Seton Hall or Keane I forget which one, I couldn't believe it JM-he actually LOOKED like us hanging in front of the lanes on North Ave-unshaven, hooded sweatshirts sneakers...you remember us our towns used to have brawls against each other at Unami Park

That's an amazing story about the aura. Your passion is noted and impressive, SFJ.

Well he's not famous, selling tons of records, sold out performances, Superbowl half time gig because he sucks or is a bum.

There's no denying the guy has some talent.

But it's not talent that I appreciate.

Jimmy.

I remember taking vitamin B6 for sore finger joints. I think it helped.

Hope you can play without pain soon.

Pretty much what I think about Bruce.

  • He doesn't have a singularly great voice.
  • He isn't some wicked-great guitar player (to put it mildly).
  • He has some very good songs, but so do lots of performers.
  • He doesn't sound too bright in interviews I've seen.
  • He thinks having some musical talent means he knows everything. Kind of like Steve Martin got after a while (I'm talking about like 25-30 years ago). I think he reached a point where he thought everything he did was funny because it was him that was doing it.
  • Bruce seems to think he is all-wise in all aspects of the lives & minds of all people (e.g. "41 Shots") because he's made a fortune in the entertainment industry & had his ass kissed by all around him for as far back as he can likely remember. And it's annoying as hell. I could get past all that if I thought he did any one thing incredibly (other than put out marketable product). I don't want to know how he swings politically.

Basically, I don't see what distinguishes him over many others who are/were as talented or way more talented.

SFJ's initial encounter is understandable enough that it would make a lasting impact. I had similar experiences on two occasions, with Sandra Denton and Gilbert Gottfried.

What kills me is musicians and actors mistaking popularity for importance.

STF up about things you really don't know anything about.

I'm not saying Bruce does this, but many others do.

The problem is really with the general public, which fawns over celebrities--no matter how minor--and hangs on their every word. Do you really care what political or social views Hilary Duff or Coldplay espouse? All this pseudo-intellectuality, and celebrity driven media, goes away tomorrow if folks stopped buying into this stuff. Don't watch Entertainment Tonight, or buy the tabloid rags.

How hard is it to make generic pop tunes that people like? Release a few generic pop tunes that a couple of people enjoy. Make a name for yourself and live off of that name no matter how generic your pop tunes get. You will be Bruce. I don't see what is special about him. He has been making his generic pop tunes longer than some people? So what, That does not make him any different from Kid Rock or Dave Grohl.

Disagree; alot of American bands/artists were signed to huge record contracts--- Lou Reed, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Blue Oyster Cult... to name a few. You also had some underground bands with a cult following like the Flaming Groovies, MC5, Iggy and the Stooges, later on the Ramones and Blondie. Then you had the whole "southern rock" genre of Allman Bros, Lynyrd Skynryd et al.

Steely Dan? Edgar Winter group? Heart and Rush (Canada), Aerosmith? C'mon, alot of American bands got signed, and most of them kicked as much *ss as the English bands.

and then when I saw Springsteen in Dec 1975 at Seton Hall or Keane I forget which one, I couldn't believe it JM-he actually LOOKED like us hanging in front of the lanes on North Ave-unshaven, hooded sweatshirts sneakers...you remember us our towns used to have brawls against each other at Unami Park

I'm not really sure why his manner of dress is important. If anything, it was no less calculated than the Ramones wearing a "uniform". doesn't weigh one iota on the music. Look, if you can't play, if you can't write your own material, you won't make it. It comes down to writing songs, and Bruce wrote some great songs.

But in the last twenty years, has he written any "great" songs? I say no.

I agree with you. I think it all goes back to John Lennon and the whole 60's counterculture thing. I'm just not into the whole copycat schtick and trying to recreate something that wasn't all that in it's day anyway.

I think most people are so cowed by PC that they just say the superficial platitudes that they think will give them some kind of approval among a bunch of elitists scumbags they shouldn't care about what they think to begin with.

I prefer to go out of my way to offend people. I don't want their approval. F 'em all.
