Unless we just get lucky, a rookie WR - particularly someone to be the #1 guy - is something to draft when we have 2 starters in place. Very few prove to be worthy of starting as rookies (particularly in week 1). With the current cap room, IMO we're in the market for a veteran either in FA or through a trade.

Bryan Thomas for Anquan Boldin. There, I said it. Make it happen, Mike.

I can see a #1 draft pick AND a veteran pick up. We were thin at WR before this happened.

What dead cap? The way I read it, Coles let the Jets out of the guaranteed year (hence the "gamble" on his part). He's a $1M cap hit off the team instead of a $7M cap hit on it.

Thats what it seems like after reading it close enough...

That would be fantastic... he was not worth 7 million.. and it was certainly worth saving 6 to cut him...

Just to repeat...

Moss for a 4th

No offense, but the Moss situation was pretty unique and most definitely seen as an aberration by the rest of the league. He had a monster salary and was able to force his exit from Oakland by only being willing to rework his contract for certain teams. It was either accept little in compensation, or cut him and he'll walk to a team of his choice.

If teams compared every deal to Randy Moss's trade, no trade would ever get made because lets face it, who is trading their star for a 5th round pick? It makes no sense in normal circumstances. Johnson's value is probably around a 2nd round pick.

I don't bring them up on a public forum, like you did. so they're not fair game. ;) you're a little too sensitive at times, ECURB.

Considering both of those jobs require as much exposure as possible.. lol

I had customers order from my shop who found me here... nobody bought a car though... lol

I dont talk about the other ventures... I only talked about those because it benefited me...

LAME.

If you thought this offense was going to suck before now its just plain pitiful.

No quarterback and our WRs Cotchery Stuckey and Smith. Again, LAME.

Bad job Rex. BAD JOB.

So now we basically lose our best receiver, both of our blocking TEs and our best run blocker. Wonderful.

Coles sucks. I'm glad he is gone. **** him.

Ok what you and a lot of posters around here don't seem to understand is that even if it were true that Coles sucks (it's not), it would still suck a lot less to have him here.

You REALLY want to see an offense with Cotch as the #1 and a bunch of nobodies and a draft pick next to him? Or what else do you want to do, OVERPAY for some guy like Housh or Boldin that will come here and be exposed as a SCRUB?

Coles was a good player here, and I'm sort of sad to see him go. He was a huge cry baby and was always b!tching about his contract, but he gave 100% every week and was fairly productive.

This is probably the best move for the team in the long term -- that is IF they don't go out and waste a ton of money on Housh, who is basically the same guy as Coles.

We don't need any WRs on the decline. So that means no Housh, no Ocho, no TO. Boldin would work if he didn't require a bunch of draft picks.

We need to draft a legit WR with our 1st or 2nd pick. There are some quality guys out there this year, and I'm sure Rex and Mike have a few in mind. I really like Brian Robiskie as a 2nd round pick. He's a coach's son, that usually makes for a smart player. He's also 6'3" and runs well. Mike Wallace, Deon Butler, and Tiquan Underwood are guys I like for the later rounds.

We have plenty of money free to sign some quality FAs. We NEED a CB in the worst way, let's go out and get a good one.

New York Jets release wide receiver Laveranus Coles

by Dave Hutchinson/Star-Ledger Staff

Wednesday February 25, 2009, 4:13 PM

The Jets released veteran wide receiver Laveranus Coles this afternoon -- but both sides left open the possibility of his return to the team.

Coles, who was scheduled to earn a guaranteed $6 million salary for the 2009-10 season, wanted a long-term deal with the team. But when the two sides could not reach an agreement, they reached a compromise, giving Coles the right to find his own deal on the open market on the eve of free agency.

"We didn't leave on bad terms,'' Coles said. "It's not out of the question that I could come back."

Coles, 31, is taking a gamble , as his contract for the upcoming season was guaranteed, something unusual in the NFL. Coles, however, feels a long-term deal is more important to him than they guarantee.

"I look at it as a long-term thing,'' he said. "It's something my agent (Roosevelt Barnes) and I (discussed) for a long time. I trust my agent. He's been in my corner for a long time. He gave me his opinion. He said he truly believed we could get a long-term deal on the open market and I took his word for it.

"I want to go somewhere where I can finish my career. I don't want to bounce from team to team. I hope to play another three or four years."

The Jets and new coach Rex Ryan told Coles a new deal was not going to happen with them right now.

"Rex and I had a good talk,'' Coles said. "He explained to me that he didn't want to give veterans who are in their second contract a new deal before their current deal was completed.

"I explained to him that my situation was a little bit different because this situation has been ongoing. But I understand what Rex is trying to do and I don't want to jeopardize what he's trying to put in place. He has been honest with me from the word, 'Go.'"

Coles was drafted by the Jets in the third round of the 2000 draft and has played on the team for seven of his nine seasons in the league. He signed a free-agent deal with the Redskins before the start of the 2003 season, but was traded back to the Jets two years later.

Last season, Coles had 70 catches for 850 yards and seven touchdowns. For his career, Coles has 459 catches for 5,941 yards and 37 touchdowns.

The free-agent signing period begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday morning.

"My time with the Jets was great," Coles said. "I love the fans, my teammates and my coaches. I always wanted to finish my career in New York, but I've always said this is a business."

WAY TO GO 128 !!!!! Thanks

I'm sure he let the Jets out of the "guaranteed" 2009 season. Interesting to say the least. The Jets have a lot of cap room now. Wonder if they're going after Boldin. Coles' departure is the only way it could happen.

Sperm, after all these moves, what kind of cap room do the jets have now? And I wonder how they compare to the rest of the league cap wise right now. Seems like they are going to be big players again in free agency and/or the draft.

ON FURTHER REVIEW, COLES WALKED AWAY FROM HIS $6 MILLION

Posted by Mike Florio on February 25, 2009, 5:55 p.m.

OK, now this is getting weird.

Despite a report in the New York Daily News that the guaranteed $6 million in base salary that receiver Laveranues Coles is due to earn from the Jets will be reduced by whatever he earns elsewhere, Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger has clarified for us that Coles has walked away from the guaranteed payment.

So, in other words, Coles gave up $6 million guaranteed in search of even more.

So, in other words, the Jets owe him nothing.
