Maxman 539,383
I hope Gardner beats him out. Was never a huge Melky fan and Gardner can do so many things with that speed. Gives them another dimension. I wonder if he will hit enough to get in the lineup?
Morrissey 13,038
Good stuff TD. Love to hear this type of stuff for Gardner. Gardner manufactures runs.... like we talked about the other day, that his job. Get on base, steal 2B, score on a single. He's also capable of walking, stealing 2B, stealing 3B, and scoring on a ball to left side, or on a fly to the OF.

We haven't had a player like that in quite a while.

MagicBizkit87 7,087
Gardner is clearly going to win this battle. He's already destroying Melky. I think a better position battle would be RF, Nady, and Swisher. Swish is winning it after almost 3 games.

I don't think there is much of a battle for RF, but it's not like Swisher is going to be sent to AAA, he's going to get at bats. With Melky, if he doesn't win the CF job, he might be DFA. AFJF 43,479
I've always been a Melky fan but I'd much rather see Gardner win the job for the same reasons mentioned above. Brings something to the table that the Yankees haven't had in a very long time with his speed on the bases and elite range in CF.

With Cabrera you KNOW he can't do it. At least you have hope with Gardner.

Otter 27,367
I hope that Gardner wins out in center. It seemed like everytime he got on base last year he stole a base. He just needs to improve his OBP. Also, I can't help but think that Cano might be better off with Melky not on the team.

It always took a little while for him to get it going. In AAA last year he had a .296 BA and .414 OBP. If he comes anywhere close to that OBP.. we will be doing cart wheels. Jbro22 95,172
This is how I see it Melky was the man coming up, we didn't have an answer in CF. We had to take on MELKY. And it was a good thing cause the fans loved him, he was that youth the Yanks needed. NO NO NO NO NO Cano, Abreu and Melky ruined this club house. Atleast that's how I see it. Cano and Abreu deserved there spots, but Mekly should have been riding the I'm a rookie MiLB guy. He didn't see it that way, Cano and Abreu let him right in, like he was a little brother. He didn't have to earn his way. This is why I'm happy Bobby is gone. I feel like Robinson will be much better without him. Now I just need Melky gone and Robby becomes an allstar. Those three were way to close last year, way too close.
124 142,407
I'm really, really tired of Melky. It seems with some Yankee fans all they can remember his his great catch against Boston a few years ago and thus, he's amazing. Time to move on.

I remember the the huge clown-like error he made against the pirates a few years ago, when he fell on his ass running down a ball in center because he took a bad route, which allowed an inside the park homer if I remember right. That was awesome. I also remember some people here thought Melky for Mike Gonzalez would have been a bad deal for the yanks. Are you saying that trading Melky for Mike Gonzalez would be a bad deal? TJ surgery slowed him some but that would have been a steal for the Yanks.

That's what I want to hear from this kid. How has he looked at the plate? Is he first swinging everything or does it seems he's comfortable taking and fighting off pitches to get what he wants

I know it's spring training, but there's nothing not to like about Gardner right now.

From all I've heard is THAT is his game, fighting stuff off, taking pitches, until he gets one to put into play. God if he has .350 OBP I'd be over the moon.

GimmeShelter 21,641
Gardner looked very good today. I heard Melky is out of options and wonder how much that will play into things. I don't foresee either player as a bench player due to them being better off getting steady AB's in the minors.
