Jets re-sign Moore to four-year deal

February 27, 2009

A shocker: The Jets, spurned by Steelers free-agent G Chris Kemoeatu earlier in the day, have re-signed RG Brandon Moore, the Daily News has learned.

Moore agreed to a four-year, $16 million contract, including $10 million in guarantees.

This is a smart move by the Jets, who cut Moore yesterday because they didn't want to pay a $7 million roster bonus. They quickly came to their sense and re-signed their best run blocker, keeping their line in tact.

4 year 16 million... + his dead money im assuming...

What dead money? The Jets never gave him a big signing bonus in the past. My numbers say that his "dead" money was under $500K. And all it means is that it comes off the cap this year instead of spreading it over the next 4 seasons. Not a lot of coin.

Ironically, if the Jets held onto him until March 5th, they might not have been able to do this. Moore might have taken issue with the Jets hanging onto him for the first full week of FA only to then release him. Players don't like being used like chess pieces.

Let's hold off on the back-patting until we see the numbers though. If it's for $6M+ per season I think this move is stupid. $4M/season or less & it's ok. The thing that you're supposed to get with 2 (non-bust) first round picks and two high-priced FA's is that you don't have to break the bank on a 5th OL'man.

If we wanted to sign someone else at CB or WR and get outbid by $2M/yr because we paid Brandon Moore like a star, the team is not better off.

Like I said, we'll see. Hopefully we didn't get hosed.

Moore's prior deal:

2009:

$7M roster bonus

$225,483 SB amortization

$680K base salary

-------------------

$7,845,483 total cap hit

2010:

$158,813 SB amortization

$760K base salary

-------------------

$918,813 total cap hit (which I still contend was a pipe dream & he would have held out)

2011:

$2M base salary

$2M roster bonus

$250K workout bonus

--------------------

$4,250,000 total cap hit

2012:

$1.75M base salary

$1M roster bonus (plus a $3M escalator that he probably would have hit)

$250K workout bonus

---------------------

$6,000,000 total cap hit

Total: 4 yrs/$19M (if he didn't hold out in 2010)

I take it back. The overall numbers are out there.

4 yrs, $16M with $10M guaranteed.

Actually it's the pay CUT that Moore wouldn't agree to a few days ago. Interesting.

Maybe this was the plan all along. Cut Moore and scare the crap out of him by making a play for a younger, better player and offering him less than Moore wanted.

If the Jets really wanted Kemo, they could have overpaid and gotten him and still taken a smaller cap hit than Moore's original deal.

For the Jets it was a no brainer. If they don't get Kemo, Moore almost has to sign with them for what they want because he knows he ain't getting more than Kemo.

maybe they guaranteed more money or his phone didn't ring ?
