How Rex got his $48M man

February 28, 2009

In Baltimore, Rex Ryan's defensive players called him "The Mad Scientist." We now know there's a method to his madness, especially when it comes to recruiting.

Ryan's role in the Bart Scott signing got overshadowed by the high stakes bidding war between the Jets and Ravens, but make no mistake, the new coach was instrumental in closing the deal. He knew all about Scott's track record in free agency, and he pressed the right buttons.

In 2006, Scott was on a free-agent visit to the Browns. He was sitting in their offices and was ready to sign a contract, believed to be five years, but he was stricken with a case of cold feet and called Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome. In a short time later, Scott bolted, jilting the Brownies at the altar. He signed a three-year deal with the Ravens.

Mindful of that episode, Ryan gave Scott the up-close-and-personal touch during yesterday's whirlwind recruitment. According to SNY's crack Jets reporter, Steve Overmyer, Ryan and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine - another former Ravens assistant - took Woody Johnson's private jet to Baltimore and showed up at Scott's doorstep early in the morning. When Scott answered the door, Ryan said, "It's time to be a Jet" - or something to that effect.

Once they got to the Jets' facility in New Jersey, Ryan decided after awhile to get out of the building, perhaps to ease Scott's mind and reduce the chances of him having second thoughts. So they went to the nearby Short Hills Mall and, well, browsed. Confessions of a Shopoholic? Hardly, but it probably got Scott's thoughts away from football and the looming contract. When they got back to the office, they were going to watch a movie - some Ultimate Fighting flick, according to Ryan - but that never happened because the deal got done.

Only a naive person would think that no negotiating took place between Scott's agent, the Ravens and the Jets throughout the day, but just maybe, Ryan's buddy-buddy approach did the trick. It may have been the most expensive trip to the mall in history ($48 million) - privately, some in the organization might admit they overpaid - but they got their man.

They took the private Jet? The Private Jet? The Jets have nerve taking OUR PSL money and using it to fly on the private Jet. I want them flying coach on all these trips in the future, this is an outrage.

Can you imagine being in the Short Hills mall yesterday and seeing Ryan walking by with Scott? Hopefully someone did the J E T S chant and made them feel welcome here.

I was thinking about that... It would have been cool if a JN poster could have gotten the inside scoop to us while we all thought he was jetting back to the Ravens... lol

Great job by the new staff on this one... Mangini would not have gotten off his fat ass... hell he didnt even make the drive up to NE for Hank Poteat!
