ECURB
I am looking into bartending for a while to bridge the gap between projects in life and possibly keep doing it for extra cash for a while to come... Just looking for some insight into it... The place I am looking at is on a lake... does OK during the winter but their busy season is obviously the summer months... they want someone (hopefully me) to be sort of an assistant manager / bartender who can handle everything from ordering stock to kicking out *******s on the weekends... lol Thanks in advance for any advice! That fact that you're not a hot chick also hurts you unless you're a really good bartender. I hired most of my bartenders as doorhost, shot girls and waitresses. If you're a dude you start as a barback then become a bartender. Anyway don't waste your time or money going to bartending school it's a joke and I would never hire anyone that only did that. Look for a barbacking job, it pays well and it gets you in the door. I started as a barback and worked my way up to GM so it's not a bad place to start. Also night clubs and titty bars are where you want to go for the most money.

Yeah the schools all look pretty silly... not going that route... I was thinking of getting in as a waiter somewhere or a barback at a club... then this job opened up and I have a chance to jump right into bartending... they serve some food and have a patio too... so I would be bartender/server/bouncer... they need a guy as they already have mostly female bartenders... and want someone who can toss out the drunks and make drinks... I just wasnt sure if it would be worth it... but from talking to people it seems like a pretty good way to make some cash... So I guess the question has sort of morphed into... should I bartend at this smaller place (its not a dive though.. its still nice) or should I barback at a bigger higher traffic place? Bartending is more fun, you make more money and get more pu$$y but you'd be better off at a bigger night club. Start as a barback and work your way into bartending. You're right, I had to start somewhere as well. I actually started as a server and would fill in once in a while when they needed help behind the bar. I disagree with starting as a barback at a bigger club. If someone is willing to train you and 'let' you do inventory, do it. Gaining that experience is a hundred times better than just barbacking. I didn't see don't do the bartending job if it's there he asked what is better and working at a titty bar or night club is a hell of a lot better then working at some hole in the wall dealing with white trash that drinks beer and one liquor shots. He wouldn't learn **** all about mixing drinks, wouldn't make near the money and wouldn't be getting numbers of hot ass college chicks. And barbacking is experience. crashingjet
I did it for years... Lots of fun, late nights etc... Just be craeful though, it's easy to fall into the "lifestyle" of a bartender. Drinking, loose women and rock and roll... Awful It does get tiresome though, if you end up with the same lonely drunks day in and day out, you can end up wanting to end it all. Oh, and watch out for the surly drunks, they'd love to take a swing at the smart ass bartender. Funny story, I was bartending at BAR West Palm, and it was getting close to closing time and there was a completely wasted ass hole holding up the end of the bar, so in my sarcastic way I said "hey, you want a shot or something?" and he puffed up his chest and in a drunken tone said "yeah, I wanna shot at you punk"... Needless to say, he wasn't at the bar for much longer.

Said there was an island guy named Joe waiting outside to take him home pfffft.........everyone knows we have no apricots here in the tropics. question for bartenders........ I was literally thrown out of the million dollar bar in jacksonville wyoming. they were quite proud that they cleared the sidewalk with me, I bounced off a parked car & hit the pavement. I feel I coulda beat the one who challenged me but was blindsided by another. don't think I was ever hit that hard but it was a sucker punch afterall. are bouncers really that tough? have you ever seen em fight & lose?
