Otter
From the Daily News... BY Adam Rubin DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Tuesday, March 3rd 2009, 5:49 PM PORT ST. LUCIE - Pitching coach Dan Warthen said Johan Santana's chances of starting Opening Day in Cincinnati are "almost nil." Warthen instead is eyeing the season's second series against the Marlins, and is adamant Santana shouldn't miss a turn in the rotation. Santana, whose preparations were disrupted last week by elbow tightness, is scheduled to return to the mound at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday for a bullpen session. Warthen expects Santana will face hitters for the first time when he tosses batting practice on March 13. Santana then should pitch in Grapefruit League games March 18 and 22, but that doesn't leave enough to build up his innings count for the April 6 opener in Cincinnati.
