Browns signed CB Hank Poteat, formerly of the Jets.

A loyal Eric Mangini follower, Poteat had 41 tackles and two picks as New York's on-and-off again nickel back last season. He'll compete for the same role in Cleveland. Poteat can also play special teams and safety in a pinch.

Can the Browns go more downhill from here? They were starting to turn around, but they're back at the bottom again.

Half of this year's defense could potentially be on that team next year.

Barton

Bowens

Poteat

Elam

CJ Mosely

Not that any of them by any means are all-stars. But thats 2 starters and 3 guys who saw significant time. Should be exciting to watch that bend for a while- then break defense. Go browns

Hopefully next they can get Brett favre! Then they'll really solidify their team! :face:

We're making similar moves with the Ravens. Except, you know, we're taking good players.

No shock here. It kind of works though. Hate to admit it, but a pretty smart move by Eric this time. Sure Poteat is nothing great, but it works. Poteat gets to go with a coach and system he knows and the Browns get a guy who will already know their defensive playbook, doesn't cost much and is a decent backup. I'm not particularly upset about losing him, but it makes sense for the Browns.

I for one will miss Poteat. I always rooted extra hard when he was in the game. Classic underdog who always hung around and gave 100 % when he was in the game. Very versitle soldier who never made waves and just did his job. Best of luck Hank.

+1

Poteat always played hard and gave 100%. Hope he does well for the Brownies.

What's going on with Ivy? With Poteat gone, we need Ryan's version in the fold. Can't have enough CB's.

I won't cry about it. Ivy blows. He knows the playbook cold but brings little else IMO. I have doubts that he's even an upgrade to Lowery. Lowery (theoretically) has upside; Ivy doesn't.

All Poteat did was play well for us. Ed Reed, no , but he was better than a lot of the crap we've had in that secondary over the last few years.

Smart move by Mangini I think..bring good guys into the locker room to spread the word about being team players followed with hard work..There not all stars but guys that bring the right attitude and will stop the cancer of "ME" inside the Browns...real smart by EM

I think thats what he was saying Eric. Poteat's no Ed Reed but he was decent for us and better than some players we've had in the secondary.

Saying, 'he's no ed reed, but...' is to imply that he's still a pretty good player.

Poteat is not a good player. He's below average. Any time he was on the field for us it was obvious we were undermanned at the position.

And yeah, he played hard for us, blah, blah, blah... but he's just not a very good player... see ya.

Well of course. He's a real, real smart guy. What would you expect him to do other than real smart things?

I liked Poteat a lot, he's a really good #3 Corner who can play Corner, Safety and once in a while, spot start. But you know what? We already have one of those on the roster (Dwight Lowery).

Right now the Jets CB's are Revis, Sheppard, Lowery.... then Coleman. Not an ideal situation. Would've liked to've held onto Poteat as a decent reserve. That's why I'd like a guy like Ivy now, who Ryan seems to know and trust. As it stands, should a guy like Sheppard get dinged (which seems likely), Drew Coleman is your nickel back that week.

Could address CB in the draft and if not, I have zero problem with Drew Coleman as the NB. This the same guy who STARTED in 2006 and after that, for whatever reason, got in the dog house of Mangini. After the Bears game in which he missed the big tackle on the only TD of the game, Mangini has barely used him.

We'll see what Rex thinks of him.

I would have liked hanging on to Poteat too, at the right price. Who knows he may be back after the season starts. It wouldn't be the 1st time. :)

I would think for sure we'll go CB at some point in the draft.

I'm fine with that. But Drew Coleman is awful. Poteat sucked as well; he was mediocre that first season we had him & terrible after that. Ivy sucks & was the backup that everyone picked on the one year Baltimore's defense gave up all those passing TD's (in '07). His only upside is that he knows the playbook already.
