Beating Patriots isn't easy, but it's possible

Beating the New England Patriots is a difficult task. Just ask the Indianapolis Colts, who haven't done it in Foxboro since 1995, or the Pittsburgh Steelers, who lost to them twice in the past four years with the AFC Championship at stake.

Yet difficult as it is, it is not impossible, as the Steelers and the Miami Dolphins proved a year ago during a regular season in which New England went 14-2 on its way to its third Super Bowl championship in four years.

It can be done on the right day (or the wrong day, if you are wearing Patriots colors). It just couldn't be done the past few years by the Steelers or the Colts when it counted most, in the playoffs. If your aim is to beat Tom Brady's team, it's best to do it before the playoffs because New England's remarkable quarterback is 9-0 in the postseason since he took over from Drew Bledsoe in 2001. And by the way, stay out of overtime, too, because Brady is 7-0 when the game goes into football's equivalent of extra innings.

Assuming you avoid those two can't-win situations, then what scenarios might work? Here are five possible ways to get yourself a win against the new millennium's first football dynasty.

1. Put Brady on his back and the ball on the ground.

Good as he is, and you can argue Brady is the best if your judgment is based on jewelry, he can't beat you from his back. What he can do, however, is beat himself as he did against the Steelers last season, when Pittsburgh put a bit too much heat on him and his mates. Brady was sacked four times and threw two interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown that gave the Steelers a 21-3 first-quarter lead, as New England turned the ball over four times.

John Elway once said "I don't care who you are. They hit you enough and you don't see straight.
