New York Jets set to begin offseason workout program on Monday

Luc Leclerc/US PresswireNew Jets coach Rex Ryan will get his first look at Brett Favre's would-be successors, Kellen Clemens (11) and Brett Ratliff (5) when the Jets' offseason camp begins Monday.

The Jets will start their offseason condition program on Monday at their Florham Park training complex, giving new coach Rex Ryan the first chance to meet and greet his players.

The charismatic coach, who proclaimed that ``The Jets are coming'' during his introductory news conference in January, has spoken to many, if not all, of his players in person or via the telephone but this will be his first opportunity to see his entire team.

It's unclear if Ryan will hold a team meeting this week or simply let players work out in individual groups and drop in on each session. All players are expected to attend.

The Jets will hold three sessions daily on the days players are scheduled to work out. The main focus will be on conditioning and weight lifting (my money is on RB Thomas Jones to beat back on all comers on the bench press).

But Ryan will begin installing his complex, blitz-happy defensive schemes (S Kerry Rhodes can hardly contain himself) and will get a chance to see quarterbacks Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff fire the opening salvos in their much-anticipated battle for the No. 1 job.

I know many of you are concerned about the quarterback situation, but I think either Clemens or Ratliff can do the job because Ryan plans on winning with his in-your-face defense led by trash-talking linebacker Bart Scott and a smash-mouth running game.

Of course, the Jets are still in the market for a No. 1 receiver and my guess is they'll take a wide out with their first-round pick (17th overall) -- if Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman doesn't fall into their lap.

But the truth be told, I like David Clowney. While the Jets could use a young playmaking wide receiver, I hope Clowney gets a shot.

Why not draft for need? The Jets biggest need is a deep threat WR and that is exactly who they should draft.

kenny britt. or hakeem nicks. i read that britt has a tendency to take plays off but nicks is a true team player. so its a toss-up

Because a lot of teams "reach" for a player who let's say is a late second round talent because he's the best "need" position player still on the board.

Agreed. But you don't draft purely BPA either, because that's not always clear.

You draft for a combination of need and value. You don't take a WR in the first round just because you need one, but you take a WR over an OT in the first round if both present roughly equal value at that pick.

I've always got to laugh after the draft when every FO says " We got the man we wanted all along" .

Yeah, I remember that line when we passed on Marino and Sapp. Just more proof that the FO doesn't always have some secret info that makes them wiser than the fans when it comes to the draft. Anyone have that jets draft-day montage of the bad picks and fan reactions over the past two decades. I saw it somewhere and had to laugh. then cringe.
