BroadwayJ667
by Dave Hutchinson Sunday March 15, 2009, 2:27 PM As first reported in The Star Ledger last month, the Jets are very interested in Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman. How interested? They've scheduled a private workout with him this week, according to NFL.com. On Monday, Freeman will have a chalk talk with Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and on Tuesday, he'll work out for coach Rex Ryan, general manager Mike Tannenbaum and Schottenheimer. It's unknown where the interview/work out will take place. Freeman, a 6-foot-6, 250-pound junior, is shooting up the charts after an impressive showing at the NFL Combine and a Kansas State Pro Day. He has a big arm and is mobile. As I've said, I think the Jets are fully prepared to go with either Kellen Clemens or Brett Ratliff at quarterback, but if Freeman falls to them at 17th overall it's unlikely they'll pass him up. The Jets have also shown interest in USC QB Mark Sanchez but he's expected to be long gone by the time they're on the clock. Having addressed nearly all of their needs in free agency, the Jets will likely select the player highest on their board with their first-round pick, Quarterback, wide receiver, cornerback and linebacker are among the positions they're looking at. Keep an eye on Illinois CB Vontae Davis although as I've reported, the Jets are concerned about some character issues.
BroadwayJ667
all well and good, but they better get one of the receivers named Hakeem Nicks, Kenny Britt, or Ramses Barden to throw to. hell i'll even soften on DHB after seeing some tape, (he catches with his hands, big plus) and that he had a great pro day

While I honestly don't know a ton about the guy, Freeman seems like an interesting prospect and if the Jets think he's for real, I don't think guys like Ratliff and Clemens can make you pass on him. Although I find it interesting that not long ago it seems the talk was that Freeman might be a reach at 17 while now reports seem to indicate that the Jets would have to seriously consider him if he's even still available at that spot. Of course, the same could be said for Flacco's rise up charts before getting taken as high as he was by the Ravens. Also combine that with the fact that I am beyond frightened of Mark Sanchez, he seems like a very interesting QB prospect. The one thing I found beyond strange though is the bolded part in the quote above. While I don't quite get how the Jets could still consider going CB in the first round, in what f'n world is linebacker even an option?!? With Scott, Harris, Pace, Thomas and Gholston you're going to add another first round pick on top of that? It doesn't make sense positionally or financially. Maybe you could argue that you'd like to upgrade Thomas and Gholston is still an unknown, are you really going to go OLB at 17 with those guys still there? That just sounds like such an odd thing to even consider.
JoeWillie
When will these guys learn that you can't assess whether or not a team is really interested in someone based on private or public workouts. It's just as likely that this is a "smoke screen" designed to set up a possible "trade down" scenario.

Thai Jet
Good. He is the best QB prospect in this draft. I haven't seen enogh game films of Freeman to tell how good (or bad) he is. I HAVE seen almost every USC game this year and I KNOW I don't like Sanchez. Stafford looked great in 07' but kinda stunk it up, especially against the better teams, this past year. So Freemaqn could very well be the best of a really poor QB group.
neckdemon
Exactly !! From here till the draft believe nothing that's said or done by any FO. you really think they're gonna go to the trouble of meeting with the guy...going over x's and o's....and then having him work out for the FO.....all in an attempt to put up some sort of smoke screen that they might be interested in him at qb if he's there at 17 so they could trade down a couple of spots? sounds stupid to me. maybe they're just legitimately interested in seeing what he looks like so if he's there at 17 they know whether or not they want him. I don't think there's any teams that would see the guy they have highest on their list available and say hmm lets go with our 2nd or 3rd best choice. I don't think there's any teams that would see the guy they have highest on their list available and say hmm lets go with our 2nd or 3rd best choice. What it means is they are going to have a board of players they like the best, not a board of needs. Thats all it means. They Jets won't be picking for need, they'll be picking BPA in their eyes at that time. It all comes down to how they rate them.

Absolutely. It happens all the time. It's a way of manipulating other teams into doing something that will better serve you and EVERY team does it EVERY year. And it's worth it if you can trade down and potentially get two players on your board as opposed to one.

Also just to add to that,... we dont know what they actually are going to do when they meet him... it might be a 5 minute meeting but they will make sure that the guy who leaks stuff to the press on purpose will tell them it was a long serious grueling interview. 124
That means nothing. Sure it does. You have to do your due dilligence and if the Jets believe he's the best QB in the draft, or even the best QB that will be there available to them at 17, and they view QB as a need, you take him. CoachTsurfing
Drafting Freeman in the 1st through 3rd rounds is a mistake. He won't be anything special. At most he will be a decent back-up if he learns control.
