Sorry, but you really won't find zeppolis in little italy other than during the feast of San Genaro. But if you do go try a cannoli at Snacky's between canal and hester on mulberry, the first block of little italy. They fill their cannolis fresh so they ren't all soggy or stale. The cupcakes are good too, and HUGE. 2jHPN3-dpnY

Waiting over an our for dinner, then having 10,000 people on every block, it's just too much.

Borgoguy
the region of Staten Island?? When I came over in 1960 it pretty much was. About 80-90% of my neighborhood was from the other side, or at least had a member of their family who was. My Mom has worked at a bakery on Staten Island for the last 25 years. No way any mortal can finish more than one of those San Giuseppe pastries. There is more oil, sugar and pastry cream to kill a mule. It's worth it though. Man, the house would smell good. Too bad the drapes held that oil smell until June.
JerryK
I hate to admit it, but I've never heard of St Joseph's day. Is this the same Joseph with the little statues that you bury to sell your house?

With that being said, what the community board tries to do to kill business in lower manhattan is disgusting.

Borgoguy
photo: I want to say that I was just looking at that delicious pastry, but I won't lie. Wow, is that gorgeous, the pastry I mean, of course. Does she use pastry cream or a ricotta based one? You are very lucky to still have grandparents that carry on the old traditions. Make sure you write the recipes down, and watch your grandma as she makes them. All cooks leave stuff out of recipes to make there's better. She doesn't really have a "real" recipe, it's just a little bit of this, a little bit of that. She makes the zeppoli dough, fries it. Lets them cool a bit. The cannoli cream is marscapone cheese based. She cuts the zeppoli in the middle (like-a sang-a-wich) and puts the cannoli cream. Then she spreads more cream on top. Tops it with powdered sugar, nuts, cherries, and fruit. Delicioso!
