faba Posted March 25, 2009 Share Posted March 25, 2009 Tom Kowalski of Michigan Live reports Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said today that he would be willing trade down from the No. 1 position in the draft -- and also the No. 20 spot. Mayhew said his philosophy will be geared more toward trading down and acquiring picks as opposed to surrendering them by trading up. Mayhew said he hasn't gotten a lot of calls about that top spot yet, but he really didn't expect to. "There hasn't been a lot of interest in acquiring that pick at this point. But I would think that if there's interest in doing that, it would come later as we approach the draft,'' Mayhew said. "If there is interest, it'll come at that point. It's a little early for somebody to have made that decision to go after that pick. "We'd definitely be interested in that and I've already talked to a few teams about trading down from 20.'' The Lions want to stockpile picks rather than pay the 1st overall big money. Because they have 2 first round picks, one that can be used for a franchise Qb, the other used to recoup more more picks. Aaron Curry is clearly the best player in the draft and illustrates the point perfectly. As good a player as he is, the right to pay him first overall money just isn't worth very much. As a parting gift for having the league's worst record, you get to take the league's most expensive gamble in the draft. Hooray.
