Garb
I had the pleasure of announcing this at work today. But hey, it sure beats the sh*t out of being laid off. It does.....sad. We had a meeting at my work last week. I think it was a scare tactic. The whole - "business is not good, but it could be worse. Although we had a few lay-off's in November, I don't see anymore anytime soon....but you never know." What the heck is that? A whole lot of nothing. I see the daily deposits at work. I KNOW we aren't doing well. I KNOW there will be lay-off's. I hope I'm not one of them, but if I am, please let it be in June so I can enjoy it a little before panic sets in. I know of one person who has been out of work for almost a year. That's frightening.

Did you know that part of the stimulus package has a COBRA provision in it? Anyone laid off between 9/08 to 12/09 - who elects COBRA - is eligible to have their COBRA payments cut by 65%. The company pays the rest - and gets to deduct it via quarterly or year-end taxes. That helps the poor shleps. Heck, I could be one of those poor schleps. I could help me. LOL! That helps the poor shleps. Heck, I could be one of those poor schleps. I could help me. LOL! Glad to hear that. I got laid off in Jan 08 so I didn't benefit. I'm still paying COBRA at ridiculous rates, but it's better than no health insurance. My husband got critically ill out of nowhere, but thank goodness he survived (the doctors didn't expect him to live). If we didn't have health insurance, we would have lost the house and everything. It took me almost a year to find another job without having to move. I was in senior management and all those jobs were in Boston and Chicago, neither place we wanted to live. Fortunately, I found a job that lets me work from home. But it's a scary situation to lose a job, especially when it's not performance-based. In my case, they decided to cut out a layer of management and a bunch of us were let go. My old company had 5 waves of layoffs within a year (I was in round 2) and is not done yet. Another is expected in May, according to rumors. Max - While people grumble about a pay cut, it is so much better than letting people go. I know, I've been in both situations - laying people off and being laid off. I would have gladly taken a pay cut than be part of a "reduction in force." This cut is what got my vote. It is actually a 10% company savings when you factor in raises and bonuses for 2009 that were given back as well. That beats a 10% layoff, no doubt. JerryK
My opinion is, if they don't have the money to pay you, they can't afford to enforce the no-compete agreement. I'd call every customer within 72hrs.

Garb
Dang, Joe, that's tough. I feel for the folks with families to support. The worry has to be overwhelming sometimes. I'm one of those lucky people that has a job with really good benefits - but Ill tell yah, if I get laid off, I'm going to view it as an opptunity to get the eff out of the office life. I feel like a caged monkey - a well-dressed, suit wearing monkey. I've already reconciled with the fact that I will never be rich, I may as well be happy doing what I do for a living, you know? But right now - that sort of idealism is a fantasy. Be happy with what you got, right?

I hear that. I work nights, weekends, holidays... sometimes it gets old. But when there's bad weather and they announce over the PA that, "all non-essential personnel can go home for the day at lunch," I know they don't mean me. I don't even get a designated lunch break. Some guys in my group gripe that we're never offered the early retirement packages, but I'm young enough to appreciate that we're never in the layoff discussions, either. Same here, GOB. I work for a privately held Japanese company. While they are notorious for running an extremely lean ship (i.e. being cheap), there is a large amount of job security, so I feel fairly secure in my employment status.
