Since American Idiot was released, I have been saying to my wife that Green Day is in a tough spot. They created a brilliant masterwork with that last album, and it will be almost impossible to top. IMO, American Idiot would have been considered a classic even if it had been released in rock's golden years, the 60s and 70s. I can't wait to hear the new record. Thanks for the info., 128.

They jumped the shark before American Idiot IMO. The fact that 128 likes them further cements this.

American Idiot is vastly overrated.

Again, with respect, Pete Townshend would have been proud if he penned that record. Somehow, they channeled 70s power rock--specifically The Who and The James Gang--and gave it a fresh modern sound. I put that album with some of the finest made during the 70s, or any other era.

With respect, I totally disagree. The last "concept" albums with that much raw energy and balls were Who's Next and Quadrophenia.

+1 one of the best albums in the last 5 years --

thats right I said albums what of it....

Green Day sold out a while ago.

To say a band SOLD OUT - Is a fukking joke -- I mean cmon because they get popular and go mainstream they get the dreaded sold out monicker - I have been listening to bands for many a year now and get sick and tired of this **** - no disrespect intended but please all bands will do it -- no matter who.

we will see what GD comes up with next --

BTW WE I have always respected your taste in music despite what the so called Know it alls say

By sold out--I mean appealed directly to the mainstream by making commercially successful music. I really dislike it when bands shy away from their controversial/interesting/long/different original albums and veer towards what makes them money. It changes the whole philosophy of the band from what they personally believe in and like to write songs about and what the mainstream wants. I disagree strongly with "all bands will do it", but I guess it's worse when they just continue with it. I can like a band if they go back to their old stuff, though. What they truly like.

I don't want to discredit their success by saying this, but I just like it best when people are writing music because they believe in it, independent of commercial success. If what they believe in is somewhat mainstream, go with that. I honestly didn't find American Idiot as appealing as their earlier stuff because it lacked...something. Don't know what.

I know it's a quite broad placename, but I hope this shows what I use it for, and why I dislike it. If not, whatever.
