Jets scouting upstate colleges for camps

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - When the Jets set up training camp in July, it most likely won't be at their new Atlantic Health Jets Training Center here.

Despite the state-of-the-art amenities in the $75 million building, Jets coach Rex Ryan is scouting upstate colleges to hold his first training camp.

"Coach Ryan is looking to find a more isolated environment for training camp to promote team building, and we are researching potential locations," Jets spokesperson Bruce Speight said in a statement. "However, any plans will also include community events at our Atlantic Health Jets Training Center and in Long Island prior to the start of the regular season."

Several players said the possible move was well-known.

The story was first reported on LoHud.com last night.

Many around the team had wondered about the logistics of holding training camp in Florham Park. There isn't spectator seating or parking to accommodate the thousands of fans who usually come to watch each day. Hofstra, where the Jets trained until last year, was also being considered for camp.

Last September the Jets moved to the new facility, which has training rooms with hot and cold tubs, classrooms, two cafeterias, four outdoor football fields and an indoor turf field. There were additions after the season, including a wall of Jets Hall of Famers and Pro Bowlers

The Jets are exploring several options on where to hold their training camp this summer, with numerous reports saying the possible destination has been narrowed down to Cornell, in Ithaca, N.Y., and SUNY Cortland, in Cortland, N.Y.

Regardless of which destination is chosen, training camp will not be held at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park.

In the past, they've held it at their former Hofstra University training complex, but after building a new $75 million complex on a 27-acre campus in Florham Park, it was presumed the team would hold training camp at the expensive and expansive facility.

However, one of the reasons behind the move is that new coach Rex Ryan, characterized by his "old-school" approach, wants to take the team to a secluded place.

When Ryan's father Buddy was the Jets' defensive coordinator in the 1960s, the team prepared for the season at a training camp in Peekskill, N.Y. Ryan the younger is trying to move the team to a similar location in his first season at the helm to build camaraderie, according to a Jets spokesman.

"Coach Ryan is looking to find a more isolated environment for training camp to promote team building and we are researching potential locations," the spokesman, Bruce Speight, said in a statement. "However, any plans will also include community events at our Atlantic Health Jets Training Center and in Long Island prior to the start of the regular season."

The move would also filter out distractions and get his players away from home. The Jets' Florham Park facility is still sparkling and less than a year old, but it doesn't have dorms to house the players. Nor does it have bleachers around the campus' five fields for fans to watch the team practice during training camp.

Friday's Cortland Standard reported that the Jets have had contact with SUNY Cortland officials.

"It was senior staff in logistics and operations," college spokesman Pete Koryzno told the Standard. "They were here for a couple of hours. The view from the stadium press box alone impressed them."

Anyone else find this ridiculous? The Jets spend $75 million dollars on a complex and will not use if for training camp? And bleachers not built in for events?

does seem a little nutty..I wonder if that was the idea all along or if Rex changed it up..

that was my original idea

but

how many teams have camp at their regular facility ?

the dorm rooms are the problems

sure the regulars live nearby, but there will be probably 50 rooks that need housing

this may be a blessing in disguise, the team will get a real camp feel

depending on where they go, this could be a cool thing, you can get a hotel nearby and make a weekend trip of it

maybe we get a JN trip going ?

I still think this makes no sense to me- we build a brand new facility that the Jets were glowing about and now it is not good enough for training camp.

I'm not being a wise ass, but can you name another team that uses it's normal practice faciltiy for training camp ?

maybe the cowboys ?

the amazing part is apparently it took rex to notice this

that is a head shaker

The Cowboys actually have their training camp all the way in California. I don't know why people are freaking out about this, pretty much every team uses an off site location for training camp. This is a normal practice, I'm surprised everyone assumed training camp would be at the new HQ cause that's very rare in the NFL.

They will not commit to training camp at Florham Park until they have come up with a suitable bleacher PSL plan.

Why didnt they spend an extra Million and add a couple of dorm rooms on the facility?

Because they expected a large Ancillary facility w/2 large scale hotels to be built just outside of the location.

With the economy in the condition it's in right now, many companies are pulling back on new construction - Especially in the hotel industry.

Dave & Busters is a perfect example of this.

  • They were to build a new location in the new ancillary
    • Instead, they are renovating the prior "BENNINGANS" on the Livingston/Florham Park border (3 miles from the facility)

Besides, do you really think Woody paid out cent one on this training facility?

Why did they get naming rights for it if they did?

It really wasn't assumed, it was said. That is why they announced they were leaving Hofstra.

Yup they said having the TC at the new facility would lead to better results on the field because of all the new equipment...

Since the days of Joe Namath, we were training at Hofstra and each year I went to practice with my friends and watched the team workout. It has been a great tradition. Now, not only do they move out of state but the road trip we had thought we would do to Florham Park, to start a new tradition, is now off. But hey! If they can come up with PSL's, why not also make training camp fan unfriendly as well!

Do you want a fan friendly training camp or a team totally focused and prepared for the season. In recent years, training camp is more about entertaining the fans than anything else. I say shut the fans out of camp, if your gonna win!! Whatever it takes, i will trade never seeing camp again in axchange for some super bowl champion apparrel etc

the more I think about this, the more I like it. No, check that, I LOVE IT

sure, it makes the jets brass look pretty dumb, I mean it's almost April and they don't know where TC will be held yet

but

first and foremost, i think it's great for the team. it's old school man, the team gets taken away from the comfy confines of home and floral park, and they have to pair up with a room mate at some college dorm

LOVE IT

no distractions, just football. male bonding at it's finest

I grew up on LI, and my first Jets game was at Shea

right now, there is nothing NY about the JETS, nothing

I'm sure the NJ guys don't give a crap, but as a guy who spent the first 20 years of his life in NY, I like the idea of the jets TC being in NY. No, check that

LOVE IT

I think this provides an interesting opportunity as well

road trip !!!!!

I'm planning on making a weekend of it wherever they wind up, complete with drunken stupidity

So that's why the Jets haven't won a Super Bowl in 40 years.

They never went into the boondocks for training camp so they could get away from it

all.

I've been on Jet message boards for 10 years and never have I read that anyone

suggest that they should go anywhere except hofstra.

All of a sudden a few experts pop up on this thread and say its a good idea to

go upstate NY. How come it wasn't mentioned last year when the Florham park

site was opened.

The Jets said training camp would be in NJ. Just another reason for the media

to tkae shots at them and they deserve it.

Max

IF this becomes a reality, why not get a JN road trip going ?

I (and others) were planning on taking many road trips to Florham Park and providing free camp reports.

I am beginning to think this is all a conspiracy designed just to keep JetNation down.

Wow, I wonder what they did with the remaining wall in the closet after they put those 2 walls together.

Seriously....that could the smallest wall in the history of sports.

They need Dorms people. Simple as that.

Just like I said Yesterday...

They expected a large Ancillary facility w/2 large scale hotels to be built just outside of the location.

    • Instead, they are renovating the prior "BENNINGANS" on the Livingston/Florham Park border (3 miles from the facility)

Once the season begins, the facility will be available for the general public to view on non-screening days, just like it was at Hofstra.
