i'd rather they not retire 28. He never won anything, he never played big in a big game. He has a rushing title though...send him to the HOF!

Great argument Drago. I didn't know my argument about retiring someone's # had any similarity to sending a player to the HOF. Pennington won Comeback player of the Year, play 2 full seasons, and outside his first season when we were a field goal away from a SB, Pennington hasn't taken us very far.

If there's one thing Martin did that Pennington never did, Martin was a player who constantly produced year in and year out.

imagine if you went out and bought a Lowery jersey last year, you are f@#ked...these guys shouldn't be allowed to change #'s just because they like a different one better..just another marketing tool by the man...

Yeah they shouldn't be able to change numbers because someone bought there jersey. Come on.

Why? You bought their 2008 jersey... not their 2009 jersey...

Im guessing you don't buy many jerseys

#'s arent a big deal to me... I hate when they leave the team... lol... Chad and Vilma for example...

Changing #'s is a year to year thing... its kind of cool if you have a Lowery rookie jersey now... if he winds up being good you have a way to prove you were an earlier supporter...

Wait theres people that feel Chads number should be retired?

I don't think they should retire it, but they could show it a little respect. Like they did with Boozer, Riggins, Klecko. They didn't give those guys numbers out right away. I'm pretty sure they haven't given out another #90 either.

They aren't. Seen Chad Ochocinco. If you bought a Lowery you probably had to custom order it, so it's on your head, Oscar.

Just like the fans who taped 4's over the 10's last year? I don't think respect needs to be served for Chad.

There are a lot of people that play year in and year out but not all of them have their numbers retired. Martin was a good for his whole career except the last one. I don't think that deserves a retired number or a spot in the HOF. JMO.

he is the 4th or 5th leading rusher of all time...does Barry Sanders belong?

Just to get things straight, you don't think Pennington's # should be retired either then?

I never mentioned HOF in my first post, you did. I think a retired # is something completely different and should be considered for players who set a new standard for their respective clubs. Klecko did some great things when he was with the Jets, that's why his # is retired but he's not in the HOF which I can deal with.

1995 Rushing rank 3rd, yards 1487, avg 4.0

1996 9th, 1152, 3.6

1997 8th, 1160, 4.2

1998 (Jets), 8th, 1287, 3.5

1999 2nd, 1464, 4.0

2000 12th, 1204, 3.8

2001 5th, 1513, 4.5

2002 15th, 1094, 4.2

2003 12th, 1308, 4.0

2004 1st, 1696, 4.8

2005 (injured) 26th, 735, 3.3

Like I said before, he was a good running back but no where near worthy of retiring his number. Let alone making the HOF. Isn't the HOF asking that the players being elected be a dominant player at their position for their respective era? Martin was never dominant. He was generally top ten and twice was top two, although he was twice held to under 4.0 yards per carry.

If you want to compare him to HOF running backs ask how many times other HOF backs have been held to below 4 yards per carry.

Barry - Lowest YPC 4.3...twice

Payton- 3 times, once as a rookie, once in his last year on some awful teams. The Jets were bad some years but never as bad as the early 80's Bears.

Faulk (assuming) - 3 times, twice on the colts once after Warner was hurt

Brown - Was only below 5 YPC three times, never below 3 YPC.

Simpson - 3 times, twice with the 49ers and once as a rookie

I'd use Emmitt Smith but he was a compiler on some great teams, he and Martin should get together and talk about all their attempts and how they were better than average for their whole careers and how the get worshiped for it.

Give me 3 years of a Clinton Portis or even Brandon Jacobs than 10 of the compiler. Running backs should be exlosive for three to five years, then get rid of them.

It's a young man's game. Martin was good but he was not great.

Chad was a great professional and if i had kids, i'd love them to admire Chad. I think they should have told ainge to screw himself in wanting the number this year. No way should it be retired but come on...ainge? The dude may not even make the team this year...pending on how we draft.

But in no way should it be retired for good...so yeah, we are in agreement (i think).

You have no clue what you are talking about.

"Average" running backs don't wind up 4th all-time.
