Mangini's biggest mistake

Recommended Posts

OK. Bring it on! I'll say it! Mangini's failure to take Cutler was the biggest failure of his time w/the Jets. Will be viewed similarly to the Marino mistake. Agree?

Totally 100% disagree.

I actually think Mangini WANTED Cutler, but Tannenbaum did not. Why do I think that? Because the Browns went after him from all reports (assuming they are true). Why would he go after him unless he really liked him? It's not like Anderson or Quinn totally suck.

disagree, I don't know how much power he has over who gets to be a jet or not, but just recently i'd say letting penny go. not because i think he is a great qb, but he is better then what we have and people had to know that favre was going to be a one and done deal.

He got Favre fever! lol

I would say his biggest mistake was not convincing Tanny to trade Chad after the 06' season... and instead named him starter... and I was a Chad fan... but they knew he was not their long term guy and he had some value heading into 07'.

Mangini does not draft.

But he does have tons of input.

And although Cutler would've been a great selection for us, you need to have an Offensive Line to protect the Quarterback (Left Tackle being the most important of the five lineman, for the QB) before you can get a Franchise Quarterback. We made the right decision by taking D'Brickashaw at four. That is one of the very few things Mangini did right here, when you look back at it all.

Well if your going to give credit to Mangini for the Oline your crazy... he blew the entire 07' season because of the way he ****ed up the Kendall situation... Tanny drafted Oline... Tanny went out and got Faneca...

Mangini is a good X's and O's guy... he cannot manage a football team and certainly not a roster...

The Head Coach ALWAYS has say on who he wants, unless your owner/GM is Jerry Jones or Daniel Snyder. Mangini and Tannenbaum were both to blame for the Pete Kendall fiasco, both obviously believed that Adrien Clarke could do the job. Both were terribly wrong.

Give credit & blame equally to both parties.

Tanny was only put in that situation because Mangini handled it badly to begin with... but yes thinking Clarke would work was an epicly bad decision for both of them...

Mangini would make a great assistant HC IMO... thats about it though... someone who can keep track of all the details and such... but dont expect him to gameplan or anything well...

This was more on Tannenbaum than Mangini.

Regardless, hindsight is 20/20, and it would have been a big reach at the time. Cutler was a very raw prospect from a small school with an unimpressive W-L record. There was better value available to us at #4.

Weird he is still a raw QB with an unimpressive W-L record... lol

i think mangini's biggest mistake was not benching favre as soon as favre injured his shoulder near the end of last season. let favre rest and maybe clemens goes 2-3 instead of 1-4 and bretts back for the playoffs.

9-7 or 10-6, either record doesn't get us into the 2008 NFL Playoffs. New England missed them at 11-5.

true, i still stand by my point though. should've pulled brett after he became an interception catapult, no matter what he said it was obvious he was hurt.

Mangini thought the fallout would get him fired... whoops...

So after games 12 and 13 in the middle of a division race you bench a f**king HOF QB because he threw some int's...Right dude..CLUELESS

Mangini does suck.

I don't think he sucks, I just think he needed to grow up in the coaching world. I still think he is going to do well. It's his arrogance that sucks. You just can't implement a system if you don't have the people to do it. And that's what really screwed the jets up. And we had winning seasons with him F'ing with the system. Imagine if he had kept the 4-3. Who knows. He also had a personality issue. He was too calm it seemed. We have a guy with some fire, so lets hope the players pick up on it.

so if he broke his leg, still play him? obviously injury renders your "ZOMG YOU CANT BENCH A HOF QB!!!!!!!!!!!!!" infantile and simplistic argument into itty bitty matchsticks.

you bench him because he had a torn muscle. hope your backup can steal a few wins to get you to the dance and buy your HOF QB time to heal. when he got hurt we were 8-3 or 8-4 and appeared to be a near-lock for the playoffs, making it even more unfathomable that mangini didn't bench favre and give him time to heal.

Mangini's biggest mistake was in not hiring experienced coordinators rto help mentor him through the times of inevitable adversity. When the chips got down, Mangini would look to his left and see Baby Schottenheimer get eaten alive by any opposing DC with a brain, and he'd look to his right and see Bob Sutton scribbling down the latest draft of his resignation. Mangini had nowhere to go--no where--and it burned him in the end. He needed to hire experienced hands, and all he had were interns.

Passing on Cutler/Flacco, not trying to move up for Ryan..

The lack of a QB on this team is going to be an achilles heel for a long time, and that's if Rex Ryan can do what Lewis and Nolan before him couldn't, bring the dominant Baltimore Defense with him to his new home. If he can't do that, we are starting 4 wins in the face..

not going after Flacco was a big one for me also. I really wanted this guy. I was screaming the tv for us to take him.

Mangini was in over his head while with the Jets. He started off saying all the right things -- build the team the right way, etc. But when he started losing, he panicked. He gave up all the slow progress for spend big win now and in the end, he lost the team because he had different sets of rules for different players. He should do better in Cleveland (not necessarily win loss wise), but you have to remember that it takes time to go from waterboy to head coach. Woody, in a desire to glom on to New England success, just hired him before he was really ready to do the job.

He wants Cutler now after hes shown he can play in the NFL. Cutler is clearly better than anderson and quinn so why wouldnt he want him. We dont know if Mangini wanted Cutler at the draft or not...i know i did.
