Asian-descent voters should adopt names that are

While I don't condone forcing anyone to change their name to a more common English name, and at the risk of sounding racist (which I most certainly am NOT), this is really not a bad idea.

I work for a Japanese company. Several English-speaking Japanese coworkers recently received their visas and moved to San Jose to work at that location. One of the first things they did was to "change" their names to a more "American" form. For example:

Tsukasa "changed" his to Luke

Kenichi "changed" his to Ken

Kojiro "changed" his to Joe

Obviously it should be left up to the individual to make the decision for themselves, but I think this idea should be encouraged.

Read the article. They're talking about problems caused by the dual-name thing. Allegedly, anyway. If that were actually the concern the obvious solution wouldn't be to stop using the real names for official purposes, it would be to stop using the fake ones.

Only Romey is talking about the problems and cause. Brown is talking about making Asian names more accessible to our predominantly English-speaking country, which is addressing the thread title.

Brown was responding to Ramey. We're not talking quantum physics here.

Indeed...

A North Texas legislator during House testimony on voter identification legislation said Asian-descent voters should adopt names that are

Now read the whole article, and this time don't skip the part at the very beginning where Brown's own representative states flat out that she was attempting to 'overcome problems with identifying Asian names for voting purposes.' In order to do so, she suggests the above. This ignores that the problem is in part caused by the adoption for identification purposes of names that, while they are easier for you to deal with, don't match the ones on their bona fides. Once again, the solution is to use legal names for legal documents notwithstanding the fact that calling everybody Fred would make life easier for the stupid fatasses at the BMV.

I'll tell Xiaole that "Fred" has been taken.

Should blacks change their names to something that White America finds easier? I'm sure that an Erica would get excepted faster then a Tamika.

Don't put words into my mouth and then try to label me.

If it was reverse and we had to get a Chinese name, would you be serious and take Tao or something normal, or would you be smart ass and pick HopSing or something in that vein??

I didn't put words in your mouth. You're the one that said it's not a bad idea for Asians to change their names not me.

You're making an effort to drag me into an argument with your rhetoric and spin by trying to draw a parallel to a topic that isn't at issue. Your attempt failed.

It didn't fail at all. You said you think it's a good idea for Asian to change their names to fit into American society but now you're getting all defensive because I brought up black names. I was just wondering if you thought everyone should change their names or only cultures that are still ok to mock in this country. Start a thread about blacks names and have SJ post racist funny names about blacks and see how long the thread last.

That is a great comment. And so true. Today, blacks and gays are off limits. Asians, latins, southerners and elderly rich white men are open season.

Personally, I think everyone should be fair game to good natured humor. Of course, the racists use it for their own mean spirit-ness. But that is the price of free speach.
