Clay Matthews Jr at 17!

I'll punch someone in the face if we go defense at #17.

I'm all for the BPA concept, but LB has to be off the board for the Jets this year in the first round. Calvin Pace, Vernon Gholston, and Bart Scott tie up enough salary dollars. Along with David Harris, I have to think they have LB covered.

I attempted to crunch the #s on our LB corps and from what I could piece together it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal if we got another LB at 17 from a cost standpoint. They don't make as much as everyone thinks. Scott and Pace are the only truly heavy contracts. Vernon and BT are getting paid like mid range starters. Harris is getting chicken ****. With Barton out of the picture there is plenty of room.

Clay Matthews simply does not fit in a 34 scheme.

I disagree ... but I think you know that already. :D

He doesn't fit at OLB necessarily in a 3-4 scheme, but I think he's more than capable of playing inside at ILB in the scheme, particularly if he's being assigned coverage responsibilities and not being asked to penetrate and make plays behind the LOS.

I also think though undersized, he can still play WOLB, he's stout at the point of attack, and isn't a liability against the run.

He can't play SOLB ... I agree with that ... he's not a good enough pass rusher.

Two LB'ers who signed enormous contracts in the past 2 off-seasons? check.

A thumper who we drafted & who was good even in a read & react 3-4 defense with no NT? check.

A top-10 draft pass-rushing specialist who failed in an attempt to be a read & react LB, and a HC who thinks he can turn him into something? check.

Another former 1st round LB who was supposed to be a pass-rushing specialist also spending 3 yrs starting there in a read & react defense? check.

I would be damn surprised if we touched the LB position prior to round 5, if we touch it at all.
