Plenty of visitors

April 13, 2009

Before the draft, each team is allowed to visit with up to 30 players at their facility. Sometimes it means the team is really interested in a player; sometimes it means there's a medical issue that needs to be checked out; sometimes it means they weren't able to hook up with the player at the combine or a post-season event; sometimes it's just a smokescreen.

Sometimes the outcome can dramatically affect the team's decision on draft day. One example comes to mind, but I can't give too many details because the information was shared in confidence. Let's just say it happened when the Jets had a high pick. They were considering this player, but the player flunked a drug test on his visit to the Jets, who decided to go in another direction -- a decision that had a dramatic impact.

And, no, I'm not talking about Warren Sapp. This happened after Sapp in 1995. Anyway, here's a list of players who have visited the Jets, most of the names first reported by NewYorkJets.com:

Quarterbacks: Rhett Bomar (Sam Houston State), Nate Davis (Ball State), Matthew Stafford (Georgia), Mike Teel (Rutgers).

Running backs: Donald Brown (UConn), Knowshon Moreno (Georgia).

Wide receivers: Kenny Britt (Rutgers), Percy Harvin (Florida), Jeremy Maclin (Missouri), Louis Murphy (Florida), Hakeem Nicks (North Carolina).

Tight ends: Richard Quinn (North Carolina).

Offensive linemen: Will Beatty (UConn), Xavier Fulton (Illinois), Andre Smith (Alabama).

Defensive linemen: Sammie Lee Hill (Stillman), Peria Jerry (Ole Miss), B.J. Raji (Boston College), Darrell Scott (Clemson), Jamal Westerman (Rutgers).

Linebackers: Jonathan Casillas (Wisconsin), Brian Toal (Boston College).

Cornerback: Darius Butler (UConn), Vontae Davis (Illinois), Bradley Fletcher (Iowa), Malcolm Jenkins (Ohio State), Mike Mickens (Cincinnati), Greg Toler (St. Pauls, Va.).

Safety: David Bruton (Notre Dame)
