Steelers Keep Charlie Batch

Posted by Mike Florio on April 14, 2009, 6:42 p.m.

As expected, the Pittsburgh Steelers have moved quickly to bring back veteran backup Charlie Batch, given the departure of Byron Leftwich.

Per John Clayton of ESPN.com, Batch has signed a one-year, $895,000 contract, with a $50,000 signing bonus.

Batch, a third-round pick in 1998, spent four seasons with the Lions as the primary starter. He signed with the Steelers as a free agent in 2002, and has served chiefly as a backup to Tommy Maddox and, since 2004, Ben Roethlisberger.

He has appeared in 22 games for the Steelers, starting four. He spent all of the 2008 season in injured reserve after breaking a clavicle during the preseason.
