USC quarterback Mark Sanchez has passing fancy for Jets

From the 36th floor of a West Side hotel, Mark Sanchez could see everything from Central Park to the Hudson River. The former USC quarterback was impressed with the panoramic snapshot of New York, a place he wouldn't mind calling home.

"This," he told the Daily News Tuesday at a promotional event for Sprint phones, "would be a great fit."

Specifically, Sanchez was referring to the Jets, who have the most unsettled quarterback situation in the NFL and own the 17th pick in the April 25 draft. It's unlikely Sanchez will last until then, but if the Jets are convinced he's the real deal, they could trade up to grab him. The Jaguars (8th), 49ers (10th) and Redskins (13th) are potential landing spots for the talented, if not seasoned passer.

Sanchez believes he blew away Jets officials last month at a private workout at his high school in Mission Viejo, Calif. Owner Woody Johnson, GM Mike Tannenbaum and coach Rex Ryan, all attended, as they were in Southern California for the league meetings. They also dined with Sanchez at a nearby Mexican restaurant and tested his football acumen in a chalk-talk session at the team hotel.

"I think they were really impressed with everything that went on," said Sanchez, adding, "I threw it really well. I was spinning it all day. I knocked down all the throws. It was great." He also felt he dazzled them with his knowledge of a pro-style offense.

"As soon as I sat down with their team and their playbook, they were like, 'Wow, this kid has a natural feel for the game. He understands our offense very well,'" said Sanchez, adding that his agent has been talking "quite a bit" to the Jets.

The Jets are performing due diligence on the other two top quarterback prospects, Georgia's Matthew Stafford and Kansas State's Josh Freeman, who received the Sanchez treatment at a private workout in Manhattan, Kan. Stafford, who could wind up being picked first overall by the Lions, visited the Jets in Florham Park.

They should know more about their quarterback need at the conclusion of a three-day voluntary minicamp, which begins tomorrow. The leading candidates are Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff. Curiously, Erik Ainge has been skipping recent voluntary workouts, a league source confirmed, casting doubt on his status with the team.

NEW BEGINNING: The Rex Ryan era will begin in the same city, Houston, where his father, Buddy, infamously slugged fellow Oilers assistant Kevin Gilbride in the Jets' last game of the 1993 season. This time, the opponent will be the Texans.

"I'm fired up about the upcoming season," Ryan said Tuesday after the NFL released the complete schedule. "...The schedule is filled with challenges, but our coaching staff and players have been working hard and I know that we will be ready."

The schedule includes a Monday night game in Miami (Oct. 12) and a Thursday night contest in Toronto, where they will face the Bills (Dec. 3). The Jets will play the final regular-season game at Giants Stadium, Jan. 3 against the Bengals.

Ryan will have a difficult early stretch, starting with the home opener against the Patriots (Sept. 20). After that, the Jets play the Titans, Saints and Dolphins, the latter two on the road.

The bye week falls in Week 9.

I would love for him to be here. I was just saying in another post, that we would need to move up to at least the 8th spot to be sure to get him. The only bad thing is, if we use a first and a second to move up to grab him then who is he going to throw the ball to??? I would think we would then go after Torry Holt. I think this guy is for real though.

With our second round pick and 1st round we can get as high as number 10 in the first round according to the draft chart. That would be enough. Josh freeman btw.. will be there at 17 guaranteed.. I love these newspapers saying we would have to trade up to get one of the qbs..

That was my first take.

I hope they let the draft come to them. Players drop. Aaron Rogers was a candidate to go #1 overall and fell to the 20's. Junior QB's are huge risks. They really need to be in love and a half to trade up. And like you say, that'll leave 'em with very few weapons.

I also think Tanny and Rex have to be drafting for now. For Tanny, this is his second head coach. If this one doesn't work out, he's gone. If Gholston is a bust, and he follows it with a bust at QB that he traded up for, he's gone. And Rex has to know that if Tanny's ever fired, any new GM will come in looking to install his own guy. No, these guys are definitely thinking 2009 with this draft - and not much further.
