As much as I love TJ, I agree with the unknown GM.

NFL GM On Thomas Jones: “He’s Being Very Selfish”

Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 15, 2009, 8:13 p.m.

New York Jets running back Thomas Jones, who remains displeased with his contract in what has become an ongoing theme, isn’t expected to attend new coach Rex Ryan’s first minicamp Thursday, according to Dave Hutchinson of the Newark-Star Ledger and Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News.

It’s a voluntary minicamp, and the Jets’ mandatory session isn’t until June.

However, Jones’ actions apparently aren’t winning him many friends around the league.

Per Cimini, a general manager for another NFL team called out Jones.

“He’s being very selfish,” the anonymous GM told the Daily News. “It’s crap, what he’s doing.”

Jones led the AFC with 1,312 rushing yards last season, scoring 13 touchdowns.

He’s due a $900,000 base salary for next season and $2.8 million in 2010, and is scheduled to be paid a $3 million roster bonus before the 2010 season.

He signed a 4 year, $20 million extension in 2007.

If I were the Jets I'd be only mildly annoyed. The workout is voluntary, after last year's performance he's assured a starting spot, so it's no big deal. You'd like to see him show just to get off on the right foot, but they already know what he can do.

WTF is wrong with players? You just signed a ****ing contract, play and shut the **** up.

Not only did he just sign that contract 2 yrs ago, but that contract paid him $13M over those 2 years.

In the eyes of Thomas Jones:

Overpaid over those first 2 years is ok. Underpaid for year 3 - when he's going to be 31 years old - trumps that & warrants sitting out.

He - and his agent - knew the day he signed the contract that it was a 3-year/$14M contract with a club option for a 4th year at $6M.

You've said this before and it's bull****. If he and his agent knew it was 3years/$14M, then the Jets and their FO knew it was 2years/$13M. They knew if he did well he'd look for a bump this season before his down year, knowing he'll get cut or renegotiated. The length of the contract was there so that the Jets can pro rate the bonus.

I will continue to say it until it pierces that thick skull of yours.

Jones could get traded, I suppose if someone really wants to trade something for a 31 year-old RB who wants a new contract, but other than that he has no leverage & the Jets have all of it.

He can play this year for $900K and then get cut, or sit out half the year & surrender those game checks and then get cut.

So unless he gets traded, he's going to be a FA next year (at the latest) and turn 32 years old before the start of the 2010 season.

I don't give a **** what happens to Thomas Jones. I don't like him much as a player and I probably wouldn't have even made the deal for him in the first place. That doesn't change the fact that players and front offices both know that when a team has a ton of backloaded money and roster bonuses in a contract the player will be cut/renegotiated prior and that when there is a year with a miny salary the player will demand to extend/renegotiate or start causing trouble. You act like no player ever got what they wanted by pulling this ****. Does the name Pete Kendall ring a bell?

I'm not saying they should give him money or anything, I'm saying that it's a fact that they knew this was going to happen as well as he knows he's getting cut before his roster bonus is due. Now if that's a fact, tell me.... am I lying?

Stick to pointing to Junior Seau's footprint.

Difference is Kendall didn't get nearly the same deal Jones got & was the player rep. And even still, I was of the same mind back then that I am with Jones right now. The problem was the idiotic way that Tannenbaum made no effort to get a real replacement to keep himself in the driver's seat.

If - before Jones started his mini protest - the Jets wanted to move $1M from 2010 to 2009, I could have lived with that. I still don't like it on principle, but it wouldn't have been the end of the world. What I dislike much more is caving in later on after the player has his little rebellion. Do that & you're asking for it to happen far more than it does right now.

You are arguing with me for no reason. Not that I mind. I am not saying they should be paying off Thomas Jones. I am saying that Jones is simply playing the cards he is dealt. I'm pretty sure Jones would be happy if they moved $1M up. If they cut him, then he wins. I can agree about the bad precedent issue, but they did cave to Coles and Brandon Moore.

Even if he is not looking to be cut or moved, then not attending the voluntary program can simply be looked at as trying to make sure he doesn't get hurt slaving for the man. It's not like any of us are worried about Jones getting out of shape.

He signed the contract, he knew what he would make. If I was Mike Tannenbaum, I’d try to trade him for a 3rd or 4th rounder and get a young stud running back in the draft. Plenty of options in rounds 2-5.

We missed out on the year of the running back last year... it was a great year for running backs...

Slaton

Mcfadden

Chris Johnson

Felix Jones

stewart

Forte

now the best of this years draft is

1. Chris "Beanie" Wells*, Ohio State

2. Knowshon Moreno*, Georgia

3. Donald Brown*, Connecticut

4. LeSean McCoy*, Pittsburgh

5. Shonn Greene*, Iowa

6. Andre Brown, North Carolina State

7. Cedric Peerman, Virginia

8. Glen Coffee*, Alabama

9. Javon Ringer, Michigan State

10. Rashad Jennings, Liberty
