greekjetsfan128
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/ Jones & Ainge MIA April 16, 2009 Greetings from minicamp in Florham Park. A quick attendance check from the practice: RB Thomas Jones and QB Erik Ainge are nowhere to be seen. No surprise.
TampaBayJetsFan85
That just means more carries for Leon Washington and I'm all for that...He can actually turn this offense into an explosive offense and as long as we draft a RB like S.Greene in round two...We will still be set @ RB. I would love Thomas Jones here in 09, he just led the AFC in rushing yards but I feel that was because of our O-Line (Look @ his number in 2007 with NO O-Line) Maybe we could get a 4th round pick for Thomas Jones as a draft day trade. slats
Thomas Jones would be a fool to not show up once it's mandatory. He has no leverage. He's getting bad advice. The Jets could pick up a UFA after the draft to carry the ball 200 times for them this year, and that kid would do just fine behind this OL. The Jets would be wise to run Jones into the ground for their $900K this year, cut him, and draft his replacement next April. That's what I'd do. What the hell's up with Ainge, though? The Jets are going to have to get another QB. Will it be a top pick? A late pick? Some old dude off the scrap heap?

slats
absolutely Seth-you can already pencil a QB in with one of the 6 picks we got With Clemens and Ratliff as your top two QB's, it would seem to make little sense to bring someone in just to carry the clipboard. Unless they happen to love one of the later prospects, and think they're smarter than everyone else, I would think that if they go QB it will be in round one. Or they could finally pick up one of the vets off the scrap heap as some sort of insurance policy, test the waters with what they've got, and address the QB position again in next years draft (where they'll presumably be drafting higher if the QB experiments are failures). 124
God I'd HATE to see one of our few picks wasted on a late round QB Jimmy. Why? The Jets don't have any huge needs besides a WR and blocking TE. We can easily use our 6th or 7th on a QB prospect like Nate Davis (who we've had in) or someone from the smaller schools.
ECURB
Erik Ainge is a moron. He will be gone after the Jets draft a QB. I am pretty sure it was not his choice... just a hunch... More like a... you tested positive for roids... your arm sucks... you kind of suck... go sign with the Browns if you want... see ya... from the JETS... Borgoguy
Erik Ainge is a moron. He will be gone after the Jets draft a QB. He's actually smart. He realizes he has no shot here and wants to be either traded or released. His agent is orchestrating this move.

Then his agent is a bigger idiot than he is. A 5th rounder who has shown absolutely nothing, is no where close to beating out the likes of Clemens and Rat, was suspended for roids in his first season, and then doesn't come to camp and try to force a trade or release? Yea I can see teams lining up around the corner for his services.

A lot of players haven't juiced up. Has any of our other draft picks from 2008 tested positive? If he has to take steriods to make a difference, than I don't want him on the team anyway. NFLs StepChild
I like your world view. I am far too jaded for it myself. But I like it. To me they all do it. Some get caught. Some guys are natural. Many aren't. I don't really care one way or the other. Not my body on the line. You wanna ruin yours for money and career? Go nuts. Won't be the only job in the world where you trade health for dollars. And there is a ton of cash to be had. Just get the Jets a trophy.

You would think that if most players were juicing , there would multiple suspensions every week. I don't know - maybe you're right, and if so that is very sad state of affairs. One player that always comes to my mind with this is Dexter Manley. He was one of my favorite non-jet players until multiple violations got him thrown out of the league. NFLs StepChild
I can't think of anyone recently who has been kicked out of the NFL for roids. Suspended? Sure. But you gotta suspend some people to show you are policing the issue. I think it's all windowdressing. Like anything else, if the NFL really wanted to eliminate steroids, they could very, very easily. It's not in their interest as far as the product goes and rehabbing players goes, and it would cost lots more money to do it the right way than it would to "randomly" show up "select" 3 people and call it a day. NFLs StepChild
Not suggesting they are outright selecting who to suspend. Don't think there is that much thought and effort placed into the program. How long was he out for anyway? 4 games? Big deal. In the grand scheme of things they can suspend anyone and it wont matter. But the system can be gotten around easily is all I am saying. And they look like they are doing something about it so it's fine imo.

One player that always comes to my mind with this is Dexter Manley. He was one of my favorite non-jet players until multiple violations got him thrown out of the league. Key word: Supposedly. Ainge and most of the other guys did NOT test positive for steroids. They tested positive for a diuretic that is used as a masking agent. Most of them used Starcaps. Ainge supposedly (there's that word again!) used something his sister gave him. There are ways to avoid testing positive and there is enough money involved that the players are usually pretty good at staying on top of it. Like the WWE, I don't believe the NFL actually wants to stop the juicing. They just want to keep up appearances. THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
kelticwizard
I suppose they could throw you out of the league first time for testing positive for steroids, harsh as that might seem. But throwing you out permananently for testing positive for diuretics would seem to violate most people's idea of fairness. They are prescribed by doctors for such a wide variety of conditions that it is a virtual certainty somebody unknowingly will take them.

They are prescribed by doctors for such a wide variety of conditions that it is a virtual certainty somebody unknowingly will take them. I don't doubt that the percentage of that is ridiculously low. Perhaps I'm jaded, but I find it really hard to believe that an athlete, whose body is his temple, his life-line, his cash cow, AND his career would put something into his body without fully knowing what it was (or the reasons for taking it) - or, 'unknowingly take them', as you said. Semantics? Not really. Things are down to such a science now that if athletes also take something to mask something else and pretend otherwise, it stands to reason they knew what they were trying to mask in the first place. Not that you were saying this ==> but I just don't buy the 'accident' argument as a pervasive thing on a large scale. 'Bigger, Stronger, Faster - The Side Effects of Being American' - my cousin's documentary on steroid use in sports. It's very honest and thought provoking. I couldn't get the official trailer to embed, so I had to youtube it. There are also a whole slew of other youtubes out there. D8nOKJTL6Tg EDIT: Oh, well, I guess we should get back to Thomas Jones. I will later, because it's beautiful outside. Time to go swinging on vines through the woods - all without being 'roided up.
