Home Security?

Recommended Posts

Hey Hey Hey

I'm closing on a house soon and am wondering if folks can recommend any home security systems? If you've had bad experiences with certain companies, I'd love to hear about thise as well. Lastly, if people in law enforcement have any suggestions/tips, those are very welcome.

It's a working class neighbor-hood in Arlington, VA. Not bad crime stats, but urban enough that I want some peace of mind.

Thanks much!

I think a Picture of "Fear the Cat Butt"... on your front door

will scare off any forced entries (no pun intended)

Alarms Are Useless. By the time the alarm company gets the alarm, calls us, and we dispatch a car to check it, you could move a Panzer division through the house.

The original Homeland Security. I love the folding stock and the tubular extention. Nothing like the sound of a pump !shotgun !!

Verde you have to hook me up with your breeder!!! i would love to own one and could give a dobe a great home i just cant afford to buy one.. i need to find a place like the one yu get your dogs from

My dog comes from Niklby..

http://www.niklbydobermans.com/

If I were you, I would get a young adult that needs to be re-homed.. reputable breeders often need to rehome dogs (of all ages) that, for any number of reasons, didn't work out in their prior home.

This was the case with my dog.. her owner passed away. So we inherited (free) a fabulous beautiful champion and didn't have to deal with raising a destructive untrained puppy. Cinny (aka CH Niklby's Flaming Arrow) is the best dog I've ever owned.

LOL, this is what I get for being such a consistent knucklehead here!

For serious, any ideas, lol?

Seriously dogs ARE a great alarm system and any bugular will by pass a house with a dog for a home that's easier prey. I know I did.

I know I know

Cinny would have Riley as an afternoon snack:D

Riley is cute and looks very tasty. lol.

Actually, Cinny is a marshmellow.. she just looks like a demon. For the record, the dog I posted is not my dog, it's her grandpa, "Basteque".

Yeah, I will be getting a hand gun. Any recommendations? Also, do you think the alarm is a deterrent at all, or just an overall waste of funds?

That gun is sweeeeeeeeet.

I know, I had a dobey growing up. But I know the guy in my avatar would have a heart attack if I brought a big dog home. He's 16, has diabetes, and once ran in terror from a bottle of mustard!

Ooops I forgot about the cats. I have 2 cats thus NO DOG. I've got the pump shotgun instead along with phoney alarm signs on the windows and doors. I also made sure the nosey neighbor 2 doors down knew I had an "alarm" system . Suer enough I heard about it from a guy I know on the other side of the village. ;)

2 pitbulls and a Mossberg 500 pistol grip shotgun is all the home security you need

That's my system.

I live in downtown philly, i have a german shepherd that is the most vicious animal I have ever seen, the aforementioned shotgun loaded with birdshot in my closet, an alarm system (slomin's shield) and bars on every ground floor window. Come and get me bitches. :)

I had a Slomin's system installed when I built my house 5 years ago and I love it. Never had the system or any of its components fail on me, and there are a lot of options you can choose to use or not use. The monitoring is fantastic, and their customer service extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

Regarding hand gun protection, there's no need to go big. A brand new .22 caliber Walther or Beretta autoloader can be had for ~$300.00.

We had an alarm system on our last place, a 3-floor townhouse in MA. But we never turned it on, since it covered the 1st and 3rd floors. The previous owner said he turned it on when he went to sleep. But we're up late and couldn't go to the kitchen, living room, or computer room without setting it off. We did have the security signs on our doors, though.

Our neighborhood is trying to set up a Neighborhood Watch, since there have been a couple of break-ins and other scary incidents. Most people blame it on the economy. Anyway, we found out that we can put up any NWatch signs or security signs we want, without having an official NWatch or official approval from the city. So you could order signs online and put them out on your own, even if you don't get a system.

The NWatch police liaison here said that signs do deter some criminals (maybe the lazy ones :)) if they think they can find easier pickings somewhere else. This might be because we're in a residential neighborhood, not an urban area.

Of course, this is Texas and guns are common. So that's also an alternative.

One of my favorites:

So many choices. Depends on what you're looking for in a gun.

If you're looking for something for a concealed carry, you'll want to keep it relatively small and lightweight. I have a Glock 27 which packs a punch, but come summer time, is a little too big to tuck into the shorts. During the winter I wear it on my ankle. Believe it or not, a nice feather weight .357 revolver still does the trick. Don't go any smaller that a .380 though and if you can, stick with a single-stack...it's thinner and can tuck in a belt easier.

If you're looking for a full size and/or hand cannon, I'm an owner and huge fan of the HK USP .40 cal. I love my HK and wouldn't trade it for anything. I have a Glock 22 at work which I don't mind and I shoot very well with it. A good gun indeen. SigSauer's are good as well. Stay away from Beretta, Walther, Smith & Wesson and some others in the automatic department.

As for alarms, they're not total wastes per se, just depends on what you do with it. I'm a fan of the audible alarm that lets everyone in a mile radius know when it goes off. Silent alarms that go to the alarm company, and then from there to police dispatch center, and then from there to the cars, typically get the officer there just in time to call the alarm company back and say, "Yep the house got broken into".

Alarms are good if they're audible.

Oh come on, it's not like you have anything else down there.

i agree with most a gun is my way of home defense. the remington 870 is always on alert she never sleeps. here in nj its a pain in the ass to get a handgun permit so i stick with the shotgun, but if its easy down there might as well go ahead.
