Kellen Wins First Practice(According To Cimini)

Based on the first practice, Kellen Clemens gets a slight edge over Brett Ratliff in the quarterback competition. Clemens didn't light it up, but he also didn't make any glaring mistakes. Ratliff, under pressure from a safety blitz, threw a wobbly sideline pass that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown by CB Tyron Brackenridge. It was an ugly play that showed his inexperience.

(Disclaimer: These are non-contact practices. Let's not get too crazy over these early sessions. I'll provide stats and details, but let's keep it in the proper perspective, please.)

In full-team drills, Clemens completed 3 of 4 passes for 16 yards. He worked with the first-team offense, facing primarily the first-team defense. Ratliff completed 2 of 4 for 43 yards, with the interception. He played with, and against, the backups.

In 7-on-7, Clemens: 5-for-8, 49 yards, Ratliff 6-for-12, 60 yards. (Note: Yardage totals are estimates.)

A medical update: DE Shaun Ellis (minor knee surgery), RG Brandon Moore (sports-hernia surgery) and TE Dustin Keller (flu-like symptoms) sat out the practice.

DL Kareem Brown (6-4, 295) is working at tight end. For a big man, he doesn't move that badly. He dropped a couple of balls, but that's to be expected.

"The routes look good," O.C. Brian Schottenheimer yelled to him. "We'll get the catching part down."

The Jets are woefully thin at tight end. Brandon Pettigrew of Oklahoma State, anyone? He's a possibility with the 17th pick.

During a special teams session, LB Vernon Gholston was chided by STC Mike Westhoff for pulling up before crashing into a blocking pad during a wedge-busting drill. (Yeah, I know, wedges aren't allowed anymore, but they had three tacklers running into three blockers, so we'll call it a wedge in this blog.) Anyway, the point is, Gholston isn't doing much to change the perception of him. But, hey, it's way early, so let's let it ride before we rip the guy.

At least three minicamp practices.

That's a joke.

Ryan is wonderfully candid. Two instances: He said he didn't know where to stand at the start of practice, so he jumped in with the defensive linemen (old habits die hard) and started running a drill. He also said that, while sitting in an offensive meeting yesterday, he was thinking to himself how out of place he felt.

He also said he wasn't going to discuss injuries. That, too, was a joke.

Take that, Man-genius.

I'll check in later with the afternoon practice report.

Kellen easily won if you look at the stats and the fact that he was working with the 1st team.

He is already fitting into the Rex Ryan QB: Someone who won't make mistakes and can manage the team to 10-12 wins a season, possibly more.

First of many wins for Kellen this season.

Really? Clemens averaged a little over 5 yds per catch on his 3 completions. Ratliff averaged over 20 yds per catch on his 2 completions. Yeah, the pick and 1st team give the edge to Clemens, but "easily won"? LOL

Clemens had too much time learning under Chad... he is a check down machine... Ratliff looks downfield first...

I think it's obvious that Kellen will enter the 2009 regualr season as our starting QB...Look @ the #'s that Thomas Jones put up in 2007 with No O-Line, he had like what? 1 freaking TD? Then look @ the numbers Jones put up last year with the additions of Faneca over Montgomery as our LG and Woody as our RT over Clement...The man scored TD after TD while rushing for the most yards in the AFC...

Like I've been saying since 2007...Kellen was THROWN into the fire as a rookie starter and 2nd year player behind a HORRID O-Line and no rushing attack what so ever because of our "O-Line" And the thing is...He still found ways to win some games for the Jets and he showed alot of talent, potential and promise behind that O-Line.

I would love 2 see Kellen as a starter because this will be his 4th year in the leauge behind a solid O-Line and tough running game with a Defense that can lead us far. Lets not forget that Ferguson and Mangold will both be 4 year starters here in 09 instead of 2nd year players who were still learning on the fly in 07.

Give Kellen an O-Line, a running game, a defense and a full offseason to gain chemestry with the starters before anyone else gets a chance because Kellen has earned the role of a starter in my eyes and has been nothing but a class act while LEARNING the game of football behind Favre and Pennington.

Kellen deserves a shot here in 09...A fair chance because he had NO CHANCE in hell 2 win in 07.

On his first practice as a head coach: "All my life I've been an assistant coach and the first day I had no idea where to stand. I always felt chained to a chair (as a defensive coach/coordinator). As a head coach, you have to be everywhere."

On his defense: "This is a smart group. We're way ahead."

On RB Thomas Jones and QB Erik Ainge being no-shows: "I think with Thomas, you have to talk to him. ... He said Ainge has "personal'' issues he's dealing with."

On his quarterbacks: "Obviously, it's great to see (them) up close. But there's a lot of tape out there. Like I said, we have confidence in both of those guys (Kellen Clemens and Erik Ainge). We feel good about our quarterback situation."

On WR David Clowney: "He was impressive today. Everybody knows about the great speed. I like his confidence. He loves to compete. He runs good routes. I'm excited about him."

On WR Brad Smith: "Brad Smith is one of the scariest athletes in the league. Not just on gadget plays. We (the Ravens) surely knew where he was on every play. He has to step up. This guy has all the talent in the world."

On moving training camp: "The facilities here are outstanding. (But) I've had a vision for this football team, any football team I ever coaches. ... It's about getting away from the comforts (of home) and putting guys in a camp situation and all they have is each other. I see it as a huge plus."

Rex's appeal: funJust came out of Rex Ryan's post-practice press conference and I'll have a report on that in a bit, meaning after I write it.

But first, a couple of quick things. First, Ryan wasn't pleased with one element of the practice, a spirited, full-go affair (with no contact).

"The one thing I told them, the only negative thing I saw out there is we had fun, but we need to have more fun out there," Ryan said. "Guys flying around out there and just enjoying the competition with each other. I told those guys I expect that this afternoon."

He continued along those lines regarding that perspective.

"We have to believe in each other," Ryan said. "This is a good football team so we expect to win and I think our tempo in practice and all that should be reflective of that. If we walk around...I know maybe it's sometimes, 'Don't say anything, let our pads do our talking.' Yeah, we're going to let our pads do our talking, you'll see, and those opponents will see. But we want to have fun and we want to be ourselves. If a young man likes to go out there and talk and express himself that way, then so be it. Generally those are the guys that have to back it up, so it's a lot of fun to see. We have to have that, we have to loosen up."

* As expected, Thomas Jones and Erik Ainge were not here.

"In Erik's case it's a personal issue and that's where it is," Ryan said. "I think with Thomas, you're probably better off talking with him. This is a voluntary camp and he's volunteering not to show up. You'll have to find out through him why he's not here."

Which, of course, is the desire to have his contract redone.

"Again, I'm focused on the people that are here," Ryan said. "This football team out here is where my focus is."

Asked about Ainge later, Ryan said, "This is just a personal issue that he's dealing with. No big deal. You'll have to talk to Erik about what his situation is."

* Ryan also explained his decision to move training camp.

"When I came here, first off, the facilities here are outstanding," Ryan said. "My thing...I've had a vision for any team I was going to be head coach of, I like having training camp away from your facilities. The reason I want to do this - and it has nothing to do with our facilities or getting our of Florham Park; I love it here' these facilities are better than anybody's in the league - but it's about getting away. Getting away from the comfort of this place, of these surrounding areas where their homes are and all that, and putting them in a camp situation where all they got is each other, there's nothing else. We're just going to be together and I think we're trying to build the chemistry of our football team in training camp, I think that's the No. 1 thing. And I see it as a huge plus for us."

And with that, time to throw the practice report together.

Get used to it. Kellen is the better QB IMO. Very good to see him playing well WITHOUT Keller on offense. As 124 pointed out he's doing exactly what Ryan wants - Not turning the ball over and being efficient with the offense. Refreshing to hear after last seasons struggles.

To be fair to Ratliff though, it's expected that a QB would be rusty at this point. It may take him a little more time to get going.

It's one practice, but no one should be surprised by it. Ratliff has yet to show us that he can do anything successfully outside of hitting wide open receivers 40 yards down field. Certainly, this is an important skill to have, but unfortunately, it does not make you a real QB.
