Alk
Un-freakin'-believable. Gotta love Mondays when you walk in the door and your schedule is all laid out for the day and one jacka$$ who is getting paid more than he's worth decides he's just not going to come to work. Completely screwing over the schedule for the entire week before the week even begins. It would be one thing if this was the first time but you can pretty much count on this guy not being here at least two Mondays out of the month. Whetever happened to responsible people? I would never even consider going out on a Sunday night and getting completely plowed knowing that I would have to work the next day. Okay, end rant. I feel a little better now. Garb
This is a bit off topic, but last week I was watching a segment on HBO's Real Sports. I guess there is a new physical education curriculum being implemented in school districts throughout the country. This new curriculum is anti "hostility." This mean no more dodge ball. No more kick ball. No more picking teams. No more losers no more winners. Everyone is a winner! Shoot - they are promoting jump rope - without the rope! You see, the rope could cause them to screw up - which in turn would make them feel bad. Can't have that! Nope, preparing your children for the disappointment they are sure to encounter in their lives is a bad thing. You win just for partcipating. Lets get rid of competition. Lets just coddle half-asses efforts and then reward them! Yah, that should work.

I do understand, and agree with dodgeball, but the rest of it is tremendously stupid. Not just for the 'pussification', as some people say, but because eliminating competition is counter intuitive to a real education. In the real world, you can get by without competing, but if you want to amount to anything, you need to stand out and above the average. Teaching people not to compete is hurting them long term. I think kids should be physical, play sports, and compete, I just don't think a game where the objective is basically to hit people in the face with a rubber ball is that necessary in school. Maybe with those nerf soccer balls, but the rubber ones, I've seen kids face-plant based on getting their legs taken out from under them, and I've seen kids get drilled in the face pretty good too. I went to a Christian Brothers high school. We had this maniacal gym teacher, who was also the basketball coach. We didn't play dodgeball, he called it "war ball", which was played using hard volleyballs. You cannot image the madness and carnage. If we didn't have at least one bloody nose per class, he wasn't happy. Plus, if you cut more than a few gym classes, he would make the cutter sit on the bleachers and instruct the rest of the class--20 or 25 guys--to get volleyballs and pummel the poor sap at will. Just completely insane.

It may sound awful, but when you think about it, in the real world, you're going to fail, quite a bit. Not every girl you like is going to be interested, not every job you want are you going to get, and so on and so forth. The last thing I want is my kid's first dealings is when he's in the real world. I've seen people like that, they usually end up scared, alone, and unable to function. My kid always winning in sports is all but useless. He or she has no future in sports barring me marrying one of the Williams sisters, the DNA just isn't there, sorry kid. However, having him learn how to take his lumps and keep playing is invaluable.

Let them get smacked with a rubber ball. They'll learn that it hurts and they will learn to get out of the way. Plus its great to watch snot-nosed kids crying because they got smacked with a ball. Knocks them down a peg.

My neighborhood was an insane place with lots of tough older kids teasing and menacing the younger ones. I got lucky that I was born with athletic ability and could out field and throw kids five years older than me. Playing on teams with the older kids saved me from many an a$$ beating. I've tried to impart this mentality on my son--to go out and try even if you fail--but it's difficult. Children are so coddled in schools that they don't believe they can fail.
