Our Half-Mock Draft, Take 1

April 21, 2009

Let's call this a half-mock, version 1.0. We'll stop at the Jets (No. 17), leaving the rest to your imagination. And to quote Bill Parcells, I reserve the right to change my mind.

1. Detroit -- QB Matthew Stafford, Georgia

Comment: Some scouts aren't convinced he's the real deal. For $40 mil in guarantees (guessing), he'd better be.

2. St. Louis -- OT Jason Smith, Baylor

Comment: Spags gets a replacement for Orlando Pace.

3. Kansas City -- DE Tyson Jackson, LSU

Comment: Everyone has LB Aaron Curry going here, but there's no way Pioli picks a linebacker who doesn't rush the passer.

4. Seattle -- WR Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech

Comment: Sorry, I'm not buying all the chatter about QB Mark Sanchez in this spot.

5. Cleveland -- CB Michael Jenkins, Ohio State

Comment: Mangini likes corners and he likes guys from Ohio State (see Vernon Gholston and Anthony Schlegel).

6. Cincinnati -- LT Eugene Monroe, Virginia

Comment: Much-needed protection for Carson Palmer.

7. Oakland -- WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maryland

Comment: Speed, speed, speed. It rocks Al Davis' world.

8. Washington (trade with Jacksonville) -- QB Mark Sanchez, USC

Comment: Danny Boy is desperate to replace Jason Campbell.

9. Green Bay -- DT B.J. Raji, BC

Comment: A giant man to plug a giant hole.

10. San Francisco -- LB Aaron Curry, Wake Forest

Comment: The Niners are elated. They can't believe Curry lasted this long.

11. Buffalo -- OT Andre Smith, Alabama

Comment: A replacement for Jason Peters.

12. Denver -- LB/DE Brian Orakpo, Texas

Comment: Josh (Doogie Howser) McDaniels can live with Kyle Orton at QB. He needs help on defense.

13. Jacksonville (trade with Washington) -- WR Jeremy Maclin, Missouri

Comment: There's booing in the Jets' war room. They really wanted Maclin.

14. New Orleans -- RB Knowshon Moreno, Georgia

Comment: A replacement for Deuce McAllister.

15. Houston -- LB Brian Cushing, USC

Comment: They need defense. Don't we say that every year?

16. San Diego -- OLB Connor Barwin, Cincinnati

Comment: Shawne Merriman insurance.

17. Jets -- TE Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma State

Comment: He fills a need, but I can see the Jets trading down a few spots, then making a bid for Cards WR Anquan Boldin or settling for North Carolina WR Hakeem Nicks.

I wouldn't mind trading up for Sanchez, why because it shows we are serious about winning. Sanchez is a winner. I think he could do well. But, is the cost too much. Depends. If he's a bust it is. If we go all the way or deep into the playoffs ala flaco then no.

Don't trade up for Freeman. He is dropping from what I hear.

Trading down and picking up extra picks and then trading for Boldin. I'm torn. Bolding has had some serious injuries. Remember concusions shortend Waynes career.

I repeat. We are not taking a te in the first round. Unless they officialy move Keller to WR.

He has Heyward-Bey going #7.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

Pathetic. Throwing darts on a draft board would have made more sense.

Not to defend Cimini, but I've seen that in other mocks, too. Al Davis is two things: unconventional, and a lover of speed. It's not the wildest guess on there.

Cimini is an ass clown.

The thing is, if the Jets draft Moreno (I hope they do), I don't think they have to get rid of Jones. It's crazy that the Jets have only 2 RBs on the roster last year. The Jets need 3. The power running teams all have 3.

Oh, and blocking TE is not a need. It's a luxury.

The Jets have 22 starters on the roster.

The blocking TE is a backup. Teams don't spend a 1st rounder on a player who is a backup.

Also, Cimini shows himself to be an idiot by claiming that Pettigrew would step in Day 1 and be a "terrific blocking tight end." Pettrigrew is considered an average blocker. Just read the scouting reports.

#1 ~

I totally agree in trying to deal Jones for a 4th or 5th round pick and taking Moreno at 17. If we do that we're set with our RB tandem (as long as we resign Washington) for AT LEAST the next 5, 6 yearas.

#2 ~

I find it interesting that the Jets don't think Boldin is worth the 17th overall pick, when most media reports have his price as a 1st and 3rd round pick. So how the heck could the Jets trade back a handfull of spots and get Boldin only for a 20th something overall selection? Not going to happen.

#3 ~

No Freeman? Thank god. I liked him at first, but when people keep saying he will need 2 years on the bench, no thanks. We need a guy who can step in now.

What happened with St. Kellen ? :P

this begs the question, why did we ever let baker walk away, to the pats no less. Baker was young, had great hands, and was a very good blocker, and we let him off the hook! and now we are contemplating wasting our first pick on pettigrew, tack on another one to that fabled jets draft blunders video.

Because he was our 2nd TE, as will whoever we draft, to Keller, and he was making $3+ million.

He tripped over the 20 yard line with the chance to catch an open-wide pass in a crucial early game (maybe the Pats week 2, 2008). Baker was not going to be kept at any high salary close to what he thinks he's worth, at least with the Jets front office. I think we should either draft Pettigrew after having drafted at #17 if his still on the board right before the Falcons choose or seeing what if any FA is out there, or Cuts.

If our first round pick ends up somehow netting us Anquan Boldin in a trade, or Knowshon Moreno, then we done did good.

If we take Pettigrew, then I'll be stunned. YES, we need a blocking TE, but we can get a blocker later on. I promise. Not that Pettigrew isn't good, mind you...

We just CAN'T take a TE in the 1st round 2 years in a row !!! Can we ? Please say no.

for any one player you can come up with one blunder in his career, but you are forgetting a lot of great and clutch catches baker has made for us. the jets called his bluff by not caving into his demands last year and could have resigned him for a fair price, you gotta understand where he was coming from bein paid less than both bubba franks and keller, he deserved to by the highest paid TE after the numbers he had in 2007, albeit not at an excessive price.

its been said before on this topic and ill say it again, run blocking TEs are a dime a dozen, if we are bringing in pettigrew just to hit people then why not do what belicheck did and put a 6th OL out there at the TE spot on running plays or simply draft a run blocking TE in later rounds. Pettigrew = Low Impact Move

Baker turns 30 this season (hardly "young" by NFL standards) and does not have great hands. He also runs like he's always in 4 feet of water & the only time he gets open is when no one decides to cover him. His blocking is merely adequate, not "very good" no matter how many times it gets repeated. He's 6'3" tall, which should make him an adequate goal-line target yet he has a measly 12 TD's in 7 NFL seasons (not to mention a pathetic 1500 yards over those 7 years). The Jets have had their share of goal-line downs in that time & it's not like he's been competing for goal-line catches with a bunch of touchdown-maker WR's & TE's on the Jets.

He's mediocre. That it's the Patriots who signed him doesn't mean otherwise, as they've had their share of dumb FA signings (not to mention awful draft picks) like every other team. NE is satisfied with mediocre because the two they have left are a bust from the 2006 draft and an always-hurt faggot who can't block at all (and both of whom are free agents in 2010).

Belichick wants him because by now he realizes he sucks at drafting TE's himself. Two first rounders, a 3rd rounder, a 4th rounder, a 5th rounder, a 6th rounder, and a 7th rounder since he was named HC. And they're still seeking out the likes of Chris Baker.

If they draft Pettigrew it's because they feel he's a legitimate receiving threat. If all they wanted was a pure blocking TE, they could have signed (and still could sign) a number of guys with NFL experience.

+1.

Slow. Merely adequate blocker. Minimal production. Always thinks he deserves more money. Getting older with a bad back - he claimed he might need surgery, but acted like he was toughing it out to take one for the team. People complain about Coles, but this guy is the ***** that got on my nerves.

The Pats? All their FAs are gold. They signed Hobson. We were supposed to be upset about that too, especially since Gholston blows.
