Marvin Harrison to the Jets?

The info on ESPN is pulled from Hutchinson's article, in which he speculates that Harrison may be a target:

New York Jets are high on WRs David Clowney and Brad Smith

It's getting difficult to decipher fact from fiction when talking to Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum these days. Let me try to figure it out.

Tannenbaum, whom I respect and like very much personally, has been talking out of both sides of his mouth recently, and I don't know what to believe. I understand that Tannenbaum didn't want to tip his hand leading up to the draft. But perhaps he could have side-stepped the questions instead of telling the media -- and fans -- outright falsehoods about his contentment with the Jets' situation at quarterback and running back only to trade up and draft a quarterback and running back?

Turns out, the Jets targeted quarterback Mark Sanchez from Day One and running back Shonn Greene was the top running back on their board.

Well, I'm hearing that Tannenbaum was at least telling the truth when he said the organization is excited about wide receivers David Clowney and Brad Smith and that's why the team didn't draft or trade for a wide receiver.

My sources are telling me that the Jets are going to give Clowney and Smith every opportunity to succeed -- and then some. The organization really feels that either or both have the ability to be big-time players.

The plan, I'm told, is that if neither steps up during the offseason program and the mandatory June minicamp, the Jets will then -- and not before -- seriously consider trading for a veteran wide receiver or signing a veteran off the street (Marvin Harrison, perhaps).

The player I think the Jets will go for if Clowney and/or Smith don't step up is Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards. I mean, if Browns coach Eric Mangini all but gave the Jets the fifth pick in the draft (Sanchez) for a song and dance (first- and second-round picks and QB Brett Ratliff, DE Kenyon Coleman and S Abram Elam), he'll probably give up Edwards for a year's worth of metro cards.

The bottom line is that the ball is in Clowney and Smith's court, and it's up to them to take advantage of their opportunity.

There has to be someone better that might not go to jail out there. Harrison's been done for years.

ANd worse yet, we may delude ourselves into thinking he's resolved the problem at WR..

Get BE!!!

They were also high on KC and Rat.

Apparently not. I'm pretty sure that was just a massive smokescreen that everybody saw through, but now people use to downgrade the value of their opinion of Clowney and Smith. Both are incredibly talented physically and are no longer first or second year players, so I wouldn't be surprised to see one or the other take a big step forward this year. And if not, Dez Bryant in 2010!

Yes, because if he sidestepped questions about his QBs, surely nobody would have deduced that the Jets were very interested in drafting a QB.

After all, we are all morons.

Maybe Tanny just give out hand jobs to all the media instead of answering there questions.

Lol, didn't work anyway. Jets Babe posted a rumor here a week prior to the draft about the Jets <3's Shanchez

What you have to keep in mind about the whole armchair punditry thing is that you and I have basically been trained to do it. Assessing limited information sometimes based on as little as the manner in which is presented isn't second nature for everybody. Hutchinson is just lancemehl with marginally better syntax.

The Jets might be high on Clowney. There is no way they are high on Brad Smith as a receiver. He can do many things. Being open and catching the ball are two that are not on the list.

Great post. I'm not high at all on Brad Smith. I think the experiment has run its course and it's time to add a REAL WR.

+1

Being a slow WR who can't catch is like being a prostitute who can't have sex.

Not that that's an important part of being a receiver or anything.

well, most wrs do need 2-3 years to get the hang of it, and with so many people saying he is such a gifted athlete you have to think there is something there. If clowney pans out as a real burner and true threat, then with cotch at 2 on a team that is defensive and run minded maybe smith turns out to be servicable as a 3. Plus the guy was generally always set up to fail being used for trick and gadget plays.
