Herm's ONLY redeeming quality as a HC was his rah rah speeches. That's it. he was terrible at game management, he was terrible at football strategy, he was terrible on defensive strategy, he was terriblre on offensive strategy, he was terrible at everything except sounding like an idiot. Rex is definitely a guy who talks alot to the media (albeit in a coherant manner vs DuhHerm), but he is undoubtedly a man with a strong football background and pedigree and a very storng history as a DC. He's also a guy who will put a player/team in place when needed. He's really the combination of Herm's one strong point and Mangini's couple of strong points. He also brings more of his own talent to the table than Mangini and Herm combined. The only thing we are waiting to see are what his weaknesses are, which likely won't be exposed until the games are played. We need to see how he handles adversity.

Rex spews more crap than Herm ever did and Rex has never been an HC.

Discuss..............

Rex has been a successful co-ordinator and has run a top D. He also did it under different head coaches. Herm was a good interview. Herm also came to the team and gutted one of our strongest units (DBs) and switched to a system that was the polar opposite of the one being run. Rex came in and kept the main pieces in place and added more.

I'll play since Ars is too afraid to...or maybe he's too busy reading those intellectually superior comic books he's so fond of?

Anyway, what is the diff?

1) One has a beer belly and one does not.

2) One is black and one is white

Herman Edwards was never a Defensive Coordinator before becoming a Head Coach. Before becoming the Head Coach of the Jets he was a Defensive Backs Coach for 9 years with the Chiefs and Buccaneers, but never a Coordinator.

Rex Ryan was a Defensive Coordinator for four seasons whose defenses were no worse than 6th in the NFL during his time as the Defensive Coordinator. He also comes from a coaching rich family.

Really, there are a lot of differences.

The only similarity is that they are both loud mouths when it comes to talking to the media.

Talking is overrated. However to compare him to Herm is laughable at best. The reason many fans are excited about Ryan has little to do with his outspoken nature and a lot to do with the agressive nature he will bring (especially on the defense). Since 2001 (the year Herm took over), the Jets have only had one year where the defense actually had an agressive natured defense that actually played to the personnnel (2004). Outside of that, the coaches have tried to fit square pegs into round holes regarding the personnel (2001-2003, 2006-2007) or had a poor spineless game plan (2005 & 2008).

You Pats* fans can hope that Ryan=Herm all you want, but Tommy Boy will no longer be able to sit in the pocket unharassed.

EDIT: In speaking about 2004, I only speak of the defense. As evidenced by the Pittsburgh game, 2004 still had spineless offensive game planning.

Well, as they say...ask a stupid question...get a stupid answer.

Pointless thread/non-arguement.

What is the difference between Herm & Rex? Please let me know.

I guess the answer of 'one's a proven successful defensive coordinator over a number of years while the other was nothing more than a defensive backs coach', wasn't good enough for you?

When they were tag teaming your mother Herm pulled out when Rex didn't.

We wish your Dad did as well.

Epic Fail!!!!

Great point.

The Jets will be a good judge of his coaching ability. The Jets are not the Ravens. It is obvious he can Coach great players. Now, it will be a matter of coaching good players to be better then they are.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid people that ask questions. That's the only answer that needs to be given.

I think everyone knows what you are trying to get at Gainzo, figured you would wait until Rex lost his first game for this thread. The guy is a great quote now, will be interesting to see how he acts once the season begins

Rex plays to win the game.

While Herm will just settle for any seat on the bus. Because it doesn't matter where you are on the bus, it just matters that you are on the bus.

In the end there may not be any measurable difference between them. But right now the difference is that Rex Ryan represents hope for the future and Herm represents the failures of the past.

This is a Jets fan site. A new coach brings new hopes to Jets fans, you cant try to p*ss on that hope without expecting to catch some crap from the faithful.

Is some of our optimism over the top? Yes.

Is some of our belief in Ryan based on no real data? Yes.

If you want a completely realistic appraisal of Ryan your in the wrong place. Which is probably because your an unemployed troll, who lives in his parent's basement, jerks it to clown porn, and is hoping your mom doesnt burn your pizza bagels tonight.
