1. New scoreboard is on the way for the 2010/2011 season

2. At least the Lowell Coach isn't called "Toot"

3. Don't you eat before the game? Plenty of places to buy beers if you drank during the game.

4. YES!

5. We get plenty of fans. GFY.

I eat before, during, and after games.

And Toot is a great name for a coach at a white trash school.

You need more fans... How about inviting some of the Gangs of Lowell... in between entertainment can be a knife fight between rival gangs. Have Bob Norton commentate.

Linked is a preview of this weekend's slate with UMass Lowell and Providence.

On the right is a picture taken earlier this week at practice, showing off the new scoreboards, which make their debut tomorrow against Providence.

Also - a reminder for fans heading to Tsongas Arena tonight - UMass Lowell defenseman Barry Goers is still collecting old cell phones for his Cell Phones For Soliders campaign. Thus far, Goers has collected over 180 phones and $225 cash in donations since the Dec. 5th launch.

The donated phones will be sold with proceeds used to purchase calling cards for troops overseas. Each phone provides troops abroad with an hour of talk time. Fans are encouraged to bring their old cell phones to all remaining home hockey dates.

Notes

Earlier this season (11/21/09), Chris Auger had two goals and three assists as #4 Lowell netted five unanswered goals in a 6-3 win. Justin Bonitatibus, J.C. Robitaille, and Jeff Velleca scored for Merrimack, as MC outshot UML 33-26.

Friday is the final game of a seven-game road trip spanning 49 days. In 2007-08, Merrimack embarked on a 5-game, 47-day road trip and went 0-4-1. The Warriors are 0-11 on the road this year and 7-1 at home.

Beginning this weekend, Merrimack will play two games every weekend for the remainder of the regular season. The Warriors have played just 12 games, fewest in HEA.

Merrimack has not beaten Lowell since November 1, 2007, its longest active winless drought among any Hockey East team

With 63 goals already this season, the Warriors, ranked fifth in Hockey East in goals, are just nine goals shy of last year

In his latest "From the Desk of the AD" newsletter posted on the Merrimack athletics website, athletic director Glenn Hofmann touched on many topics pertaining to the hockey program (and the other sports at Merrimack - check out the full letter by clicking here).

> "Speaking of hockey our program in essence is being judged on a yearly basis by Hockey East in this respect. There are certain standards that all programs must meet if they are to stay in the conference. While scoreboards were not part of those standards we did install new scoreboards in the Lawler Rink just last week. The new boards now give us the capability to show graphics and keep our fans more involved in games. What is a part of Hockey East standards are chairback seats and that is a major component of this summer

Did you hit the fried dough stand last Saturday when I was off grabbing a beer?

Toot? I don't even know what to say about that!

Lowell has plenty of fans. You were at the season opener this year and saw all the students. Tsongas probably has the best acoustics in Hockey East as any noise made is amplified big time.

The Lowell Police are very excited about your gang plan :rl:

No... I just grabbed a water and 2 gatorades....

Tsongas is one of my favorite new arenas. Good sitelines anywhere. Just wish the concessions wasnt so lousy.

Hockey might be the one thing that could bring the gangs together. We might get a movie out of it.

Looking to bounce back from two tough losses, the #19 UMass Lowell River Hawks (12-9-2, 6-6-2 HE) host a pair of games in the Tsongas Arena this weekend. First up, rival Merrimack rolls into town for a Friday night battle, scheduled for 7 p.m.

Tonight will mark the 106th all-time meeting between the valley rivals, dating back to their respective Division II days. UMass Lowell holds a 66-31-8 series lead and is currently riding a six-game winning streak against the Warriors. When hosting Merrimack, the River Hawks are 36-15-3 overall and 12-4-2 since the opening of the Tsongas Arena.

The programs have clashed once already this season as the River Hawks prevailed, 6-3, in the Tsongas Arena. Chris Auger (Belleville, Ont.) tallied five points (1g, 4a) en route to claiming Hockey East's Player of the Week honor.

Join the River Hawks, Lowell General Hospital and Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union on Friday night in the fight against cancer! Proceeds from all ticket sales will be donated to LGH's TeamWalk for Cancer Care. Also, the first 1,000 fans will receive a free burrito, courtesy of Moe's Southwest Grill.

The following night, the 2008 NCAA Champion Eagles swoop into Lowell for their 89th all-time game against the River Hawks. Characters from the popular Star Wars movies will be in attendance on Saturday and available for photos with fans beginning at 6PM in the lobby. Get in on the act yourself and dress up as your favorite Star Wars character! Also, Alley-Oop the Clown will be twisting balloons prior to the game.

Fans are encouraged to continue donating old cell phones to support Barry Goers' (Ivyland, PA) efforts with the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. Those who donate this weekend will receive a pair of free tickets to UMass Lowell's game on Feb. 26th, against Providence. The donated phones are sold with proceeds used to purchase calling cards for troops overseas. Since the program's launch on Dec. 5th, over 160 phones and $200 in donations have been collected.

Tickets are still available for this weekend by visiting the Tsongas Arena box office or by calling Ticketmaster at (617) 931-2222. Have a group of 20+? Call Scott Donnelly at 978-934-4988 for ticket information and group rates.

I know you are more pissed about missing free burrito night than seeing Mrs. Massachusetts.

Star Wars? You haven't lived until you've seen geeks all dressed up in Star Wars stuff dropping the puck at center ice.

A Zero-Sum Game

If the season ended today, Hockey East would get three teams into the NCAA tournament but none would be seeded highly. According to the current PairWise Rankings, Boston College would top the league teams at No. 9, followed by Massachusetts (tied for 10th) and Vermont (tied for 12th). On or outside the bubble would be New Hampshire (tied for 15th), Maine (20th) and Massachusetts-Lowell (22nd).

All of which means that as the Hockey East teams got assigned to one of the four NCAA regional sites, not one would deserve higher than a No. 3 seed.

Which, if those numbers hold up, means the toughest possible paths to the Frozen Four at Ford Field in Detroit. No first-round cupcakes, if there is such a thing anymore. And conceding faceoff matchups throughout the entire NCAA tournament.

Of course, there

#17 Vermont Catamounts 11-7-2, (Hockey East 5-6-2 8th)

vs

#15 Massachusetts Minutemen 14-8-0, (Hockey East 9-6-0 3rd)

Official Vermont Catamount Hockey Site

When these two teams last met UMass carried, nay, dominated the game in impressive fashion in what may be considered their best game of the season. Casey Wellman netted a hat trick, James Marcou had an astounding five assists, and the team was able to capitalize on 3 of 6 power plays en route to a 6-2 victory. From that point however the teams have fared quite differently. Vermont has gone 7-2-1 since that Thanksgiving week game and currently find themselves 12th in the pairwise. The road since Burlington for the Minutemen has had its share of bumps, starting with the very next game at Quinnipiac and the worst of the rockiness occurred with successive losses in which the team gave up 14 goals. Luckily it does appear that the team is finding its way again with three straight wins, including last weekend

UNH is 1-5-1 against non Hockey East teams. I can see them going to the Garden and losing in the semi's and then getting knocked out in the 1st round of the NCAA's (as usual) as they will probably play in Worcester or Albany.

If UMass & Lowell make the NCAA's you know they are going to be shipped off to St. Paul or Fort Wayne.

I know you are in if both of our teams go to the Garden in March.

I looked at the schedules for UMass and Lowell. Both should get home ice and regardless of what happens at the Garden, should be in the NCAA's.

Albany isn't that far if either team gets to play there. I'm up for that road trip.

VERMONT HOSTS MAINE FOR TWO; UNH AND MERRIMACK PLAY HOME-AND-HOME SET

~UMass squares off vs. BU and PC; UML and NU skate Friday; BC hosts Friars at Conte Forum~

WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- Maine will travel to Burlington for a two-game set vs. the Vermont Catamounts beginning on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse, while Merrimack and No. 12 UNH take the ice for a home-and-home series starting Friday at Lawler Arena. Providence College will play a pair of games on the weekend traveling to No. 15 Boston College on Friday and hosting No. 14 Massachusetts on Saturday.

Maine was victorious in the first meeting of the season series with the Catamounts by a 4-1 score at Alfond Arena back on Oct. 30. The Catamounts are coming off a split with the Minutemen last weekend, while the Black Bears scored four goals in a pair home exhibition victories last week. Sophomore forward Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) is currently third in the nation with 1.45 points per game for the Black Bears and his 32 points overall (13g,19a) is the ninth best total in the country. Vermont sophomore goalie Rob Madore (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has been outstanding over his last three starts, owning a 1.40 GAA and a .953 save percentage with two victories.

The Warriors and Wildcats will finish their league season series over the weekend after a 5-4 UNH win on Nov. 28 in North Andover, Mass. The

Huge weekend for Lowell coming up with BU @ Tsongas and then Merrimack at Volpe. If Lowell doesn't pick up 3 or 4 points then home ice is pretty much out of the question as they have only 8 games left after this weekend.

Merrimack is no joke at home with a 9-1-0 record at that sh%t hole they call an arena.

LBS: You heading to Amherst on Friday for the game? That game may set the all time attendance record at Mullins. Its huge for you guys.

Nope... Staying at home and watching it with the g/f... if it wasnt on Tv i would probably go.

With the Super Bowl on SUnday and other plans Sat, going friday is a tough sell... especially after dragging her to BU friday... BTW... got her to hate BU with a passion... called the fans a bunch of dooshies.

I would love to see 'Mack make the playoffs, hopefully they can pick up enough points without hurting our teams....
