XBox 360 sales top 30 million with 20 million LIVE subscribers

by Robin Wauters on May 28, 2009

xbox.pngMicrosoft just announced sales of Xbox 360 consoles have passed the 30 million mark globally, up 28 percent over last year, which it claims is the highest percentage growth in hardware sales of any console so far in 2009. In addition, the Xbox LIVE community has grown to over 20 million users, coming from 26 countries.

And these users spend money, too. In a press release touting the sales numbers, Microsoft claims U.S. consumers alone have spent $14.5 billion across all categories on Xbox 360 at retail, and consumers worldwide have downloaded close to 1 billion pieces of gaming and entertainment content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace to date.

It was recently reported that PlayStation sales plummeted 18 per cent overall during fiscal year 2008, although the numbers appear to be picking up again this year.

I'm sure ecurb has a perfectly good explanation for this.

You know its coming.....

Easy 15 million were bought because of the RROD. It's easy to inflate numbers when people have to buy 2 or more because it breaks so easily.:rim:

Sounds about right.....LOL

It would speak volumes if 5million people rebought a product that broke on them twice already.

Playstation #'s dropped because it was year two... of course they cannot top the release year...

It is estimated that at least 10 million people have had at least 2 Xboxs and they count all of those as sales...

Also they count new/duplicate usernames on LIVE... sort of like how forums work ;)

PS3 is still selling at a faster rate than the Xbox did and anyone with an internet connection is a part of their online community for free.

Xbox - 3.5 Years - 28 Million Sold (a ton replacements) - Average of 8 million per year not accounting for replacements

PS3 - 2.5 Years - 23 Million Sold (less than 1% failure rate) - Average of 9.2 million per year not accounting for replacements

Xbox is only ahead in numbers simply because it came out a year earlier.

PS3 is more powerful, has more features, will be around longer and is more reliable.

Buying an Xbox today is like buying a 2008 model year car for full price today.

No it means they were more willing to take a free or cheap replacement over investing in a new $500 system.

People continued to buy Chrysler minivans knowing the tranny would be no good at 50k miles... does not make it a good brand or product.

Super. So the PS3 will still be around pumping out those oh so spectacular titles while Microsoft rolls out the Xbox 720 or whatever the hell they call it. Sounds good. :confused0061:

The next Xbox will possibly catch up to the PS3 but not definitely... it will most likely be an overpriced equal match to it.

Please tell me what Xbox titles there are that make it so much better than the PS3?

Give me something unique... not a shooter...

lol, this post is sooooo full of s##t i am not even going to debate the points.

As much as it pains me to admit, msft has one real hit with their xbox division. They clearly came in and knocked a defacto leader from the top. PS2's are now outselling ps3's! Sony simply screwed up ignoring the developer community and giving them an environment that was too much of a pain in the @ss to develop for.

Content is king, msft realized that when they bought bungie to kick off their console business and they realized it by not trying to match sony on tech specs. Look at the success of the wii for crying out loud! It is about content. You can sit there and deny it to yourself all you want, but the market is speaking, the ps3 sucks no matter how advanced it is. The best technology doesn't always win.

PS3 fanboy apologist propaganda. The PS2 for this past month of april outsold the PS3, that is ridiculous! The PS2 outsells it because the PS3 doesn't have as much inherent value to consumers, it is wildly overpriced. The cheapest ps3 outsells the expensive one 9-1, that is crazy. Sony keeps it around exactly because of the demand for it. As for MSFT dumping old products, I guess you haven't noticed them still selling xp??

MSFT came up with a great upgrade from the original xbox with the 360, they priced it right, and they have compelling games that people want to play and require the newest hardware to play it on. Yeah the PS3 on paper is a better console, but as someone who plays both on a 70 inch hd tv where flaws are apparent, the ps3 does not really kill the 360 in graphics, the xbox online is better (and worth the money) than the ps3, and the games are more appealing to me. There is just no getting around this.

When the PS3 fanboys buy a 360 and some games to go along with their ps3 and give it a chance, then they can come back and voice an unbiased opinion, until then it is all " blah blahblah blah blahbhal blah blah bluray blah blah blah blah better processor bla blah blah blah blah free online blah blah blah blah"

Ok Xbox fanboy, just trying to give a reason. Vista is crap hence the XP support. Not really a great upgrade when the RROD can show up at anytime due to the crappy design of the console. Not to mention it's hardly next gen since it still uses the DVD format which will prove harmful if it hasn't already when Final Fantasy comes out when the XBox version will ship with rumored 4-8 discs vs. the PS3's 1(possible doubled layered 50 GB). You'd only notice the difference if you actually played PS3 exclusives that run in 1080p otherwise you won't see a difference. If you check the numbers the only reason why the 360 is ahead in sales is the extra year that the 360 has over the PS3 other than that the worldwide sales are close every year, once the rumored PS3 slim comes out you'll see the PS3 sales spike higher than the 360.

Games for the 360? You mean the 1st shooters or is there something else that's an exclusive?

Ok Xbox fanboy,

I have owned all three since they each came out on opening day, so I am no fan boy and totally unbiased.

Not really a great upgrade when the RROD can show up at anytime due to the crappy design of the console.

lol, ok yeah, the 360 is not an upgrade over the original xbox. And nobody out there is able to get their machines to work, lol.

Not to mention it's hardly next gen since it still uses the DVD format which will prove harmful if it hasn't already when Final Fantasy comes out when the XBox version will ship with rumored 4-8 discs vs. the PS3's 1(possible doubled layered 50 GB).

lol, the difference in hardware has been a nonfactor thus far in all the other cross platform games, and by the time it does mean anything msft will have a new machine out there. Sony put bluray out there to sell bluray movies, they own the bluray tech and make money off that from licensing.

You'd only notice the difference if you actually played PS3 exclusives that run in 1080p otherwise you won't see a difference.

Ok so let me get this straight, i will notice a difference if i play a game on ps3 that doesn't exist for comparison as a game on 360? OOOKKAAAAYYYY!! It is really easy to say that when it is impossible to prove due to the fact that there is nothing to compare it to. The fact that the cross platform games are no better on PS3 just backs up my statement that sony screwed up with the developers kit and all that tech in the machine just goes to waste. If a cross platform game is no better on ps3 than 360, then why spend the extra money on the ps3? And as far as the gear i watch on, i am using a 70 inch tv that is considered one of the best ever built, handmade by sony engineers in japan than hand tuned and rechecked in the us after shipping, only sold through the sony stores. So with this bad @ss machine I am situated pretty well to tell the quality of a given source, and the ps3 just doesn't really have much of a noticable difference if any at all.

If you check the numbers the only reason why the 360 is ahead in sales is the extra year that the 360 has over the PS3 other than that the worldwide sales are close every year, once the rumored PS3 slim comes out you'll see the PS3 sales spike higher than the 360.

But the ps3 currently month to month sells less than the 360

Games for the 360? You mean the 1st shooters or is there something else that's an exclusive?

Why do the ps3 fan boys insist on saying "other than the 1st shooters" or "take away the first shooters" like ecurb did in another post. What you are really saying is " So other than the greatest video games out there regardless of platform, what games does xbox have?" Do you see the absurdity in that. But ok, lets take away all exclusives, and talk about cross platform games. None of the best sellers (or any of them really) are noticibly better on ps3, so why spend the money?

I'm just skimming over these posts because it has all obviously been said hundreds of times before on the internet, on each side. Without refuting your general claim, using XP as an example of Microsoft not dumping old products is silly. They've been gouging customers over that for over a year now, by charging more for that than Vista. They've essentially force-fed people Vista; not a good business practice by any means. (By good, I mean consumer-friendly.)

The way they stopped supporting the Xbox once the 360 came out was a strange move. I'd be pissed if I couldn't afford a 360 and they just totally ignore the old console to urge people on to the next. At least with the Playstation brand you have the option of staying with the PS2 and getting some games supported after the PS3's release.

The point of my remark was to counter the op who said "Part of that is Sony wants to keep the PS2 alive for profits while Microsoft just basically killed off the Xbox as soon as the 360 was launched as Microsoft usually does with all their products."

Don't get me wrong, i am no fan of msft, I was just pointing out that he was incorrect. As for lack of xbox support, game developers can still develop games for it if they choose, but msft has had such a big hit with the new one, why should they they continue cranking out old hardware? Whenever electronics companies update a product they stop making the old model. Sony just haapens to have a HUGE base of users with ps2 hardware and games that the original xbox just doesn't have as a gen1 console. Also, PS3 pricing has only helped demand for the ps2, the360 is more reasonable.

No it is not anymore...and when it was it was also crushing the 360... (obviously as the PS3 outsells the 360)

PS3 and 360 sold about twice as many systems as the PS2 last week... but Sony hit the jackpot with the PS2 when Microsoft ditched the Xbox... now Sony has the only entry level system with new games coming out.

Nintendo is spanking both companies... but Microsoft is a distant 3rd with only one system available and that system is selling at a slower rate than any other system available at the moment.

It took Microsoft 3 years and millions of replacements to hit 22 million.

Sony hit 22 million in 2.5 years with very few replacements.

Even if it were straight up new customer sales and you do not account for replacements Sony is kicking ass... if you account for all the RROD 360's Sony is ahead by a mile.

i love the whole replacements angle. lol, is that what the geeks on the game boards are using as an excuse now??

Ya know, if i buy something and it breaks i won't buy it again if a) it isn't something i really like enough to buy twice or B) if there is something else i view as better that i could replace it with. I guess all those "replacement" purchases are a testament to how much value people place on the 360 over the ps3.

Dude, get over it, you picked a sh$$ty console, you paid too much for it, and now you are forced to have to defend your choice since you have dug your hole so deep. It's ok man, you know you want to play halo with the rest of us, bwahahahaha

I could buy a 360 if I wanted another... I dont... I am not stuck with my PS3... actually I could sell it on Ebay and buy a 360 with the money... I choose not too...

Also people did not go out and buy a new 360 at Best Buy when it broke... Microsoft sold them units at a discounted price ($120 I think it was) to replace their unit and robbed as many people as the could before they got called out on it and started doing it cheaper or free.

It is not people like me that have a PS3 that are stuck.. My PS3 is worth enough money used to get a new 360... it is people who have a 360 that are stuck when it breaks... they either pay $100 bucks to fix it or throw it away and spend $500 bucks on the better system...

If a person with a RROD could scoop up a PS3 for the cost of getting a replacement 360, most would..

April Hardware Sales #'s worldwide.

http://vgchartz.com/monthly.php?month=4&year=2009&boxartz=1#

DS - 3.1 million

Wii - 1.2 million

PSP - 709k

360 - 654k

PS3 - 648k

PS2 - 409k

That site's numbers are bull, NPD is a real research firm.

And here are the real US numbers

360----175,000

ps2----172,000

ps3----127,000

And year to date

360----1,205,000

ps3---- 824,400

ps2---- 516,200

And software sales top 10 titles for april, 360 comes in with numbers 5,6,9 and ps3 has only one spot at 10

Dude, whatever, you know you want to play halo with the cool kids, it's ok, just come out of the closet. Your toys suck, deal with it, haha.

Yes and you directed me a to wiki site... not "NPD" which all of these sites the one I used included draw their #'s from....

We can spin it a million different ways... the one thing we can both agree on and know for sure is that the PS3 is selling at a faster rate than the 360 did and at a much higher price point...

Just like the PS2 before it.. the PS3 has built a solid user base and once they cut the price it will continue to reach #'s microsoft can on dream of reaching.

You really think that when they announce a $299 PS3 next month the 360 stands a chance to stay on top in total sales even with a 1 year head start?

PS3 has been steadily gaining on the 360 and it cost hundreds more... at the same price it will not even be a fair fight...

I played some GOW2 today... I dont think the 360 sucks.. I just think the PS3 is much better and the obvious better investment.

I use a media server to watch videos from my PC over my network through my PS3 to my HDTV... can I do that with a 360?

I have a web browser on my PS3 that I can watch sites like Hulu.com on... can I do that with a 360?

I can install linux on my PS3... can I do that with a 360?

I can easily and affordably upgrade my harddrive with a simple laptop drive on my PS3 can I do that with a 360?

I can use my six axis controller to play bowling just like on the wii, can I do that on the 360?

I can watch Blu-rays on my Ps3... How are those HD-DVD rip off drives treating you?

The list goes on...

Yes, I have media server with Twonky installed and I can stream content through my 360.

Yes, though I'm sure you'll argue that this isn't an "easy" solution.

Can you watch Netflix streaming content natively on your PS3? No.

However, you can watch Hulu on 360 and Netflix on PS3 by using PlayOn.

You also neglected to mention GTA IV: The Lost and the Damned as a 360 exclusive, as well as all of the other exclusive DLC not available to PS3 owners (including another GTA IV add-on coming in the Fall).

As someone who was looking to buy one of these consoles within the last year, the 360 was a no-brainer for me, especially since I see no need to own a Blu-Ray player at this point. The only thing that I feel I'm missing out on is a good baseball game, as The Show is a solid franchise, while MLB 2k9 is a disaster.

i love the whole replacements angle. lol, is that what the geeks on the game boards are using as an excuse now??

Ya know, if i buy something and it breaks i won't buy it again if a) it isn't something i really like enough to buy twice or B) if there is something else i view as better that i could replace it with. I guess all those "replacement" purchases are a testament to how much value people place on the 360 over the ps3.

Dude, get over it, you picked a sh$$ty console, you paid too much for it, and now you are forced to have to defend your choice since you have dug your hole so deep. It's ok man, you know you want to play halo with the rest of us, bwahahahaha

To be fair, if people buy a ton of games for a system and then the system breaks on them, are they more likely to buy a replacement system or go with an entirely different console that renders all their past purchases worthless? Once you start with a console, it's pretty hard to just walk away from it after the first problem. It's kind of like war.
