Digging deep into the AFC East mailbag

May 31, 2009 9:00 AM

Posted by ESPN.com's Tim Graham

Dan in New York poses an interesting hypothetical question: What if Kellen Clemens holds off Mark Sanchez in training camp and then plays like the quarterback the New York Jets thought he would be? How would the Jets handle those two quarterbacks moving forward?

Tim Graham: Clemens is entering the final year of his contract. One would assume he'll be gone in 2010. If he plays poorly or Sanchez beats him out for the job, then it's easy to say goodbye. If Clemens lights up the scoreboard, then he becomes a hot commodity in free agency. And that's where things would get interesting for the Jets. They might want to re-sign him, but Clemens and Sanchez are represented by the same agent, David Dunn. An agent is supposed to work in the best interests of his client, but keeping Clemens in a Jets uniform would not be in Sanchez's best interests.

if he lights it up i guess we could pull a cassel..franchise him and trade him

Why would you guys be so quick to trade a proven quarterback? There are about 12-15 in the league that are good, trading one away makes no sense unless you have Tom Brady waiting in the wings. And Mark Sanchez is not Tom Brady.

I hate to say it I agree with you. Sanchez is a first rate prospect but he has yet to throw an NFL pass, to compare this to Brady/Cassel is just not fair. Brady is a sure first ballot hall of famer.

Its easy to say that, but were you able to predict Brady's success before 2001?

But if we traded Clemens we would have an unproven Sanchez and would have traded a proven QB who was worthy of the franchise tag. I just stated to compare this to New England situation is unfair because after Cassell was traded by NE they fell back to a hall of fame QB and the Jets would fall back to an unproven prospect

My thing is this. If you have a guy performing at a high level at that position, you don't move him. And if you do, you had better make damn sure the guy behind him will be just as good the following year and for the rest of his career.

Phillip Rivers isn't quite as good as Drew Brees, but the Chargers survived that decision.

All that said, I don't think Clemens is even worth the time of day and I think Sanchez will go on to have a good NFL career. Comparable to that of Matt Hasselbeck's.
