flgreen
Cowherd made a good point on his show today. Pay Per View NFL is on the way. I agree The Networks are losing 10's of millions of dollars on the NFL right now. That won't go on much longer. Couple that with the ridiculous PSL fees, and more and more fans are saying I'll just stay home and watch it for FREE. Not for long What is the Max you would be willing to pay to watch a Jets game on TV? For me, if it goes over $10 a game, I'm gone fishing.

flgreen
won't happen. I hope you are right, but I'm not so sure. The current TV contract was signed in 2004. 6 years 20.4 BILLION. I remember at the time the networks were doing a lot of moaning about how much money they were losing. Their ego's finally got the best of them, and the contracts were picked up for the prestige of carrying NFL games. The next contract in 2011 is going to dwarf the 2004 contract. The networks will have to explain to their share holders why they are throwing away so much money. This might get real ugly. I really hope it doesn't go down, but it looks like there will be some MAJOR changes in how the NFL is viewed.

There's a reason for this, they are a draw across the country, they are rare, and so people will shell out the money. How much money do you think comes in when Cinncinnati plays Arizona on PPV? What sport in the country has the rabid fan base the NFL has? So far the NFL fans have only whimpered while they were being raped. If the fans will swallow the idea of PSL's they will swallow anything. As much as the fans are crying about the PSL's the stadium will be sold out first game if the Jets are competitive. Doesn't matter. The fans may be more 'rabid' as you claim, but that doesn't mean they're going to pay for something they've been getting for free for a long time. Also, contrary to what you may want to believe, the NFL makes it's money not off the 'rabid' fans like us, but off the casual fans, who tune in every week still. For every guy with 20 posts a day on their favorite teams message board, who will stick it out through thick and thin, there's 20 guys that have never logged in, don't discuss or obsess over the team, and simply watch the game and maybe read the paper. Point is, WE are the minority. PPV risks alienating the majority, those who aren't buying PSLs, and if pushed by PPV, will find something else to do on Sundays... Ranger
the problem with what Cowherd was proposing is that each game would be PPV. so if you wanted to watch the Jets, fine I would pay the money for that game. But I would not pay the money to see every game or any game other than the Jets. They would also be losing alot of money as most people will just watch the games for free over the internet through sopcast and such.
flgreen
EY as I said, I hope you are right, but lets look at the TV ratings for the week of the NFL draft in 2008( I can't find 2009) The NFL draft, which is mostly watched by "rabid fans", and not the casual fan, had a rating of 3.4. That's also a Saturday. A weak TV night. The NBA PLAYOFFS that same week had a rating of only 3.0. That's the playoffs. That's was before the Draft went prime time. That's a lot of rabid fans. http://tvbythenumbers.com/2008/04/29/wwe-raw-nfl-draft-nba-playoffs-and-house-lead-nielsen-weekly-cable-viewing/3550 I hope the fans don't put up with it, but I suspect they will. The Crusher
It's a very interesting question. The fact we have been getting games for free for so long makes me think it would be tuff to do. Would this mean every single NFl game would be PPV. no more Sunday ticket, No more Monday night football, no more advertising bucks? Not sure. Personally I would probably pay for the Jets game since I already have Sunday ticket and go out to see a few a year and catch a home home game or two a year and anything that is played local. SMC
Cowherd overlooked the fact that the Networks signed a lucritive contract extension to carry NFL games through the 2012 season. So when is PPV coming, in 2013?
JoeWillie
Let's not kid ourselves, guys. Fact is, professional sports fans have been paying for things they used to get for free for years. It started with cable. The Yankees and Mets used to have 90% of their games on free TV in the 70's and 80's, now you have to pay for cable to see the same 90%. You used to be able to see all Knicks and Rangers road games on free TV. Now you pay for 'em. Same with the Islanders and Nets. Don't be surprised if PPV is the next step in the process. And if the Jets and Giants were no longer on free TV, and the only way you could get to see the games in NY was to purchase it, I believe the vast majority of Jets and Giants fans would. I'm not saying it makes business sense for the NFL to do it. It may over time. But they will assess it if they haven't already. Just my opinion. flgreen
I don't want to seem like I am for this. I'm not. Just playing Devil's advocate here. I do think it is going to happen in the next ten years. Here is the way I would do it. It would still stay in the ticket format. Price would go up, but not prohibitive. All cable providers would hae access to it. NFL games would be pulled off of free TV. You would buy a yearly subscription, and have access to all games. People will raise hell, then quietly buy it. I remember when I moved to Florida. It was hell. No Jets football. Then bars started getting those monster satellite dishes. They got everything for free. Sports, movies everything. Then the Ticket came out. I swore i would never pay for it. Guess what? I have the Ticket. You older guys, think back to about 1990. There were a few of those monster dishes around. They got everything for free. Then the movie providers started scrambling their signals so you couldn't get them for free anymore. Everyone raised hell that they were losing something they had gotten for free. Everyone swore they would never pay for a movie. How did that work? The fans will pay it. Lil Bit Special
There would have to be a major decline in tv contracts before they go to PPV. there just arent enough die hard fans willing to shell out the money for the games. Plus the stigma of PPV would severely hurt the NFL. If they think they are teflon and can deal with any blowback they will be quite disappointed. JoeWillie
Yes, but in order to complete the analogy you've created, all tv would have to go PPV. You can't just dismiss the last 30 years when people DID have choices. Fact is that when most Ranger games that were previously on free TV went to cable in the 80's, those fans had a choice. Don't watch or dip into their pockets and buy something they previously got for free. Ditto with the Mets, Yankees, Islanders, Knicks, and Nets. Most fans back then who had the option to buy, did. That's why cable TV is what it is today and that's my point. I believe there is a chance that the NFL thinks that PPV is a viable REGIONAL money maker for the NFL even though I hate the idea and hope they never do it. While New Yorkers might not purchase the Cardinals vs the 49ers on a PPV basis, if the NFL blacked out all Jets games in New York so that the only way you could see them was through PPV, I believe most Jets fans would buy them. I'm not saying it's a great business model or that the NFL would ever do it. It would probably be a PR nightmare for the NFL initially, but if history has proven anything, it's that the sports fan, all of us, are suckers when it comes to wanting to see our teams and that when push comes to shove, most will dip into their pockets and spend the extra money to enjoy their teams. Just my opinion.
