I doubt Mr. Cohen even knows why an age minimum was established. Lil Bit Special
As a college basketball fan, I say let them go. I hate the one and done. They should be forced to give 3 years like baseball players. Let them get drafted and let them fail miserably. lets hear all the sad tales of how guys failed in the NBA and how the system took advantage of them and now they are poor and dumb. As someone who knows a little about sports law, I say f#ck em. There's a reason this is in place. Sure there are freaks like Lebron or Odom who deserve the chance, but there are far too many who will fail. Just look at the guys who leave early and never make an impact. Lil Bit Special
It is a stupid rule, no doubt about it. The rule was established because too many players were failing in their attempt at the NBA. It was embarrassing. And it was the white man taking advantage of the poor black dumb basketball player. It also protected the interests of college basketball, who feared losing prized recruits and possibly jeopardizing the viability of college basketball. It protected the interests of the NBA, who faced a severe image crisis due to immaturity of players and their poor choices. If too many fans feel players are immature and are bad for the game, fans will stop watching. It protected the union's interest by giving them the ability to gain something in collective bargaining while not giving anything up. They will still make tons of money off the players... now they wait a year and they gained in collective bargaining. So either we accept 18 yr olds being drafted, being taken advantage of, college basketball taking a hit or we hold onto the system now. The NBA would like to keep this system, add a year to benefit college basketball which is a feeder league for the NBA for free. Allowing 18yr olds into the draft helps only the player while prohibiting players benefits the NBA, college basketball and the union. Personally... f#ck em. Let them play. Let college basketball get cleaned up. But if you choose to go to college, you're stuck there for 3 years.
