Porter: We're still the champs

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Whether it be in Las Vegas or the various preseason power rankings all over the Internet, the New England Patriots have been chosen the AFC East's team to beat for 2009.

Miami Dolphins outside linebacker Joey Porter takes offense. Porter declared Friday morning that the road to the AFC East title will come through Miami this year, and the Dolphins are the "champions until proven otherwise."

"I don't understand how you can put somebody in front of us," Porter said Friday morning after he and quarterback Chad Pennington were named co-winners of the team's Dan Marino MVP Award in a ceremony at Joe's Stone Crab Restaurant on South Beach.

"We won the championship. We were AFC East champions. I just don't think it's supposed to happen like that. You've got to beat somebody to be the champs. We had to beat somebody to be the champs."

The Dolphins pulled off one of the most dramatic single-season turnarounds in NFL history last year, after Bill Parcells signed up to run the team's football operations and cleaned house.

With new general manager Jeff Ireland, new head coach Tony Sparano and Pennington running the offense, the Dolphins rebounded from a one-victory campaign in 2007 to edge out the Patriots for the AFC East crown. The Dolphins and Patriots each went 11-5, but the Dolphins made the playoffs on a tiebreaker.

"I feel that we've put ourselves in position to be a championship team," said Porter, who led the AFC with 17.5 sacks last year. "The doubting is over now.

"We proved that the AFC East comes through Miami, and having that feeling, knowing that we're the [division] champions until proven otherwise," he added. "Our mindset is to win the division, set ourselves up for a playoff spot and then anything can happen once we reach the playoffs.

"That wasn't always the thought a couple years ago. Last year, coming here with a new coaching staff, we didn't know how it was going to pan out. Now we've seen how it pans out. So we can get ourselves in position so we're not just happy with going to the playoffs anymore.

"We're thinking about championships."

Did Joey forget the Dolphins won the AFCE on a tiebreaker over the Brady-less Patriots? I can't believe the media is picking the Pats to win the Division since Brady is back

With Rex Ryan talking like crazy, TO in Buffalo, and good old Joey down in South Florida the AFCE is going to be a lot of fun this season!

In fairness, it is always possible that all of the teams in the AFC East that are actually better than the Dolphins will end up with injured starting QBs again.

It's an odd numbered year so Chad will be the one missing games with injury while Sanchez/Clemens, Edwards & Brady play all 16 games.

I guarantee that the winner of the AFCE this season (unless it's Miami) wont lose their 1st round home playoff game.

Miami Dolphins: Worst to first to worst again. There's no team in the division I fear less.

Porter and their fans can bask in the glow of unadulterated luck for a few more months, but it's very nearly over. Let them enjoy it. The more they they yap, the more fun it'll be to watch them fail this year.

The last time the Dolphins won back to back AFCE Division titles was in the mid '80's.

With 23 division Championships, it's hard to keep track of what order they were earned ;)

What are you smoking? Here is the list of AFCE Division Titles:

Dolphins: 14

Pats: 10

Bills: 7

Colts: 6

Jets:2

The Dolphins won 10 of those between 1971 and 1985 for goodness sakes.

Actually it was 2000 and 2001. The last time the Jets won the division back to back it was called the AFL East in '68 & '69.

That is wrong on so many levels. The Pats won the AFCE in 2001 and I wasn't talking about the AFL days so that's irrelevant.

You have just become the poster child for "Pats fans are all bandwagoners."

Thanks so much for that

Damn, that's a remarkable accomplishment for the Fins to win the AFCE in 2001 considering that the Pats went 11-5, had a 1st round bye and won the SB that year.

Man, and you're a Pats fan????

I wasn't looking up the Patriots. I was looking up the Dolphins (and also the Jets) and just copied down the years without even thinking about what the Patriots were doing those years.

If I had stopped to think about the Pats I would not have posted that.

I'm thinking this should be a weekly segment.

This week, it's Joey Porter on the AFCE.

Next week, Porter on Government Bailouts.

Then, Porter on Shakespear

After that, Porter tackles (pun) Healthcare.

Followed by, Porter on contemporary theories in psychology.

And, in our series finale, Porter sacks (another pun) Swine flu and other pandemics.

We are the team to beat, we're the defending AFC East Champs.

lol.....no you're not. you guys lucked into the afc east trophy and then went and embarassed the integrity of the division by that joke of a game you played against the ravens. you guys just went into that game and proved that you didn't belong there at all.
