I think this could be an interesting debate over who is a better safety. These two are easily the top two S's in the league (Bob Sanders being third, but he isn't on the level of these two).

Both are completely different players. Reed [FS] is an unbelievable ballhawk, with SUCH a high football IQ, knowing where he ball will be, etc. Also, great hands and speed. Once he makes the pick, more times than not he will take it to the house. Best awareness of any player in the game today, IMO.

Than on the other hand, you have Troy Polamalu [sS] the do everything safety. You will ALWAYS see him makig HUGE plays for that Amazing Steeler D. Whether it is a big sack, or stuffing the runner at the LOS, or making a big pick, you can always count on TP43 to make the play. He carried the Steelers to the SB this past year with that Pick6. Amazing player as well.

All that being said, I would take Ed Reed on my team. His mere presence on the football field scares the crap out of opposing QB's, and to me, there is almost nothing bigger than being able to force turnovers, let alone score for your team.

I think Ed Reed and I dont even think it is close. Reed absolutely makes the Baltimore secondary and really their whole defense work. His presence is a big reason why Ryan and the DCs before him are often able to somewhat sell out because all it takes is one mistake and Reed usually capitalizes.

Polamalu does have a knack for making a big play, but he is not in Reed's class. I think he gets alot of his rep from his fantastic playoff run a few years ago when the Steelers somehow went to the SB. Certainly his return for a TD was good for the Steelers, but Flacco was just awful that day. His pick was a gimmee into triple coverage. If you wanted to make a comparison for Rhodes I think Polamalu is the guy you look at. I dont think he is a ton better than KR. Reed is alot better than KR.

This is a tough one. Reed being a FS and Polamalu being a SS have different resposibilities on defense. Both are the best in the league at their respective positions.

If you held a gun to my head I guess I would pick Polamalu. He plays his best in the big games and in every game I see him play it seems like he is in the middle of every play.

Ed Reed will be the best safety to every play when it's all said and done. Frankly, I don't think this is even really close. Polamalu is a great player, but no one even measures up to Reed.

Yeah, you should know. Your boy Chad threw to him more than he did to the entire Dolphins last season.

Yeah, Reed got a playoff pick 6 off the great Chad P, that pretty much cements him as the best. Troy merely pick 6'd a rookie Flacco. ;)

Put Polamalu in Bob Suttons Jets defense and he wouldn't look so good.

It's easy to look great with one of the most dominant front 7's in the league. Dick LeBeau's complex and aggresive schemes don't hurt either.

Then let's at least wait until after 2009 to make the judgment that Rhodes is better than Polamalu.

Ronnie Lott is the best safety to ever play the game. He played the ball like a cornerback, and he may have been the most feared hitter to ever play the game.

Mangini took Rhodes off the line of scrimmage because Rhodes backs off from contact, bro. If a player is going to go into the fetal position every time a TE comes at him, a coach has no choice but to put him 15 yards off the ball.

I have a question though.

What makes you think, at this point, that Rhodes is better than Polamalu? Because at this point it's not even an opinion that Polamalu is better than Rhodes, it's a fact.

One is horrificily overrated and the other underrated.

The best safeties I have ever seen, in no particular order:

Reed

Lott

Palomala

Ken Houston

Mel Renfro (he switched to CB mid career)

Ken Easley

Larry Wilson

Reggie Tongue would have made the list, but he was short, he was slow and he was ugly.
