gg
Since we have so many new posters ( i realize not so new anymore ) Anyway, I want to explain the evolution of the "****"ing of the word. I was one of the first ten of fifteen original members of the site ( actually less, but whos counting ) Anyway, i noticed that Na-zi was used all the time in a way that was disturbing to me, as a person with relatives that were survivors ( and some who didnt survive) the concentration camps in WWII. THe word was used as if it didnt mean anything, as if it wasnt important. As if calling someone a "na-zi" was the same as calling them and "as$hole" In my mind, it has a meaning that far outreaches a simple insult. Against my bleeding heart liveral self, I asked Tomshane ( the before zero tomshane .. that was an admin back then) to "*" the word. I just wanted people to think before they used the word. I still people use the word haphazardly, and I believe that there are plenty of words that can be used for particular situations. If you think i am blowing things out of proportion, that is your right. THis is not just about being Jewish. THere were many others who were in the concentration camps. If you are still arent sure afteer reading this .. read the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel. It is only 128 pages, but it should give you a sense of what the word "****" means. On this day after D-day, i thought this was the time to explain this all. Just think before you use it, does it really related to the power it should be remembered with? that is all i ask. Arsis
Really? On a football message board? People come here to talk **** and escape and feel better from the problems of life. If there are one or two people who use the word. Act like a well adjusted adult and ignore them.

DMaynard
I don't think GG is calling for censorship. Just common sense. It is a repulsive word that conjurs horrible memories for the entire world and Jewish people in particular. You can use it if you want. Or you can be an adult. Bob
GG is ABSOLUTELY right. It's too bad there are people here who are so stupid, ignorant and inconsiderate. There's no reason to think it's going to change, though. Some people just suck.

SouthernJet
agree that it shouldnt be used as a description of someone as it implies much different connotation that perosn impied..i.e people say that when someone is a stckler for detail, but obviosuly not a true characterization.. BUT, I see no harm i nword when using it in context of adult talk from a historiccal point of view..Nothin gwrong with that.. I have quite a bit of hisotry with nazzis and leninists.. My familys village (and realtives) were ransacked and people killed by both of these groups in Ukraine. But, I am not offended when people use those words in ahisotrical context..But I wouldnt like being called anazzi or lenonist off the cuff per say.. Borgoguy
I am a descendant of another group of survivors, non-Fascist Italians. My father was a young boy during WWII, but routinely saw the atrocities committed by the camicie nere, or Black Shirts, and the Germans or N-azis, including a group of partisans shot in our town square. Specifically, my grandfather (Dad's Dad), who was a building contractor, was unable to secure work during the war--and was taken several times and beaten by the Fascists because he would not join the Party. What they did not know, is that my nonno and uncles were leaders of the partisans in our area. Knowing all this, I use the terms Fascist and N-azi when it is warranted or for comedic effect. Although I agree that the words are offensive to some, it is ridiculous to ban them from use on this site or on any other. The presumption is that we are all adults and we have the ability to hear or read an offensive word and go on with our lives. If someone is using the words as terms of disparagement against another, then the moderators should do their job and chastise that person for it. gg
My initial post was to explain WHY the word comes out in "****" on this site. THere are at least two schools of thought when it comes to this word ( and probably more) THe first is that the word should not be used in a comedic way as it diminishes the word, and what it means in history and as we move on as people. Could you imagine jokingly calling a survivor of the concentration camps a na,zi.. even in a joking way? Would they find it funny? I know the people who i know, would be offended to the core. Another school of thought is that by using the word "na-zi" in a comedic way ( as borgo does and as seinfeld has done) diminishes the power of the word. I disagree with this school of thought, but that could be because the word is very personal to me. We live in a country where you can use this word and others freely, and i am so very happy about that. BUT i just wanted people to think about it before they used it. There are plenty of words on this site that are banned because they are offensive. I just wanted to explain why Na-zi is banned. Unlike other words, you can use the word Na.zi, you just need to take the time and think about it. To assume that the mods are here constantly moderatoring every post on a site when they have jobs and families of their own is ridiculous. I just wanted to explain WHY the word was "*" in the first place .

It seems that whenever posters cross the line they are either caught directly by the mods or flagged by one of the posters, who report the infraction. As for our ever increasing "community", i just think it becomes impossible for people to read every post and either report it or have it caught by a mod. i dont want this to get in a disucssion about insults on the site. again i just wanted to explain why the word is how it is here.. and to have people to think about the word, and (of course) my hope is that people to find a different word to serve the intent of their statement.
