Day Two of Mini Camp

That Rex Ryan sure knows how to have fun, doesn't he?

In keeping with his tradition of opening his press conference with a little stand up comedy, the Jets coach tossed another jab at Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder, who responded to Ryan's comeback yesterday evening. Ryan's comments were relayed to the Crowder and he threw a little more gas on this small June brush fire.

Talking all the chatter in stride, Ryan didn't back down again today.

"First off, Channing Crowder had a rebuttal," Ryan said. "Let's see if he can top this one: I've walked over tougher guys going to a fight than Channing Crowder. It's funny, the dude is going to kill me. We'll make that trade. They'll throw us both out, but we'll make that trade. "

Keep in mind folks that Ryan is smiling when he's saying these things. There's no anger or hatred in his voice. The only thing he gets defensive about is when people knock him for being who he is.

I'm not sure whether most of you agree with his comical trash talking or not, but I think it's pretty funny. In this era when athletes and coaches speak in mostly bland cliches (cough, Derek Jeter; cough Alex Rodriguez; cough Eric Mangini) it's quite refreshing to hear a professional coach or athlete actually say what's on his mind and not give the same old stale canned answers.

We'll have some video of today's practice posted later on our web site and that should hopefully include Ryan's remarks provided that guy with the big head didn't ruin the shot. So be on the lookout for that.

Now moving along to the matters of the day:

Starting with the position battle that everyone wants to know about, it was a rather ho-hum morning practice for Kellen Clemens and Mark Sanchez. Neither was particularly sharp and no one was head over heels above the other. They both went 3-for-7 in 11-on-11s and each had potential interceptions dropped.

Clemens was nearly picked off twice, once when he was looking for TE Dustin Keller and over the middle and the other coming when he was trying to hit WR Jerricho Cotchery. LB Bart Scott almost came up with the interception and you know he'd probably still be talking about it if he did.

jets1.jpg

Sanchez, meanwhile, just flat out missed some of his intended targets and held onto the ball way too long again, resulting in at least one would-be sack. He badly overthrew Keller on a sideline route in 11-on-11s. One of his best throws came in the 7-on-7s when he hit TE Kareem Brown in traffic in the seam. But the rookie, who did complete two of his final three attempts and might have nailed all three if WR Wallace Wright ran through a sideline route rather than laying out for the ball, continues to be a work in progress.

"Both quarterbacks had their moments," Ryan said, "both good and bad."

■ Expect to see some Wildcat in this year's offense. The Jets used several variations of the Wildcat these last two days, with Leon Washington and Brad Smith taking the direct snaps. Washington got most of the Wildcat workload today, although Smith was mixed in a bit. Washington, though, probably has to work on his throws a bit more after getting picked off by S Eric Smith in yesterday's evening practice.

■ Speaking of Smith, Ryan hurled a lot of praise his way. We mentioned in yesterday's report that Smith collected three INTs and that didn't go unnoticed in the eyes of the coaching staff.

"He's really taken off for us," Ryan said. "He's really improving. Here's a veteran player that came in -- I don't know if he was a little disgruntled with where he was on the depth chart and all that kind of stuff, but he just keeps getting better."

■ New/old punter Reggie Hodges was present and accounted for. Hodges wasn't very consistent in his punting days with the Jets last season as many of you know, so Ryan was asked why Wilbur was let go and why Hodges is back.

Speaking of Wilbur, Ryan said: "We had some issues with his hands and his consistency and that's not a good thing."

■ It's that time again. Here's the next episode of the Rex Ryan Comedy Hour.

In response to a query about his decision to move training camp away from The Hangar and up to Cortland, Ryan started joking about the number of people who aren't all that fond of him at the moment.

"I know I was the Most Wanted guy in New Jersey," Ryan cracked. "I don't know what's up with that. I'm the Most Wanted in Miami now, Most Wanted in New England," Ryan cracked. "I never even brought the Miami dude up. I'm just happy they never said I was that big left tackle they got. Then I might be nervous. I don't know, I'm in trouble it sounds like."

■ There's another practice at 4 p.m., so I'll be back with updates and include them right here in this same report.

blog_header_cimini.jpg Rex & Channing's war of words continues

June 10, 2009

The verbal ping-pong match between Rex Ryan and Dolphins LB Channing Crowder continued today, adding more fuel to the Jets-Dolphins rivalry. Imagine this: Trash talking in June. Between a coach and an opposing player. It doesn't get better than that.

Crowder, speaking to the Miami Herald, fired back yesterday at Ryan, who earlier in the day pretended he never heard of Crowder - but took a few shots at him anyway.

''Oh, Lord have mercy,'' Crowder said. "What's wrong with him? Now he's talking about preparation? We play them twice this year. If he wants to be prepared, shouldn't he know the starting middle linebackers of his division rival?''

Crowder scoffed at Ryan's comment about how he'd "handle him" if he was younger.

''He says he'd take care of me if he was younger?'' Crowder said. "I'd have beat the hell out of that big old joker. Or if he really wants to get retro, my daddy or my uncle could have handled him. Don't get big. Win with preparation? Start watching some tape and learn who your rival is. Come on now.''

Not to be out trash-talked, Ryan walked into his news conference today at minicamp and immediately launched into his Crowder rebuttal.

"Let's see if he can top this one," Ryan said. "I've walked over tougher guys going to a fight." Later, he added, "He can send himself and his father after me."

Up in Foxborough, Bill (Rings) Belichick was asked about Ryan's recent remarks. If you recall, Ryan said he isn't intimidated by Belichick or the Patriots and isn't planning to "kiss Belichick's rings."

Belichick's response? Let's just say it was a lot less colorful than Crowder.

"I have a lot of respect for Rex, what he did in Baltimore, the defense his team has played," Belichick said today. "We've always had great battles with the Jets, so I'm sure that will continue. It's a great rivalry. They beat us up here last year. They kind of got the last punch in on that one, so we'll have to ... It's a new year. Right now, we are more focused on Buffalo than any other team in the division because we open with them, but we know we're going to have to deal with Miami and the Jets as well, and we have a lot of respect for all those teams."

My peeps familiar with Belichick's thinking say he will absolutely use Ryan's quotes as bulletin-board fodder during the season.

***

Let's talk some football.

It was a rough practice this morning for both quarterbacks, Kellen Clemens and Mark Sanchez. Here's a statistical breakdown:

11 on 11 drills:

Clemens: 4-for-7 (overthrew TE Dustin Keller on a deep seam; almost picked off by LB Bart Scott).

Sanchez: 3-for-7 (overthrew WR Brad Smith on a sideline pass; handled the blitz nicely to find WR David Clowney for an estimated 15-yard gain).

7 on 7 drills:

Clemens: 3-for-5 (Found Keller for 25 yards).

Sanchez: 4-for-6 (Overthrew his new favorite target, Wallace Wright).

"They both had their moments today - good and bad," Ryan said of the two QBs.

***

The Jets spent an inordinate amount of time working on the "Wildcat" formation. Makes sense. With versatile athletes like Leon Washington and Smith, it pays to have some gadget plays. O.C. Brian Schottenheimer has used both players in the past, allowing them to take direct snaps in shotgun, but this morning they devoted an entire period to the Wildcat.

Ryan couldn't resist a tweak at the Dolphins, the team that popularized the Wildcat last season. He reminded everyone that the Dolphins had "no success" last season with their Wildcat against Ryan's Baltimore defense. Indeed, the Ravens beat up the Dolphins twice, including a rout in the playoffs. (I bet Channing Crowder will have something to say about that.)

Explaining his own use of the Wildcat, Ryan said it will help on two fronts: It'll allow them to maximize the athleticism of Washington and Smith and it will help the defense to prepare for the formation. The Dolphins figure to use it more this season after drafting former West Virginia QB Pat White, a serious running threat.

***

Ryan praised backup S Eric Smith, who made three interceptions yesterday.

"He's really taking off on us," Ryan said.

***

Explaining the decision to cut and sign a punter, Ryan said Eric Wilbur - cut after Tuesday's practice - was suffering from a hands issue. In other words, he was mishandling too many snaps.

Knowing special teams coach Mike Westhoff, this whole punter thing has to be driving him bananas.

***

TE Kareem Brown had a terrific practice. In a one-on-one drill, he blew past S Jim Leonhard with a great fake. Afterward, Ryan said of his former defensive lineman-turned-tight end, "He really did have a big day."

***

An estimated crowd of 1,500 showed up for the morning's open practice - roughly the equivalent of a pre-Favre turnout at training camp.

'Wildcat' formation dominates morning practice for New York Jets

by Dave Hutchinson/The Star-Ledger Wednesday June 10, 2009, 2:45 PM

large_brad-smith-new-york-jets-610.jpgWilliam Perlman/The Star-LedgerJets wide receiver Brad Smith got some reps at the team's minicamp out of the "Wildcat" formation, which keys on versatile offensive players like the former college quarterback.

The star of Wednesday's morning practice was the "Wildcat" formation, which was introduced to the NFL last season by the Miami Dolphins and caused quite a stir around the league. The alignment involves a direct snap to the running back, who then has the option to run the ball himself, pass it, or hand it off to another running back.

The Jets spent much of the morning practice working on the formation with Leon Washington and Brad Smith taking snaps, and it was fitting considering the verbal sparring currently going on between Jets coach Rex Ryan and Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder.

"Since our entire focus is on Miami right now, we were ready for Crowder playing running back," cracked Ryan before getting serious.

"Those are things we're going to look at. I think that took the league by storm, a few opponents anyway," he said. "I do know they had no success last year where I was at. We (the Ravens) were 2-0 against them. (Baltimore beat Miami, 27-13, in Week 7, and 27-9 in the wild card round of the playoffs).

"If you have those kind of athletes. ... You have a Leon Washington and you have a Brad Smith, I think that's going to be a great thing."

Ryan also pointed out that it provides an opportunity for the defense to get a look at it because he feels the Dolphins may use the scheme again next season. ...

Notes: Ryan couldn't resist taking another shot at Crowder, who responded to Ryan's comment on Tuesday that he could've handled Crowder when he was younger. Crowder said "he'd have beat the hell out of that big old joker.''

Ryan, clearly enjoying the exchange, joked, "Let's see if he can top this one. I've walked over tougher guys going to a fight. ... Man, this dude is going to kill me. But we'll make that trade if they're going to throw us both out (of the game)." ...

Ryan doubled over his audience in laughter later when he was asked about moving training camp to upstate New York. He joked that he's on the most-wanted list in New Jersey, New England (because of his remarks about Bill Belichick) and Miami. ...

Backup S Eric Smith, who had three interceptions on Tuesday, has caught the eye of Ryan.

"He has really taken off for us," said Ryan. "He's really improving. He's a veteran guy who came in and I don't know if he was disgruntled with where he was initially on the depth charts. He just keeps getting better." ...

QBs Kellen Clemens and Mark Sanchez were so-so in the morning session. Each completed three of six passes with a sack. "Both quarterbacks had their moments, good and bad," said Ryan. ...

Ryan said receivers coach Henry Ellard is doing a great job. He pointed out how Ellard was one of the great route runners in NFL history and is imparting that knowledge to his players. He also explained how Ellard is teaching the receivers tricks of the trade, such of faking out an opposing defensive back by looking back for the ball when it's not coming and then putting another move on him to get free. ...

Although Kris Jenkins (6-foot-4, 360 pounds) has been playing a lot of defensive end this offseason, Ryan said he'll likely spend much of his time inside next season. ... Roughly 1,000 fans attended the morning workout. In addition to Wednesday's afternoon workout, fans will be able to attend Thursday's morning practice, the final one of the minicamp.

I just got back and let me say one thing, the facility is awesome and the players were great. Players who came and signed autographs:

Thomas Jones

Leon Washington

Alan Faneca

Damien Woody

Brandon Moore

Jerricho Cotchery

Chansi Stuckey

Kris Jenkins

Kerry Rhodes

Calvin Pace

Bart Scott -- WHO SIGNED FOR ALMOST EVERYBODY after the 2nd practice

All the Tight Ends

I was there for both practices, like the article says before, the Wildcat was used a lot in the 1st practice and in the 2nd practice both Sanchez and Clemens were able to get the team in FG position after starting 1st & 10 at their own 32 with 1 T.O. and 1:10 on the clock. However, Sanchez got the Jets to the 33 and Clemens got them to the 15. Sanchez was also intercepted on his first attempt of the drive down the field.

And Thomas Jones signed my Jones jersey, woohoo. :)

Oh and JCo dropped 1 punt and 3 passes today. Not a good day for Jco, but he did end it well with Sanchez's second 1:10 drive catching I believe 3 passes on that drive.

Meh, I dunno. Sanchez isn't exactly lighting it up.

If the kid isn't ready, then he isn't ready. Simple as that.

The only way Sanchez wasn't going to start the season was if he held out of training camp. With his contract signed, he's a virtual lock for opening day.

Again you're probably right andI hope he does start but if he's really struggling and I'm talking Vernon Gholston type struggling you have to sit him. Can't play the guy for the sake of it IMO, he needs to show something.

can we get an NFL - caliber punter for crying out loud ?

having a good punter/holder is important, and the jets seem to have a parade or losers

When Hodges came out a few fans started yelling "REGGIE!" including me. :rl:

Then all the players started yelling to him, happy to see him.

They seem to like him.

Nice that you got TJ to sign your jersey.

I was there for the 2nd practice too but I was just standing back watching everyone trying to get an autograph. The crowd looked like a swarm of ants after the same piece of food.

How'd they look in the 2nd practice?

Any word on Gholston? Is he looking comfortable?

Not only that but because I was wearing his jersey he signed my ball too and I got to chat with him at the end of the fence for a nice 15, 20 seconds telling him the Jets need to show him the money and we expect another big year out of him.

Wearing my Keller today... going to try to 2 for 2 with jersey signings.

Don't tell him that ****. There is no reason for that. Don't go putting ideas in his head. You should have told him to show them what he is made of so he can get paid next year.
