Patriots play dirty with threat to NT Vince Wilfork

Ron Borges of the Boston Herald reports Vince Wilfork learned this week how the Patriots roll when it comes to player negotiations. It's the same way he rolls at nose tackle - low, hard and sometimes dirty.

Next time Patriots management talks about not wanting to negotiate in the media, Wilfork and his teammates should remember what just happened to him. Anyone who doesn't know who leaked the threat of the team going after $500,000 of bonus money if Wilfork doesn't report to a mandatory minicamp today has their hands over their eyes.

The clause in the collective bargaining agreement the Pats threatened to invoke is no longer in effect. It was judged so onerous it was changed in 2006 when the CBA was last extended. But because Wilfork signed his six-year deal in 2004 he is not protected from the wording in effect at that time, which said the portion of a signing bonus attributable to a player's remaining years is at risk if he refuses to perform.

I'm guessing if they play that card, he's done in NE. Even if they get him to report, he doesn't seem the type of guy to play his heart out if he's pissed at his own coach. Man would I love to see him in...say....Seattle or Arizona.

He doesnt sound pixxed in todays article.

He loves NE, Patriots, Football but abhors the business aspect of things.

Wilfork doesn't have to be mad.

He's going to make a TON of money as an UFA. With all the "old" 3-4 teams and the new ones cropping up each year, he will be in high demand at the start of the next FA period.

He'll easily get top 3 of the FA contracts next year (that is, one of the top 3 contract deals for that offseason, not necessarily of all time).

Wilfork has nothing to worry about. It's simply the idea of, "Let me get my millions now so I can chill, or I'll just wait to get even more millions later."

Ron Borges bashing the Patriots? Shocker.

Did he plagiarize this news as well?

The Patriots typically dont negotiate with players under contract who hold out.

Wilfork is doing the right thing by honoring the last year of his contract and attending camp.

As he should. Fulfill the contract that YOU SIGNED, and move on. I am obviously not a Pats fan, but they are correct here.

I've heard this argument before. So when a player outperforms their contracts by say two fold, they should just shut up and play their contract till the end?

What about players who completely under-perform? ie. Bryan Thomas, Dewayne Robertson.

I understand there's a medium somewhere. But someone like Boldin needs to shut up because hes still got 3 years left on his contract I think and he's just being a diva. Leon has 1 year left and deserves to get paid now even though hes got 1 year left. Wilfork I think is in the same category as Leon, hes outperformed his rookie contract year in year out, he deserves to be paid now not only because of his performance, but also because he's never acted like a diva before and never said anything bad against the Patriots.

Yes.

The player has to choose. Take less money and a shorter contract and become a FA again. Or take more money and be tied to a contract you could out perform. Of course, a rookie has limits his contract can be.

Deoin Branch had a similar situation. His yearly average he received from the Seahawks is virtually the same he would have received from the Patriots (~6 million). He would have been a FA this off season if he was a Patriot, but he took the potential toi earn more on a longer deal. We will see if his injury prone luck continues and he sees all 6 years.

It was obvious in the news clips I saw of Wilfork and the Pats yesterday that he was spoken to about how to present himself to the media.

He used the same buzz words that Retard Tongue Kraft used when he was speaking to the media. They told him to behave and they'll think about it. Act like an asshat and he'll get nothing.

Fine, just play this season and he can go on his way if its all about money. VW wont be the first player to leave NE for greener pastures and I doubt he would be the last.

The Patriots have a salary cap structure that they adhere to and I'm fairly certain Wilfork wont get the amount of money he wants.

He's due to be a FA after this season. He's turning to the Pats now and asking them to sign him long term for what he is worth, or else he will hit the open market and get paid top dollar. If the Pats are smart they sign him now at a discount of what he will command on the open market. There are teams that would be SALIVATING at the opportunity to sign Wilfork, and quite frankly Wilfork can not be replaced by NE if they lose him.

Relatively speaking.

I think the answer is already there. The Patriots have two key free agents after this year....Mankins and Wilfork. The Patriots used a high pick on one of their positions....Brace at NT.

IMHO Wilfork plays out this season. Brace gets a year of development as a back-up.

Mankins is franchised if a contract cannot be worked out.

Wilfork walks. Unless Mankins is signed early enough which allows the Patriots to franchsie Wilfork to squeeze some picks and/or players in a trade.

1. Ol' Plagerizing Ron will never give up the hatin' will he? What a doosh.

2. So the Pats are "threatening" to use a rule that APPLIES to Wilfork? How is this "dirty"?

3. Wilfork is in camp saying all the right things.

Non story.

I'm sure Brace is a nice little player - but he's no Wilfork and he never will be. This 3-4 HAS to have a formidable Nose for it to work. Remember pre-Ted Washington? Remember during Ted Washington? Exactly. My best guess is that Wilfork gets signed to a new deal after the season, and Semour gets released.

Do I detect a little BC hate there?

I agree with your points. Of the three, I hope Wilfork and Mankins stay, but will believe that when I see it.

I think they will get a deal done, but Brady or somebody will have to restructure.

Seymour and A Thomas make way too much IMO. Why they ever paid Thomas so much is a mystery to me.:confused0058:

Thomas is good for another year before his contract gets too ridulous (9.4 million). I cannot see him staying at that price.
